If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White/Black) with Light Stand Kit from B&H Photo. In addition to the large 7' umbrella, this kit includes a 9.5' light stand, a triple-flash adapter mount, and an umbrella bracket with an adjustable shoe.

This 7' parabolic umbrella is a really huge, broad light source that wraps light around your subject, yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. Put another way, if you combined a beauty dish with a softbox, you'd have a parabolic umbrella.

This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. Instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass. The fixed black backing ensures that all of the light output is on your subject instead of through the umbrella. You can also vary the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft for a harder or softer look or for longer throw capability. With the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

The Impact 9.5' light stand is heavy-duty black aluminum, with sure-twist section locks and air cushioning. Air cushioning gently lowers the light, preventing damage to light fixtures and fingers when section locks have not been properly tightened.

The Impact FA-300HS Triple-Flash Hot Shoe Adapter Mount allows you to mount, sync and fire up to three flashes from this single adapter. You can fire the flashes at full power for greater light output or, for faster recycle times, fire them at half power to conserve the energy. This unique adapter features a female 1/4"-20 thread for universal mounting, and may be combined with an umbrella, light panel, or other lighting accessories (all sold separately).

The Impact Umbrella Bracket with Adjustable Shoe is a versatile, lightweight metal bracket that includes a removable, reversible female stud to adapt to light stands with top studs smaller than the standard 5/8". An additional removable, reversible male stud mounts to the included flash shoe at the 1/4"-20 end, or to another accessory at the 3/8" end. The metal shoe features a knurled locking knob for secure mounting of all standard shoe-mount flashes.

Impact 7' Improved Parabolic Umbrella (White/Black)

If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Impact 7' Improved Parabolic Umbrella with a black exterior and a white interior. First of all, it's a huge broad light source that wraps light around your subject, yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. Put another way, if you combined a beauty dish with a softbox, you'd have a parabolic umbrella.

This umbrella has a unique structural design as well. Instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass. The fixed black backing ensures that all of the light output is bounced back on your subject instead of through the umbrella. You can also vary the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft for a harder or softer look, or for longer throw capability. In addition, an optional diffuser is available for this umbrella, which effectively converts it to a large softbox with just a 1/2 stop loss of output.

The umbrella features an improved finger-friendly locking mechanism for secure and fast set up and break down.

Improved Locking Mechanism
Improved locking mechanism provides fast and secure and "finger-friendly" set up and break down.
Parabolic Shape
The parabolic shape produces a more natural wraparound light than a regular umbrella. This soft and natural light is what makes this umbrella a favorite of wedding and portrait photographers.
Wide Diameter
The 7' diameter ensures a soft light quality. This umbrella produces enough light for stunning group photos. It will also emit a broad enough beam for full-length portraits.
White Interior, Black Exterior
The white interior produces a broad light that delivers an even throw, which is perfect for portraits and groups. The soft quality of the light is great for creamy skin tones. The black backing efficiently eliminates back spill so light isn't lost when bouncing the beam toward your subject.
16-Rib Design
For an umbrella to be effective, it needs to maintain its shape, and the fabric should remain taut. The umbrella features a 16-rib design that maintains the shape of the umbrella and the tension of the fabric for an even light spread.

Impact FA-300HS Triple-Flash Hot Shoe Adapter Mount

The FA-300HS Triple-Flash Hot Shoe Adapter Mount from Impact allows you to mount, sync and fire up to three flashes from this single adapter. You can fire the flashes at full power for greater light output or, for faster recycle times, fire them at half power to conserve the energy. This unique adapter features a female 1/4"-20 thread for universal mounting, and may be combined with an umbrella or other similar lighting accessories (all sold separately).

The mount has a 3.5mm jack that allows you to use a sync cord to connect the adapter to your camera or wireless receiver. If you own an Impact PowerSync DC Radio Slave System or a similar wireless unit, you can fire them all with a single receiver attached to the adapter. While not designed for use with high-voltage flashes, you can mix and match flashes from most major digital camera manufacturers without issue - though the electrical requirements should always be considered beforehand.

Mount and sync three different shoe-mount flashes with a single bracket, and fire all three with a wireless receiver. You can also mix and match flashes from most major digital camera manufacturers.
The adapter has a female 1/4"-20 thread for universal mounting, and a 1/8" (3.5 mm) jack for a sync cord or wireless receiver.

Nice And Beautiful Light At A Cost

The Light That This Produces Is Extremely Soft And Beautiful But It's Also As Cheaply Made As The Price Suggests. My Light Fell Over In The Wind Because I Stupidly Forgot My Sandbag. The Umbrella Was Absolutely Destroyed. The Shaft Shattered And Wasn't Salvageable AT ALL. Thankfully It Broke The Fall Of My Light And Saved Me From Having To Replace An Expensive Broncolor Monolight. With That Said, I Replaced It With Another One Because The Light Is Beautiful. Cheap And Beautiful.

What’s the difference between white and silver umbrellas?

The silver umbrellas maximize the light output and eliminate most or all unwanted color casting, resulting in a crisp and sharp look. The white umbrellas create a softer and more neutral look.

I was going to use this with the attachable diffuser for more of a soft box look. My thought was to get white to soften it even more compared to the silver (possibly still hot coming through the diffuser), however do you think I would just be wasting too much light with the white since it’s translucent with the black backing?
Asked by: Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth, A lot of image makers use the diffuser on the umbrella with the white interior to further soften the light. It really comes down to the look you are going for.

Is this a true "parabolic" umbrella?
Asked by: Chris
Most umbrellas, like the Impact 7' Improved Parabolic Umbrella (White/Black), are parabolic style. The Broncolor Para 177 Reflector F Kit, BH #BRP177FK, is more of a parabolic umbrella (https://bhpho.to/46fYmmr).
