The A-88 from Roland is an easy-to-use, streamlined and portable MIDI controller featuring 88 pro-quality weighted keys for a grand piano type feel. The controller provides the functions, appearance, and texture of keyboards found on the company's flagship pianos, with the action delivering natural resistance-gradation from the low to high keys. Additionally, the white keys feature a comfortable, moisture-absorbent surface that feels like real ivory. Even with the weighted keyboard, the A-88 remains slim, compact, and easy to transport.
Aside from the obligatory modulation/pitch wheel and octave and transpose buttons, dedicated dual and split buttons allow for instantly accessing layers and zones. The controller also features the company's D-BEAM that responds to the performer's hand gestures for creating unusual modulation possibilities. The keyboard can assign all its controllers automatically for full utilization of external SuperNATURAL instruments such as the INTEGRA-7 sound module, or the JUPITER-80 and JUPITER-50 synthesizers.
The recessed rear panel keeps the connectors tucked away without impeding the placement of a computer monitor. The two knobs, two switches, the two dual/split buttons and the D-BEAM controller are all easily accessible and arranged to allow for fast and fluid workflow. Octave buttons offer immediate control of the key scale, and a transpose button adjusts the scale in semitone steps. LED indicators provide visual feedback of the octave/transpose settings.
Other settings can be accessed via the Function button, which allows the keys to perform additional tasks printed above the keyboard. Using an optional Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit allows the keyboard to provide pro-playability while retaining mobility when working with iPad apps. The controller can be powered either via the included AC adaptor, or from a computer's USB bus.
