Samyang 8mm f/3.5 HD Fisheye Reviews

Maximizing 360° Panorama Precision with the Samyang 8mm f/3.5 AE

I have developed a strong appreciation for the Samyang (Rokinon) 8mm f/3.5 HD Fisheye Lens equipped with an AE chip. What stands out to me is how the AE chip enhances the lens’s performance by minimizing potential errors during the stitching process of 360° panoramas in PTGui. This feature proves particularly beneficial when I opt to shoot in RAW format, where precision becomes critical. Initially, I paired this lens with a Nikon D800E, but my experience with it was somewhat marred by the unwelcome appearance of prominent black borders in my images. Over time, this prompted me to shift away from using it with that camera body. Nonetheless, I have to emphasize that one of this lens's standout qualities lies in its remarkable efficiency for panoramic photography. It’s quite impressive that I can achieve a complete 360° panorama with just three shooting angles, a feat that the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 cannot match, as it typically necessitates four angles to deliver similar results. Transitioning to my Nikon D300 has been a game changer for me. The lens truly shines in panoramic work; capturing a full 360° panorama becomes extraordinarily manageable, requiring only eight shooting angles. When it comes to sharpness and image clarity, the results are nothing short of exceptional. In fact, this lens holds its ground remarkably well, standing tall against the Tokina 10–17mm and even surpassing several others in its category. What I particularly adore about this lens is its ability to bring the world closer in a visually dramatic manner. The exaggerated perspectives it creates lend an artistic flair to my photography, allowing the viewer to experience a space in ways that everyday images cannot achieve. The combination of depth and distortion creates an engaging narrative, inviting viewers to explore the captured scene from multiple angles and dimensions. In my opinion, it excels not just in technical terms — like sharpness and low distortion — but also in artistic expression. Its unique characteristics make it a valuable tool for any photographer looking to infuse creativity into their work. I'm continually amazed by how this lens fosters experimentation and exploration in my photography journey. With every click, I find myself discovering new ways to interpret spaces, making it an essential piece of my gear.

This lens can work with the Nikon FTZ adapter, but since it is for a DX sensor, your resolution will be reduced and you will have cropping in the image.

question

According the picture, there is a chip included (contacts visible on the picture) at least for the Nikon version, so you should be able to set aperture on the camera and AF system will show, if focus is set properly.COULD YOU PLEASE CONFIRM THIS!

I have this lens on a D810. It is manual focus, but it has a enormous depth of field. Unless you are making super large prints, you may find that close is good enough. To get critical focus on the D810 I use live view and zoom in on the image. Yes, this one with the chip will activate the focus confirmation function, if you want to use that. Also, the chip allows the camera to set aperture on the lens using the AE programs. In other words, the A, M, S, and P modes work.

question

will this create full circular images?
Asked by: Crystal
On a DX (crop frame) sensor this lens will fill the full frame with 180 degree view diagonally. On a full frame sensor it depends if the hood is attached. If the hood is not attached, then there is a rounded image on the left and right sides, but the top and bottom are limited by the sensor. If the hood is attached, then the left and right sides are cropped by the hood so you get a sort of rectangular shape.

question

is this a lens that will work on my d610? thank you

Yes it's compatible, but it will have significant vignetting on a full frame camera. No vignetting on the Nikon DX. I use it on a Nikon D7200 and love it.

question

What is the difference between focus confirm chip and AE chip on the Samyang 8mm Fisheye Lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
The AE chip on this particular lens allows the user to maintain all the controls and features related to the exposure parameters in the Nikon camera they are using. That would include exposure modes such as Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Manual. Additionally, i-TTL flash control and EXIF data are among the other features that are retained. As for the AF confirmation chip, that would simply confirm focus in the viewfinder when manual focusing on the camera. A green dot next to the metering graph would be an indication that the image is in focus.
