Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Overview

The Nikon F mount Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens was developed primarily for film and video applications. The cine version of Rokinon's 35mm lens features industry-standard gearing for the focus and aperture ring, and the aperture ring has been de-clicked for smooth iris pulls. The aperture and focus scales have also been relocated to the side of the lens, where it is easier for focus pullers to read them.

This lens is compatible with FX (full-frame) sensors and can also be used on DX-sized sensors, where the 35mm-equivalent focal length will be 52.5mm. The optical construction incorporates two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion to produce sharper imagery. Additionally, a UMC coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich images.

Wide-angle prime lens is well-suited to use in a broad variety of shooting situations.
Fast T1.5 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
Geared aperture and focus rings are compatible with standard follow focuses for greater control over adjustment.
De-clicked aperture ring facilitates smooth, quiet exposure adjustments during recording.

question

If I slap this lens on my dx sensor, will I get a 1.5x crop factor?
Asked by: Anonymous
The quick answer is yes. In the future, do know it is the sensor, not the lens, that determines crop factor. In calculating crop factor, what you are doing is comparing one sensor's FOV (Field Of View) to the FOV of another, different size, sensor. In the end, just learn that on a DX/APS-C sensor a 35mm lens like this one will is in the range of normal perspective and just extrapolate what wide and tele mm's are for that sensor. Then drop calculating crop factor for a sensor you are not shooting with. Save your mental energy for creativity.

question

How does this lens compare to the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens?
Asked by: Evan B.
The optics themselves between the two lenses are essentially the same. However, the DS version has upgrades that are appreciated when working long hours on set. DS stands for Dual Scale meaning the focus scale can be read by a focus assistant on either side of the camera. The AS version is visible only on top. The focus and aperture gear positions match the positions on the other DS lenses which allows for faster lens changes with less fiddling of follow focus/aperture wheels or motors. Finally, the DS lenses are better color matched than the AS lenses which means much less time color grading in post production. These differences, if important to the filmmaker, are worth the extra money.

question

if i use this lens with adapter on sony a6500, what equivalent has? (stay 35mm or 70mm because of the crop factor?)
Asked by: GEORGE V.
The first factor in Field of View equivalency determination is sensor size. Since the Sony a6500 has an APS-C sensor, it is a 1.6 crop of a Full Frame sensor. With this 35mm Rokinion, the FOV on the Sony a6500 will approximate a 50mm lens on a Full Frame camera.
