Vello EXT-CEM overview

  • 1Description

The Vello Manual Extensions Tube Set for Canon EF/EF-S-Mount allows your lens to focus closer than its normal minimum focusing distance. By placing distance between your camera body and lens, the focusing distance is shortened and magnification is increased. Extension tubes enable macro performance for lenses not otherwise able to focus that close, and are also suited for close-up portraiture. The Manual Extension Tube Set for Canon EF/EF-S-mount contains three extension tubes of 7mm, 14mm, and 28mm lengths. They pair up with the required camera and lens adapter mounts, which add an additional 15mm to the actual extension tube lengths. The extension tubes can be used individually or together in seven distinct combinations to create the desired magnification. For closer focusing use the larger extension tube or stack the tubes together. Extension tubes have no optical elements so do not degrade the quality of your lenses.

These tubes are manual tubes and do not communicate electronic functions, such as autofocus or auto exposure control, between your camera body and mounted lens; both manual focusing and manual exposure control must be used. Since Canon EF/EF-S lenses do not feature a built-in aperture ring, exposure can only be controlled by changing the camera's shutter speed, while maintaining the native preset aperture of the lens. With Canon EF/EF-S lenses, this will be the largest f/stop. Due to the screw-in design of the manual extension tubes, the lens may not sit directly upright but will, however, function normally. Do not to over-tighten screw-in tubes to ensure easy removal of each tube. Additionally, when using the extension tubes, you will lose the ability to focus to infinity.

Shortens minimum focusing distance of lens for macro photography.
Extension tubes of 7mm, 14mm, and 28mm lengths can be used individually or in any combination of the three for greater magnification. The required camera and lens adapter mounts add an additional 15mm to the actual extension tube lengths.
Lightweight design with metal mounts for durability and longevity.
Fits Canon EOS DSLR cameras and all EF/EF-S-mount lenses.

Manual Extension Tube Set for Canon EF/EF-S-Mount is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth the money It does exactly what it should and, for $, that's great. It allows me to turn an 18-55 kit lens into a closeup without adding any glass between the lens and sensor. The only downside is the construction. Attaching it to the lens is a little hit and miss and it definitely does not lock into place securely. But, with a little practicing you can get it snug. It also doesn't maintain a connection with the lens so the aperture reads F00 the whole time. But that's a compromise for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like it should These are inexpensive keep that in mind, that being said they work as expected. I use this with the Canon DSLR and an old film Minolta 50mm lense, reversed. Great for macro, there is a trick to releasing the lense, the little knob must be moved over and then pulled back slightly, practice to get the feel before putting lense on and you can see how it works. 5 stars because it is an outstanding value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low price macro device A cheap way to do macro photo. You can use each ring separately or combined to get extended possibilities.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from False advertising! I purchased this set because of the 7mm tube. Most other sets start at 12mm, and I need a shorter tube than that. Unfortunately, it's not really a 7mm extension tube. It's a 7mm piece plus a camera mount plus a lens mount, making it a 22mm tube. Use only the camera and lens mounts without the 7mm tube, and you've got a 15mm extension tube. If you need a short extension tube, buy a 12/20/36mm set, and you'll get exactly that. This 7/14/28mm set is a rip off. Zero stars!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for experimenting with I needed to be able to shoot footage through the lens of a microscope for a film I am making. I started with these tubes thinking maybe paired with my 50mm prime I would be able to shoot without using the microscope and still get reasonable detail. The detail is good, the depth of field is awesome, most of the shots I got are very dreamy and defocused with the exception of my subject, and I can get very close to the subject. But, I just wasn't getting that microscopic view I wanted. After experimenting, I discovered that due to the extremely shallow DOF, I could put the cam on a tripod, and literally touch the lens filter of the 50 prime to the eyepiece of the microscope (had to remove the rubber part of the eyepiece, and also put a bit of paper in between to prevent scratches), and get a 90% view of the subject under microscope! Having the defocused, rounded edges of the microscope lens show up in my frame was also really cool, it's going to work terrifically for what I want to use it for. Full metal construction, built tough. For the price, it's worth just picking these up to experiment with. Very pleased. The only problem I have, is that the ring that fits up to the camera is just a little bit loose once it's secured to the camera body. As long as you're on a tripod (which is a must if you're shooting macro photography anyway), and you get set up and use a remote to shutter, you'll do just fine. I even did some handheld shots and didn't have any trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an amazing microinvestment I use this product to take macro shots of jewelry. My 50mm f1.4 prime on my Canon Rebel t3i instantly turned into a macro lens and produced amazing images. Saves $500 on a good macro lens, and costs nothing. Be prepared to focus manually.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use As it says in the title it's all manual. Only downside is it can be a bit time consuming to get the tubes to mount onto the camera body, works well and produces some great macro results!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from About What You'd Expect For The Price I saw this in the B&H catalog and I thought it would be a handy item for close up copy work utilizing my camera lens. As advertised, it fit my Canon EF lens perfectly and does what I wanted it for. One needs to be careful threading the parts together so as not to strip or cross thread the fine threads. Do not overtighten. A filter wrench might be a good thing to have on hand should you become overzealous.
