WD VelociRaptor overview

  • 1Description

The WD 2TB My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt Desktop Hard Drive features a 2TB capacity, two 10,000 rpm drives and dual Thunderbolt ports for added speed when transferring data. It also features RAID capability, a user-serviceable and replaceable hard drive and the ability to daisy-chain multiple devices.

The Thunderbolt speeds of 10Gbps and the 10,000 rpm of the drives combine for data transfer rates that equal transfer of a full-length Blu-Ray movie in just over 60 seconds, 500 photos in 30 seconds and 2,000 MP3 files in 10 seconds. Data transfer rates will vary according to user hardware and software configurations.

You can also daisy-chain up to six other Thunderbolt devices, and since the VelociRaptor has two Thunderbolt ports it does not need to reside at the end of the chain. You can hook up a display and another Thunderbolt-enabled device to monitor drive efficiency. Thankfully, this comes with a Thunderbolt cable.

The unit comes with WD Drive Utilities software so that you can run diagnostics, manage the RAID modes or register your device. The drive also comes preformatted as Mac OS X HFS+ journaled, but compatibility may vary depending on the user's hardware configuration and operating system. When setting the RAID modes, you can format the disks as HFS+ Journaled, or exFAT, which is ideal when running Windows OS on a Mac.

VelociRaptor Speed
With the speed of two 10,000 rpm WD VelociRaptor drives inside united with the speed of Thunderbolt technology your data will transfer quickly.
User-Configurable for Speed and Data
Customize this dual-drive storage system to your needs - RAID 0 for speed, RAID 1 for data protection or JBOD to use the drives individually. Choose RAID 0 (striping) for the performance you need when designing or editing graphic-intensive media files. When the drive is set to RAID 1 (mirroring) it provides double-safe data protection by automatically generating a duplicate copy of your data. Set the drive to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) to use as two individual drives and select between HFS+Journaled or exFAT per disk.
Move Data Quickly
The Thunderbolt connector provides two channels of up to 10Gb/s transfer rate in both directions, allowing data to travel both ways without compromising bandwidth. This means video files are imported faster and visual effects are rendered quickly.
Simply open the case and exchange an existing drive. If you fill up a drive, you can simply remove it and replace it with a fresh drive and begin saving even more of your work.
WD Drive Utilities
Register your drive, run diagnostics, manage RAID or JBOD modes and more using WD Drive Utilities.
Daisy-Chain for More Capacity and Speed
The dual Thunderbolt ports allow you to daisy-chain more drives for more speed and higher capacity. Connect a Thunderbolt display and other Thunderbolt-enabled peripherals to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity. Because the unit contains two Thunderbolt units, it does not have to be at the end of the chain of peripherals.

    WD VelociRaptor reviews

2TB My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt Desktop Hard Drive is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Holy speed!! I bought this setup to backup my top portrait and event photos. I especially liked that you can swap the drives so once you fill them up you can still you this same docking system. The setup was really quick and I changed it from striped raid mode to mirroring mode, when in stripe raid the speed is crazy fast. I'm talking over 360MBPS! Once I put it in mirror mode I got about 150MBPS through a disk speed test. So far so good and the transfer speeds through thunderbolt with LightRoom 5 are working great. I was not expecting it to be so loud but with a top speed of 10,000rpm I can understand where all the nose comes from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Speed Drive Suitable for Editing I did a lot of research on external drives/RAID arrays with USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt and found this drive to be the fastest desktop option available aside from a RAID setup using SSDs and USB 3.0. The real speed comes from this drive's RAID 0 / Striped out-of-the-box formatting combined with the transfer speed of Thunderbolt connection. The only downside to this setup is that if just one of the two drives in this setup goes down, then you will lose all of your data. Since I use cloud services for both personal and business data, my fail-safe solution was to house my cloud service folder directories on the Velociraptor. This means if for some reason one of the drives becomes corrupted, I would be able to restore everything from the cloud once I replaced the bad drive. I ran a read/write disk speed test on the drive and both read and write speeds averaged just around 360Mb/Sec (356.6 Write & 376.0 Read). This makes the drive suitable to work with live footage up to 10 bit 4:4:4 2K quality. Additionally the drive sleeps and wakes in sync with my iMac, so I don't worry too much about its life-span being driven down by unnecessary up-time. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great drive for speedy performance I bought this to replace a LaCie 2Big drive that failed and took my most important files with it. Granted I have completely reworked my back-up system, but I prefer the speed of this drive, the quiet operation and the confidence knowing the folks who attempted the repair on the Seagate drives in the LaCie said they have far more love for WD vs. Seagate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect fit This bad boy is my media drive. I was hard-pressed to find a better solution. If you want speed, space, and affordability then this is the perfect drive. I use it with my 2013 MacPro, and together they are crazy fast. I also like the fact that I can replace the drives when they're filled up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speed I felt lucky to find a Thunderbolt drive at such a great price. This drive makes use of the Thunderbolt connection on my Macbook Pro and allows me to use it for photo storage. It is as fast as the internal drive so it expands the system with no loss in speed. Highly recommended if you have that Thunderbolt connection unused. The drive comes with a cable and is formatted for a Mac. Easy setup.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good drive Got this on sale as a Thunderbolt audio drive for my project studio. I use the two thunderbolt ports to connect to my Mac and my other thunderbolt drive - so this sits in the middle of the chain. Th other drive holds my virtual instruments and samples. Recording has been good, though I have gotten several buffer overrun errors. I haven't been able to determine root cause yet. Prior to using this drive I never got those errors. It could be simply the passthru that's causing the problem, but I just haven't seen enough from the error messages yet. It happens maybe once every hundred to two hundred takes. Not very often, but often enough so that I notice. The drive has periods when it is loud as well. Loud enough that I need to put a little auralex around it when recording live. But the 10k speed is really nice and my read/write speeds are good. If I could have afforded it I would have probably gone with SSD, but for the money this was a good deal.
