Peerless-AV PTM400S Reviews
Disappointing and frustrating to install
I normally buy Maclocks brand stands for iPads and other tablets, but I ended up purchasing this Peerless universal tablet mount primarily because B&H didn't show any available security mounts for a new 10.9 Apple iPad Air I purchased at the same time. Since our tablets are normally installed in public, high-traffic areas with a lot of different employees using them, I always like to have a security mount so that tablets don't grow legs and walk away. This was the only option at the time, but I wish now that I would have just ordered a different stand elsewhere. The base of the stand is heavy and very sturdy, however that's about all of the pros to this stand. The cons are numerous. Starting with the lack of any included instructions and not much care put into packaging, I had to visit Peerless's website to download an installation manual. No big deal - but a little frustrating. The adjustable clamps themselves are a pain to install. It would have been much better to already have a rail system where the adjustable clamps can easily be slid and re-tightened. The most frustrating part was to actually clamp in the iPad though. The instructions suggested to lay the tablet face-down on a non-scratch surface and then put the mount behind the tablet and adjust the clamps around it. If it had an adjustable rail system or a nice way to quickly tighten and loosen the clamps, that would have been fine. The problem though is that it's almost impossible to get the tablet mounted in nice and straight. The bottom clamp is only secured with one screw, and the others aren't locked into a straight rail system, so they can get awfully skewed when trying to position the clamps around the tablet to then have to tighten with a phillips head screwdriver. There are seven (7) screws in total with metal washers that need to be tightened all while holding the heavy base hovering above the tablet and of course trying to keep the clamps straight. I ended up pre-tightening the top clamp as far out as it would go as the top clamp has two screws so I could make sure at least the top was level. This could have not worked for some tablets though because the charging port is almost covered by the side arms. The other very disappointing thing is the security hardware. This consists of two plastic pieces that cover the seven phillips head screws in the back of the mount with four security hex screws. One of the plastic covers also cracked when I was tightening one of these security screws. I had hoped the tablet's security hardware was more like my other Maclocks stands where I have a key to unlock the mount to easily remove or replace the tablet if needed. With this mount, I have to remove 4 hex screws and at least loosen a few other phillips head screws to even remove the tablet. All-in-all, this was a purchase of necessity that I wish I would have decided against.
Solid Quality Mount
This mount is very well built and easy to assemble. Adjusts easily to fit the tablet. Easy to secure to a counter top to prevent theft.
