FUJIFILM X-E1 overview

  • 1Description

The X-E1 Digital Camera with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens Kit (Black) from Fujifilm is the latest Fujifilm mirrorless camera and comes bundled with Fuji's first X-mount zoom lens. With a classic design, magnesium alloy build and completely state-of-the-art digital technology, the XE-1 will soon be a favorite among all levels of photographers.

The sensor on the X-E1 is Fujiflm's 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor and the image processor is the EXR Processor Pro. The DSLR-sized X-Trans utilizes a unique color filter pixel array that eliminates a low pass filter and reduces moiré and false colors, resulting in exceptionally true-to-life color images, low noise and high resolution that other sensors with optical low-pass filters cannot approach. The EXR processor delivers high-performance, especially in terms of auto-focus speeds.

Fuji has created a unique lens mount for the X-series cameras. With a 10-pin data bus the lens instantly sends information to the camera body through the lens mount, meaning fewer adjustments to be made by the photographer and more time spent shooting. The reinforced mount is only 2.5mm thick, which contributes to the slim profile of the X-E1. The short flange and wide opening of the X-mount means that the lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor and will achieve high resolution even at the edges and corners of the sensor.

An incredibly high resolution 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder with a built-in diopter is provided for eye-level composition and a 2.8" 460K dot rear LCD monitor for composition and playback is available as well. The EVF has a double aspheric lens element that offers faithful reproduction of focus, exposure, white balance and film simulation effects and has a high contrast ratio of 1:5000. The LCD monitor has a special anti-reflective coating which reduces glare when viewing in bright sunlight and is water and stain resistant.

Thanks to improved contrast detection, the X-E1, coupled with an XF lens, can autofocus in as fast as 0.1 seconds and continuous high-speed shooting of up to 6 frames per second will allow you to capture fast-moving subjects whether they be newsworthy or simply to send to grandma. To guarantee that you never miss the action, QuickStart Mode provides a camera start-up time as short as 0.5 seconds.

Speaking of grandma, she will love the movies you can create with the X-E1's video capability. Shoot with Full HD 1080p and record in stereo sound for videos that can be screened on HDTV or right on the LCD monitor. A jack for an external microphone is also provided to record professional grade sound.

As always, image quality is at the heart of Fujifilm's mission and to that, the X-E1 provides both JPG and RAW file shooting with in-camera RAW processing, TTL 256 Zones exposure control and ISO capabilities that range from 100-25,600. And Fujifilm, respecting their own legacy, offers something no other digital camera maker does -- Film Simulation Modes. You can set your X-E1 to produce images that simulate the tone and color qualities of the great Fuji films, like Velvia or PROVIA. If for example, you want rich saturated colors, choose Velvia and if you want silky textures and beautiful skin tones, set your camera to ASTIA.

The classic design of the X-E1 is not just a matter of nostalgia. The manual aperture ring, the exposure and shutter speed dials and electronic viewfinder prioritize photography, provide for quick operation and return us to an era when the camera was king.

This X-E1 kit comes with an XF-18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens which is Fuji's first zoom lens made specifically for their X-series cameras. The 35mm equivalency of this lens is 27.4-83.8mm, which provides a great zoom range from true wide-angle to standard telephoto and will cover all your day-to-day shooting needs. The lens is fast with a maximum aperture range of f/2.8-4 and provides 4-step optical image stabilization to reduce the effect of camera shake. Three aspherical elements reduce aberrations and provide for true light transmission and sharp imaging across the entire sensor. The linear motor in the new XF 18-55mm lens coupled with the high-speed read out of the X-Trans CMOS sensor and EXR Processor bring with it a huge improvement in auto-focus speed and precision. Focus can be achieved in as little as 0.1 seconds!

16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS Sensor
Moire is tackled at its root cause by the revolutionary X-Trans CMOS sensor's color filter array. By enhancing aperiodicity (randomness) in the array arrangement, the color filter minimizes generation of both moire and false colors, eliminating the necessity for an optical low-pass filter in the lens and enabling X-Trans CMOS sensor to capture full "unfiltered" lens performance. The EXR Processor Pro is supported by an integrated co-processor for higher speed and higher precision image processing performance.
X Mount
Taking full advantage of the mirrorless design, the mount boasts a short 17.7 mm flange back distance, a wider opening, and deeper mounting of the lens, resulting in reduction of back focus distance to the minimum possible while achieving high resolution extending to the image edge areas. When a FUJINON XF lens is mounted, all lens information is instantly communicated to the body, integrating them into a seamless, responsive instrument.
2.36 Million Dot OLED Viewfinder
A 0.5" electronic viewfinder provides crystal clear high resolution eye-level composition with a built-in diopter. Users who wear glasses will not need to remove them thanks to a 23mm eye-point and a soft resin coating on the eyepiece. A built-in eye sensor detects the presence of an eye and automatically turns on the viewfinder and a 25° field of view allows for the entire view to be seen quickly and easily. Two glass elements and one double aspheric element offer a display comparable to that of an optical viewfinder with high contrast and faithful reproduction of focus, exposure and white balance.
2.8" 460K Dot LCD Monitor
Compose and playback your photos and videos on this LCD with special anti-reflective coating that reduces glare and is resistant to stains, smudges and water.
Full HD 1080p Video with Stereo Sound
Capture the action in Full HD movies (1920 x 1080). In addition to full AUTO exposure, you can also shoot with aperture priority AE. Taking full advantage of the bright XF lenses, you can also capture movies with a beautiful defocused background. Later with plug-and-play ease, you can connect directly to your TV with an HDMI cable and share your movies complete with stereo audio on the big screen.
Focal Plane Shutter
The X-E1 is designed with a focal plane shutter that sits immediately in front of the sensor and can provide the camera with extremely fast shutter speeds.
Film Simulation Modes
The X-E1 can simulate the color and tonal qualities of acclaimed films including the natural look of PROVIA, the vibrant tonality and saturated colors of Velvia and the silky soft look and beautiful skin tones of ASTIA. Film Simulation mode makes it simple to capture the expressive color quality of the rich legacy of Fujifilm photo film technology. There are 10 Film Simulation Modes: Provia, Velvia, ASTIA, PRO Neg Hi, PRO Neg. Std., Monochrome, Monochrome+Ye Filter, Monochrome+R Filter, Monochrome+G Filter and Sepia.
QuickStart Mode
QuickStart Mode will power-up your camera and have you ready to shoot in as little as 0.5 seconds. Never miss a shot because you were ready but your camera wasn't. When QuickStart mode is turned off, camera will start in approximately 1.0 second.
Auto Bracketing
Auto Bracketing is a way to make sure you get the correctly exposed shot by shooting three continuous shots at slightly different levels. You can set Auto Bracketing for: AE Bracketing (+-1/3EV, +-2/3EV, +1EV); Film Simulation Bracketing (Any three types of film simulation selectable); Dynamic Range Bracketing (100%, 200%, 400%) and ISO Sensitivity Bracketing (+-1/3EV, +-2/3EV, +1EV).
JPEG and RAW Capture
Shoot in JPG or RAW and enjoy in-camera processing of the RAW files. The built-in RAW data converter lets you view results in the field without first transferring the data to your computer. This easy-to-use feature not only takes into account exposure compensation, white balance and other in-camera image quality settings, but also lets you apply Film Simulation modes in the converter mode.
High Speed Contrast Autofocus
Thanks to the high speed X-Trans CMOS sensor and newly developed EXR Processor Pro, contrast detection has improved and the X-E1 can autofocus in as little as 0.1 seconds and continuous high-speed shooting of up to 6 frames per second will allow you to capture fast-moving subjects and never miss an action shot. Autofocus is TTL Contrast AF with an available AF assist illuminator. AF Frame selection offers Area Frame with 49 areas and Multi Frame with 5 frame types.
Built-in Flash and Hot Shoe
The X-E1 provides a built-in pop-up flash and a hot shoe mount and TTL (Through the Lens) Flash Sync. Sync speed for flash is 1/180th of a second or slower.

    FUJIFILM X-E1 reviews

X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 126.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost a Leica I have been using the Leica M system for many years but a deteriorating eye condition forced me to move to an autofocus system. I wanted something similar to Leica M and the Fuji x-e1 certainly came close. Having used the system now for two weeks I am impressed. Many of its features could have been included in the M8 or M9 but are absent. The prime lenses for this camera are excellent; the zoom lens is acceptable. Others have noted that the color rendition didn't pop; I found it to be faithful and natural. For those wanting a camera that can easily be set to behave like a manual camera (like a Leica), this camera is a good choice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great, but I returned it. Here's why... The X-E1 is a great camera. It took very nice photos, just not as sharp as I expected given all the amazing IQ reviews (it's also very slow, slower than you'd expect). Obviously the retro look is beautiful and operating the camera is pretty easy, it just did not have the IQ I was looking for, perhaps I should've gotten the 35mm F/1.4 lens instead. If you're on the fence about what lens to get don't let other reviews fool you, the kit lens is definitely nowhere near as sharp as some are suggesting, go with the 35mm F/1.4 or get on the waiting list for the x100s like I did. All in all I would still recommend this camera keeping your expectations in check.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkable images I'm an advanced amateur photographer with a lot of workshops under my belt. I own a Canon 5D Mk3 and use that as my reference. This is a second camera for travel and casual shooting. The portability is substantially better than the Canon. The pictures are as sharp and the colors as true. The controls are intuitive and very easy to use; a big plus for the camera. Reviewers focus (no pun intended)on the autofocus because it seems slower than a top notch SLR. I haven't noted any issues so far and I never intended to shoot sports or action shots with this. For it's purpose, a highly portable pro quality camera capable of producing high resolution photographs, the X-E1 fulfills its mission splendidly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great camera...when it focuses. I love the styling of the X-E1, but the unit that I got would only focus about 60% of the time. It had nothing to do with learning the camera, it just would not focus, whether on a tripod or hand-held, with the 35mm or the 18-55mm. When it did focus, especially with the 35mm f/1.4, the images were tack sharp and gorgeous. The JPEG quality is superb, which is great since there seems to be issues with the RAF format and LR. I know several people who have them and they all love them. I think I just got a lemon, so back it went. I'm not sure if I'll get another or go up to the XPro1 and hope it doesn't suffer from the same AF issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic camera As an amateur photographer, I enjoy shooting landscapes, nature and astrophotography. I recently began reading about mirror-less cameras and the fact that they more portable and easy to use. After careful consideration, the Fujifilm X-E1 was my final choice. The color rendition and clarity are superb. The camera's controls are well laid out and its user-friendly. It contains the latest in tech.and much more. In all, I love the looks, the feel and the sharp photos it produces. I would like to see Fujiifilm offer more lenses. I haven't owned it long enough to offer much criticism or negative issues.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I loved/hated it I primarily shoot portraits both in studio with strobes and in the field with and without supplemental lights. My style is to catch people in motion or mid expression and with active body language. I currently use a Nikon D700 and loved it but I recently injured my back and now need a lighter Camera/lens combination. The Fuji X-E1 has excellent high ISO performanceand the 18-55mm lens is sharp edge to edge but the view finder jitters so much when you pan to follow your subject that it prevents nailing the instant when that sparkle of personality comes. If I shot stationary subjects or scenics the Fuji would be the answer to my need for a lighter weight high performance camera but unfortunately I had to return it and hope that future iterations will focus quickly enough to do the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A photographer's camera This is a camera for the photographer who wants to control the camera, not be controlled by it. Most quality cameras today can be set manually, but few of them have all of those controls at your fingertips. Yes, the camera can also become as automatic as you'd like it to be. Yes, this camera and lens combination are light, smaller than a hi-end DSLR and far easier to carry around. Yes, this camera and lens combination produce superb image quality. But for me, it's the ease of assuming control of the camera that make it special.Another major consideration is the lineup of superb lenses Fuji offers for this series of cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, what a great little camera There are some different and quirky things about the X-E1, namely, the EVF but after you get used to it, the camera is a joy to use. The optics are first rate. Fujinon lenses rock. The image quality is fantastic. I am especially surprised at the quality I am getting at ISO 800. Effectively, it's as good as the lower ISO's. As a professional architectural photographer, I am used to the quality that Canon optics and file size delivers, but I have never been pleased with the performance at higher ISO. The little X-E1 outshines the big guys. I love the panoramic feature. It is quick and easy to use. Also, fun to fool the camera into taking whacky pano's.
