2TB G-DRIVE USB 3.1 Gen 1 External Desktop Hard Drive is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 125.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 14 months since new, won't open files This is a backup drive that I copy all my video and photo files to from my Dell work station. After 14 months of good service and only about 20% full, it suddenly failed to open on bootup and got an error that if I wanted to use the drive I needed to format the disc. Tried on 2 computers, same. Tech support says based on looking in the properties, it is corrupted. They say I have to buy a data rescue pkg and see if I can get the files out. Unit was never disconnected, and same files put on it that are in my Dell D drive that works fine. This is my first ever G-Tech drive. Not a good experience so far. Will report back if it is recovered.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has a sleeping problem I bought this drive because the usual eSATA version was not in stock. Figured that this was the next evolution of the G-Drive I know and love. But as it turns out, Hitachi has put a green drive, with imbedded sleep programming, that cannot be turned off, even in system prefs. This means that the drive spins down all the time, and re-accessing the drive takes a good few seconds to spinning back up (first world problem, I know), which is an inconvenience at the least. Also, I found that after spinning down, and spinning back up, the drive was inaccessible for some reason, until I restarted it. Not co-operating. Sent it back for the eSATA version. I'm sure I'll be happy with the replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much Better Than Expected I purchased this external drive from a friend, who got a clearance price from BB. I use the drive on my Mac mini with usb 3.0 and my late 2009 Mac Pro with a Sonnet Technologies usb 6.0 card. When checking speeds with Black Magic, the usb 3.0 speed on both machines was around 134MB/s.That is not bad. Just to see how accurate the Black Magic speed was, I copeid and pasted a 22.55gb. blu-ray ISO file to the G Drive. It took exactly 2 minutes and 27 seconds to complete the task on both machines. So, on my Macs with usb 3.0, the G Drive is running at about 9 gb/s. Not bad, when thunderbolt 1 is rated at 10gb/s.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ist Bad G-Drive First one had problems loading pictures for lightroom library, than after drive went to sleep and I went to eject the drive, it wounldn't.Had to eventually force eject it. Took it back to B&H no problem.Got another one, same problem after drive wakes up , can't eject it, have to force eject. Brought it back to B&H no problem.Getting the 2TB drive that does not have usb3. I was using the firewire 800 port. I have 4 G-Drives anywhere from 6 to 2 years old and not a problem with any of them.I swear by G-Drives, these drives I swore AT.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, Sleeps Well Used for Time Machine on an iMAc running OSX 10.8.3. Hooked it up, went through setup, and drive works just fine. Goes to sleep, with periodic wake up periods if the Mac is awake. Its not loud, but louder than the iMac (which is practically silent). Of course it is silent when asleep, which is most of the time. Haven't measured speed, but no complaints. The drive with its metal casing has a Very Solid feel, and looks good, FWIW. The 'headlight' is quite bright, but easily hidden behind the monitor, so doesn't bother me. Would have given it 5 stars if it was as silent as the iMac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, I would buy this product again. I own this same hard drive in a 1 terabyte size and I ran out of room with it and needed a larger size. I use it for backing up my Mac computer. I had partitioned the original one using 700 and 300 Megabytes. The larger one I used for a full computer backup, and the smaller one as a sandbox backup. After a few years the amount of information got too large for the 700 partition. This new 2 terabyte one I will use only for backing up the entire computer, and will use the original 1 terabyte one for a sandbox backup, plus storing pictures and miscellaneous folders and files. I have never had any problem with the 1 terabyte G hard drive and that is why I purchased this new, larger one by the same maker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Far So Good! I am a budding videographer who needed space to expand my storage beyond my internal hard drive and needed a way to conveniently take footage between the classroom and home. I haven't had much of an opportunity to use it yet, but from what I can tell, the product is very sturdy. I did research on G-Drive, and they seemed to be a reliable, durable, and cost-effective brand. The only downside is that G-Drive sells their products specifically for Mac. If you are a tech-savvy person, it isn't difficult to run it on Windows, but you have to reformat it first.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from HI Quality External Hard Drive I was looking for a fast external hard drive with dual Firewire ports for storage of original digital video media. A friend had recently purchased the G-Tech 750 GB portable hard drive and I was impressed with the construction. I purchased the 2 TB unit and am very pleased with it so far. It is definitely a desk top unit as its case is somewhat large but very rugged. The drive is very fast with a daisy chain Firewire connection from my video camera to the drive then to my desktop computer. My only negative might be that the drive is a little noisy when it is reading/writing compared to most internal drives but not objectionably so. When it is idle, it is completely silent. I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a good external media storage unit.
