    Plustek 8100 reviews

OpticFilm 8100 Film Scanner is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 88.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Win, win, 3600 dpi 35mm scan.. I read a lot of reviews on it and most sites seem to be complaining about the slowness. The scanner is slow scanning at full 7200 dpi resolution if you are using the included Silverfast software. The software is slow. From scanning to actually saving the file, it took me 10 minutes from scanning 1 frame. I only use VueScan with it and the time was cut in half. The preview speed is quick, under 10s. Is a fast scanner using VueScan. I am totally happy with the scanner. I never like to shoot in 35mm because I used to use a lowend flatbed scanner. Mainly shoot medium format. With the Plustek 8100, I am totally committed in shoot 35mm now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value, just ditch the software I love this scanner for the quality of the scans it produces. Initially I thought it was very slow, but that improved dramatically when I abandoned the Silverlight software and switched to Vuescan. Better previews, much faster scanning, easier to use, and thus better images (it would also be nice if Plustek gave us Linux drivers, by the way). In any case, this machine has surprised me. Not just for its image quality but also because after a year in the tropics it shows no signs of dust, fungus, corrosion (sea air). It reliably performs its duties in my analog --> digital workflow and I hope it will continue to do so. A much better buy than a digital camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite Good for the Money I have seen quite many complaints about the SilverFast software included. But I tried on my Mac and it worked pretty well as long as you don't use the dust removal function which I don't trust anyway because it removes some fine lines in the photo as well. Anyway, this scanner is not bad for 135mm slides and negatives which is not big image anyway. I mostly use 2400ppi or a little bigger format to scan most slides. 7200ppi only interpolate the image but not really give you the fine resolution. Colors are not accurate, but it always need to be adjusted in PhotoShop. This is only a cost effective machine, what can you get out of that money? I am quite satisfied. I will recommend to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow? I immediately started scanning slides and color negatives. I used the quick scan button to see if the image was something I wanted to keep. If it was, then I used Intelliscan button and selected the SilverFast work flow option. I opted to save the scans to PSD format for Photoshop. The detailed scans took about 20 seconds. I am not sure where other reviewers were coming up with the 25 minute scan times. Of course I was only scanning at 2400 bpi, since I do not want to hang them on my wall. I am totally happy with this scanner, starting with the quality of the packaging, and continuing with the quality and ease of the scanner itself. If there were more than five stars, I would gladly give them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Price/performance ratio I give a four star review for this scanner considering its low price and easy setup. I think that, while not being the best scanner on the market, it is convenient enough for its price range. I consider myself a perfectionist. In the beginning i was unsure about the quality of the scan. For example, I scanned some badly developed PanF and got a lot of sharpness out of it. If you look for review on the web, you will find that the scanner's optical resolution is lower than its digital resolution. It is true. I find not useful to scan up 5000 dpi. However with this you can get about a good 16Mpx

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done After a couple of weeks, I'm reasonably satisfied. The scanner is fast, but lacks ICE or any kind of good dust removal capability, and has no manual focus tweaking. If your film originals are not in pristine condition, expect to spend a fair bit of time working on them. The Silverfast software that comes with renders reasonably decent color, but only with 8-bit output. Getting usable 16-bit images appears to require the purchase of a higher grade of Silverfast. For the price it's a good deal. It's entirely adequate for casual or web-based images, but the entire setup lacks features needed for professional use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Film Scanner! This scanner gives superb scan results of 35mm film, on par with expensive scans from professional labs. The highest 7200 dpi scan resolution is actually over sampling the film gran too much, so I use the second-best 3400 dpi option which gives TIFF or JPG files that correspond to approximately 48 Mpixel. The included software is OK for occasional use bus slow, so if you are Sir Scanalot, do yourself a favor and get VueScan, which speeds up the process by many factors and offers more control over the scan parameters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An Excellent choice for accurate film scans I bought this scanner for my father who is scanning several thousand slides and negatives for archival storage. There is a lot of flexibility with the included software for changing the color depth and balance of your transparencies. I was only disappointed that the frames that hold the film are not as firmly held in place as I felt they should be requiring some adjustment to keep the image square in the scanner. If the film holder is inserted upside-down it is very firmly seated and it seems that it would work better if it were used that way. I haven't tried it but I may do this. While not as fast as I might have hoped, this is an excellent product overall which I recommend for its accuracy and ease of use.
