Leica 14496 overview

  • 1Description

The Handgrip M from Leica is the basic handgrip for the Leica M Digital Rangefinder. It attaches to the camera's base plate and provides a stable grip for the right hand while shooting. It is particularly useful when shooting one-handed or while using heavier lenses in order to maintain stability. A textured black rubber surface provides a sure grip and a screw mount is available for the optional finger loops that can be attached for further control.

Note: No integrated electronic functions are provided through this grip.

    Leica 14496 reviews

Handgrip M is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Design 101? A handgrip is essential for both control of the camera, and security- the M Typ 240 is heavy at 680 gms and fairly smooth, and dropping it would not be a good experience. I bought the grip and am very happy I did so. However why the Leica designers ignored the need for what most other camera manufacturers see as standard I have no idea. Perhaps they were scared of the screams from Leica traditionalists. The improved thumb grip on the Typ 240 is good, but it's still very easy to let the camera slip. The only flaw in the grip's design is that once it is fitted, the tripod attachment is no longer centred under the lens, which would make panoramas less than optimal. Report card: Can do better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised, but I'm giving this item 5-stars but only reluctantly. This handgrip works very well and is, in my opinion, a MUST HAVE with the Leica M Typ 240. This grip provides much needed stability, particularly when using heavier M-lenses (such as the Noctilux, 90mm Summicron, etc.). And I bought this version vs. the MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE model with electronics capability because I just won't use those added features. However, at $$$, and given the simplicity of the construction of this handgrip, even for Leica, it's overpriced. So there it is, a dedicated Leica person such as myself has finally tossed in the towel and I admit that I've finally found a Leica item that has tested my propensity to overspend. But if you've got an M, get a grip!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I can take it or leave it. After having tried this accessory, I will probably be leaving it off the camera more than on. For use with most normal-sized M lenses, it simply gets in the way. These are not your usually grips in that the handle piece stops short of the top of the body, so used with normal sized lenses such as the 35, 50 or 75mm Summicrons, the extra grip is neither needed or all that comfortable and is more in the way than anything else. I answered no in recommending it and only would do so if someone was using a really exotic, large aperture lens such as the 50mm f1 or one of the huge Cosina-Voigtlander f0.95 lenses, but even then I just don't see it as being all that ergonomic.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great compliment to the M but way overpriced Compliments the M well but it should have also included a USB port so you don't always have to take the card out of the camera. I would have given it a 5 but it's very expensive for what it does.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Handgrip M disappointing Well, it works. But it is not nearly as nice as the Leica Handgrip for the M9-P. For example, the bottom cover is not made of metal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is just what I needed I get a little crazy holding a $10,000 camera in one hand. Yes I sometimes use a strap which is good, but I like more security when I go one-handed in the grip makes it much safer. It fits perfectly, it is easy to attach and detach, and works even better when I attach the finger loops to it. I also use the little thumb grip that slips into the hot shoe. These three additions give me a very strong sense of security.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Valuable piece of gear This hand grip is a valuable addition to any Leica M kit. Especially when using heavier lenses this helps balance the camera much more easily. It does make changing batteries and cards a little more complicated but not by much. It's certainly overpriced but if you buy this then you've already bought a Leica so it shouldn't be a shock.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey, but nice addition When you spend as much as it costs to purchase a Digital Leica M camera, why wouldn't you put a sturdy handgrip on it. I feel much more comfortable carrying mine with the grip than without it.
