Mola Rayo overview

  • 1Description

The 16" Rayo Reflector (Silver) by Mola has a completely different design than other Mola reflectors. It's designed to be used alone as a main light or with other Mola reflectors as a fill or hairlight. The smaller diameter and greater depth gives it a harder beam of light, sharp shadows and a narrower, longer throw of light which can be altered using optional Opal and PAD internal deflectors or a grid.

Optional Adapters
Available for a wide variety of strobe and HMI lights, including Alien Bee/Einstein, Bowens, Bron, Dynalite, Elinchrom, Elinchrom Quadra, Hensel, Lumedyne, Speedotron, Profoto, Profoto-ProDaylight, ProTungsten and K5600.

    Mola Rayo reviews

16" Rayo Reflector (Silver) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Contrasty Light Without Being Too Harsh I recently acquired the Rayo to mate up with my Profoto B1 strobes for shoots where I wanted more of an edgy look to my key light. It did not disappoint. As other reviewers have noted, the Rayo provides a punchy light with strong contrasts, but has just the right amount of softness to avoid being harsh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just get it already Purchased through a local seller a few years ago, still haven't seen much traction on this dish. I made my purchase blindly, but you don't have to. It's a strong contrast light with a 60 degree fall off. There's a new one they're releasing that's 50 degrees and a smaller mouth. Interesting thing about this reflector is how much pop a photo has, yet there's a pleasing softness to it thanks to the metal mesh in the dish. There's some talk on how this is like a profoto magnum. Kind of. It's more Telezoom and Magnum had a lovechild. Long throw with an extra stop of light. I have to crank my acuteb pack down to use it. Every time you pop one off, *DUNK....DUNK....DUNK* It's weird but satisfying. There's a video floating around by The Breed of this thing in action against a beauty dish. Had much better transitions and fall off. It's a satisfying pop that isn't too strong. Single light setup for this. If you have lower power packs, it's worth the extra light you get. Had it on an AB800, best photos were shot on this thing. It's a tall dish though. The carrying bag is pricy. Not exactly easy to travel with. Use with an boom to make your life easier. What I am saying is, it's not a hard light you'd expect Mola to make, but it's got a hard-soft quality. Worthwhile purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and hard So a longer and narrow hard beam than you would get from a Magnum profoto reflector. Pretty Heavy. With a monoblock like the B1 it gets pretty crazy on a stand. It also performs better I think with the standard heads with globes. If your using the B1 or D1 D2 exclusively you should probably get the glass accessory globe for those units. Have not tried the Rayo with the usual Mola glass diffusion kit. Will update when I do that. And yes could use a case. I keep it in the box it was shipped in at the moment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The amazing Rayo W O W If you think of getting this but are afraid to buy it because there aren't any reviews out there, don't hesitate. This is one amazing light modifier. It has more punch than the mola beauty dishes, but yet a unique softness to it, combined with sharp light falloff. Very unique as either a main or fill light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Modifier Mola stuff is very solid. A level above most metal modifiers on tensil strength. This one is close to needing the extra support of the brace that the Setti has. When you put a monoblock on it it is pretty heavy. Really needs a case to keep it nice if your going to travel with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Besides the Mola Setti this is my favorite modifier. I love how crisp the shadows are when shooting beauty with the Rayo, its simply amazing. I only wish I had bought it sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite modifier Mola, where have you been all my life? My soft boxes have taken a backseat to the Rayo, the Demi and the Setti. And I must admit, I love the thunking sound it makes :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable Results Soft clean consistent light. Highly recommended for that extra throw or that up-close softness.
