Alesis iO Mix overview

  • 1Description

The iO Mix from Alesis turns an iPad into a portable studio capable of recording multiple microphones or instruments directly into GarageBand or any other compatible Core Audio app. All the basic connections are provided, including 30-pin Dock and Lightning connectors, four combo XLR-1/4" input jacks, and balanced stereo 1/4" outputs. A 1/4" headphone output is also available.

There are no dongle connections or USB cables needed since the iPad integrates seamlessly within the familiar mixing console setup, and is completely enclosed and secure. Further, it allows for connecting virtually any piece of recording gear to an iPad – microphones, instruments, speakers, headphones, and more.

Each input channel features trim, channel gain, pan, and low and high EQ controls, located on the front of the unit. High-pass filters are available on each channel to eliminate low-frequency interference in live mixing and recording situations. Switchable 48V phantom power enables condenser microphones, while a guitar-direct switch makes guitar recording easy. A switchable limiter delivers clip-free recordings.

With the iPad in place, the combo is the perfect portable studio. Not only that, access to other audio or multimedia apps is always available, while wireless audio playback is possible using Bluetooth-enabled speakers.

    Alesis iO Mix reviews

iO Mix - 4 Channel Recorder for iPad is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value works well with auria le. has problems with garage band. great when you need 4 live tracks to work with later but also want a 2 track live mix. the $20 for the auria le app is the perfect addition to this unit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap No issues with sound quality but the physical materials used for construction is sub par. The door on the right that holds the iPad in place is flimsy and destined to break. If the door breaks, the iPad will be at risk of falling out. I guess this unit was worth what I paid, but I wish I would have saved my money and spent more for something more substantial.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Alesis iO Mix - 4 Channel Recorder Delivers. The Alesis iO Mix - 4 Channel Recorder for iPad turns my iPad2 running IOS 9.3.5 into a compact 4 tracks recorder. Although many online videos show the unit being used with the Garage Band app there is not a version of Garage Band compatible with my iPad available at the iTunes store. I purchased Music Studio 2.9 by Alexander Gross from the iTunes Store for $14.99. Installing the iPad into the recorder was easy. The iO Mix manual is mostly a quick reference showing connection examples and diagrams showing brief descriptions of the recorder controls, indicators and input/output jacks. After familiarizing with these features I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the features as well as the sound clarity of the recording. The unit being Core Audio compatible allows simultaneous recording of 4 tracks to the Music Studio software. Features like the eq, limiter, high-pass filter and phantom power are built into this unit. As other reviewers have mentioned the ability of the unit to keep the iPad charged while recording is a plus. This unit mainly supports audio recording and does not have MIDI input or output. This is a good choice for a capable compact audio iPad recorder.
