AJA KUMO Overview

The KUMO 3232 Compact SDI Router from AJA provides signal control and supports full broadcast specifications over 3G-SDI with quality that exceeds SMPTE specifications. This compact 2 RU format router is designed for broadcast, production, or postproduction environments including mobile sports trucks, edit suites, corporate video installations, or live theatrical A/V rigs.

This router features 32 3G-SDI inputs and outputs and has a Linux embedded operating system. It is network-ready and supports HTTP control and monitoring via a web browser, without the need for any additional software. It can be integrated with existing infrastructure utilizing the industry-standard Grass Valley Native Protocol over RS-422 or Ethernet. Ethernet network connectivity also allows you to control this router from any web browser on a network-connected device.

Powerful Signal Control
The cross-point routing matrix maps any input to any number of outputs without the need for additional patch panels or distribution amplifiers. It can be configured for ganged dual and quad port routing, allowing users to group together multiple inputs and outputs for dual link, 4K, and UltraHD workflows.
Salvo Simplicity
The Salvos support simplifies switching operations by recalling multiple sources to specific destinations. Eight Salvos can be configured and stored in this router and can be recalled via the Web UI, GVG Native Protocol over Ethernet, RS-232, and/or the KUMO CP2 Salvos buttons.
Simple Installation and Configuration
With an embedded Linux operating system, this router is network-ready and supports HTTP control and monitoring via a web browser, without the need for any additional software. The auto-detect Bonjour/Zeroconf protocols mean that network configuration is automatic. By connecting it to a network or computer the system will self-configure, and be ready for use. Alternatively, standard network configuration allows access to the router via its default IP address.
KUMO Control Panel
The KUMO CP2 and KUMO CP are optional control panels that can be used in standalone or network configurations. They enable full control from any location without the need for a computer by connecting via Ethernet to the same network as the KUMO routers. Up to four KUMO routers can be controlled from a single control panel. The KUMO CP2 offers direct access to all 32 inputs and 32 outputs.

As a key component to route on the fly- AJA delivers with this one. Well worth the investment. *Note* I don't think they make the grey front anymore. The router I received has a blue stripe and larger logo screen printed on the front.

Basically in this price range it comes down to AJA or BlackMagic, I've worked with both & knowing that AJA tends to be a bit pricier, I 100% prefer the KUMO over the BMD 20x20 or 40x40 Physically the SDI connectors are spaced well versus BlackMagic, even with all connections loaded up I can quickly adjust by hand without the need of a trompeter if the situation arises. The Kumo is also way thinner & operates at a much lower temp, giving me a little peace of mind if I need to spec a quick fly pack that has less than optimal ventilation. The web UI is great & the unit saves all your settings independently of what computer you are using over the network. I know I can prep the KUMO for a gig, send it out & all my button mapping & labels will not change no matter who is looking at it or what computer they are using (unlike the BMD which is a session based setting via saved XML file). Basically its a solid router, if you can afford it & it has the # of ins/outs ya need. You can't go wrong.

Does this unit matches framerate and size of ins and outs, or everything needs to be settled to match previously?
Asked by: Nicols
This unit does not have scaling built in. All Resolutions and Frame Rates need to match before it reaches the Kumo 3232 Router.

Trying to compare to BM 12x12 router. Does Kumo have reclocking on all SDI inputs? How loud is the fan? The BM is unbearable loud
Asked by: James
The SDI connections will re-clock. This product is designed to allow you to assign any of the 16 SDI inputs to any of the 16 outputs. Because of that you should expect it to make some level of noise from the fan cooling it down.

What would happen if you tried to input one source as 1080p59.94 and another source as 1080p60 (or anything besides 1080p59.94, etc)? Understood the unit will not scale, but will it accept the alt source or just appear black?

Asked by: MACAULAY
According to AJA, if a route exists in the KUMO and the incoming signal is connected to the KUMO input, the delay time between the incoming signal and the output signal is less than 5 ns.
