Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens and EF610 DG ST Flash Kit for Sony from B&H Photo is a lens/flash kit offering two superb products for your Sony Alpha camera. The lens is a versatile wide-angle to telephoto zoom macro lens providing the focal lengths to shoot in almost all situations, including a minimum focus distance of 13.8" (35 cm) for close-up macro photography.

Optical Stabilization (OS) provides compensation for camera movement and delivers clear, blur-free images when shooting telephoto and in low light. A Special Low Dispersion Glass element and three aspherical elements, including one double-sided aspherical lens, reduce chromatic aberration and provide sharp imaging throughout the zoom range. Super Multi-layer Lens Coating reduces flare and ghosting and an included petal-type lens hood will deflect unwanted light from entering the lens. A Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) allows for smooth and silent autofocus which is particularly desirable when shooting video with your DSLR.

At 3.5" (8.9 cm) long, it is a very compact lens for its wide focal range and Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction and a brass mount offer durability and consistent functionality in varying temperatures and situations.

The Sigma EF610 DG ST Flash for Sony is a hot-shoe mount flash unit with TTL automatic flash exposure and an auto zoom function that adjusts the flash angle based on the chosen focal length of the lens (from 24-105mm). A built-in wide panel extends the flash angle to 17mm for wide-angle shooting. Manual control is also available to control the flash power from full to 1/16 power. The Guide Number for the EF610 is 61 m at ISO 100 and 105mm.

The flash head can be tilted up 90º and down 7º and swivelled 90º to the right and 180º to the left for flexible bounce control.

  • Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM for Sony Alpha Cameras

If you have a Sony camera with a smaller-size APS-C sensor and Alpha mount, then the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM from Sigma is an incredibly versatile lens that is a real jack-of-all-trades lens you can carry in any situation. With a focal length spanning from a wide-angle 18mm up to a 250 mm telephoto zoom, with macro capabilities to boot, Sigma's 18-250mm could easily be your camera's first all-in-one lens, or a great replacement for several smaller lenses that you're looking to consolidate.

Sigma redesigned the optical and structural design of this lens in order to achieve a relatively compact size, at 4.0" long, as well as a close minimum focusing distance of 13.8" for macro photography. Their Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction maintains the structure of the lens, with little variation despite changing temperatures. The lens also incorporates a brass-made bayonet mount, to further reinforce the lenses durability and resistance to wear and tear over time.

The minimum focusing distance is the same throughout the focal length of the entire zoom range, and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. As an added benefit over fixed focal length macro lenses, the size and framing of subjects can quickly and easily be adjusted by rotating the zoom ring. For even further convenience, at each focusing distance on the side of the lens barrel, the maximum magnification ratio is also displayed.

For high image quality, you know you've got to have high quality glass, and Sigma has incorporated their Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element into the 18-250mm. In addition to the SLD element, three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, have been used in the lens' construction--offering excellent correction of color aberration, for better clarity and quality of images throughout the zoom range.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to reduce flare and ghosting with this lens. This makes it resistant to strong incident light, such as backlight behind a subject, providing sharper, high contrast images even shooting into a light source. To prevent internal reflections from occurring, the included petal-type lens hood can be attached in order to block out extraneous light.

For a lens that offers a wide-angle to telephoto focal length, and the ability to zoom-in with macro photography, Sigma's 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM made for Sony cameras is more than a match. Whether you're on a macro product shoot, a walk in the park, or have a wedding to go to, this lens will help you shoot high quality images in any situation.

Possibilities as Wide as its Zoom Range
Going from an 18mm wide-angle lens in the park, to an 85mm portrait lens at a wedding, and later attaching a heavy 250mm lens for wildlife or sport photography means you'll have to carry pounds of gear around with you, by hand or on your back, all day long. With the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM, you won't have to risk dust entering your Sony camera body, dropping one of your lenses as the bride's aunt runs into you with a glass of wine, or fumbling to switch to your zoom lens as you watch an eagle soar away--missing opportunities because you had the wrong lens at the time
    In Close, or Wide Open
Not only is the zoom range excellent for a variety of situations, but the focus range is also conducive to macro photography--with the added benefit of zooming in on the tiniest textures or creatures. With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 you can get an up-close and personal shot of the petals of a flower, then immediately zoom out and catch a group photo before anyone blinks
    Compact Construction
Incorporating double-sided aspherical lenses, and redesigning the lenses construction, Sigma has made improvements in keeping this lens at a relatively compact size, yet still achieving an outstanding zoom range. The filter thread diameter has been reduced to 62mm--while, with a 13x zoom range, the length of the lens still remains a mere 3.4" long
    Tough Exterior, yet Quality Interior
While the design and construction of the lens has kept it relatively compact, the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material has been used to keep it strong and resistant to weathering effects. In addition, a brass made bayonet mount reinforces the strength applied to the surface of the lens. The combination of these features leads to reduced contractility with changing temperatures, a higher quality of lens construction, and allows for slimmer parts to be used--keeping it compact and strong
    Flare, Aberrations, and Ghosting Reduction
Everybody says you should invest in your glass, and Sigma's 18-250mm provides just the way for you to do that. Three aspherical glass elements offer correction for distortion, four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements provide optimum color correction and sharpness, and a Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. This array of optical features assure high image quality throughout the entire zoom range, and widely varying lighting situations.

    Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM for Sony Alpha Cameras is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of Power in a Compact Package I use the product for general photography including wide angle and telephoto, as well as normal shots. I also shoot a great deal of of macrophotographs of flowers.I use it on a Sony Alpha 700. I wish they would make it for a full frame camera. I have shot lots of pictures with no problems. The only problem I had was with Sigma postponing shipment to B and H. It took 2 1/2 months to receive, but it was well worth the wait. I think the long waiting time is Sigma just does not think Sony cameras are as popular as those of Canon and Nikon. It is the ideal lens for travel (photo safari type trips excluded). It does great on landscapes and moderate telephoto shots. It is a very impressive lens which I would highly recommend to anyone serious about photography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great carry around lens Use at museums, events and outdoor lanscapes. I have even used it for Diorama work. Love the versatility, and wide angle. Ion a 1.5 crop factor camera ( my Sony a58) it really works well. I am sure I will get it dialed in even more as time goes by. I still have not found its sweet spot, as its been a pretty stable all around performer. Pic below is JUST as taken, NO post profuction, and its indoors, on a Very large object.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All-purpose lens Sigma's 18-250mm f3.5 lens replaces both the standard lens that came with the Sony a58 DSLR recently purchased as well as the optional 75-300 f4.0 lens that was part of the package. The beauty of this lens is its' permanence (no changing lenses to cover the focal length ranges I need). I'm a photographer for our local newspaper, the Desoto Times Tribune, and occasionally find myself at sports events where 'reach' is necessary since I'm either on the sidelines or the action is taking place in the distance (golf tournaments, etc.). The Sigma 18-250 has proven itself the ideal lens in these cases. It is small enough and light enough to handle easily, has the speed range useful enough and quality to match the high megapixels of the a58 (20-meg). Even at extremes (250mm at f5.6) the lens performs very well and the results are impressive. I highly recommend the Sigma 18-250 f3.5 to anyone looking for an all purpose lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good bang for your buck I'm a professional photographer and shoot outdoor events on Sony DSLR's. After my Sony DT 18-250 flaked out for the second time in two years (same problem, the autofocus mechanism in the lense just goes wonky in the middle of a shoot) I decided to switch over to this lense. Works just like the Sony model, and feels more solid, better built with less lense creep. The autofocusing is just a tad slower, but nothing that I even would have even noticed if I hadn't shot several hundred thousand photos on my old Sony DT 18-250 lense. Vignetting, light and autofocus all seem to be about the same for all intents and purposes, and after a few thousand shots it's still going strong. It's an affordable long zoom lense, so it's not going to shoot like a prime and is never going to be as razor sharp as a lense that costs 10x more... But for what it is and accepting the limitations of long zoom lense I'm very pleased with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens/Images But, Massive Lens Creep! This is a great addition to any Sony Alpha SLT/SLR camera. This lens takes some nice images. However, the only thing I wasn't to impressed with, was very noticeable Lens Creep throughout the zooming process. If you plan on taking some nice shots at the moon, or, other aerial shots, this lens would not suit your purchase. Besides that, I recommend this item for anyone who wants a nice telephoto lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty Consistent with other reviews I bought this product to make it easier to take photos of theatrical productions I am hired to photograph. Instead of constantly changing lenses I wanted one I could get a full stage and a close ups with. Here are some things I noticed: *The extreme ends of near or far are often blurry with this lens, while the middle is pretty consistent. *Natural light is alot easier to photograph with this lens than artificial light. I had never had this problem with another lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantasic for the price! I purchased this lens (6 months ago) for my A77 for when I am not using another specific lens. And now it seems to being doing it all. It compares to my G series for telephotos, and it is incredible on macro shots. And everything in between is excellent. A pleasant surprise at the price! All the great features of the A77 are still great with the Sigma; including the panorama feature. The only issue I have is the lens lock and lens creep. It only locks when retracted and the lens isn't very tight when telescoping. When doing macro shots in a downward direction the lens creeps big time. I solved the problem by placing a wide rubber band across the lens to hold the position. A simple solution for a small problem on a great lens. A must have when the camera is beside you on the seat of your vehicle ready at a moments notice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from why did it take so long? I waited a long time for a lens like Sigma's 18-250mm. I always hated to have to change from one lens to my telephoto, and I know I missed some good and cute shots. You would expected the lens to be a bit heavy and it is lighter than my telephoto lens. WOW 2 lens in one and light. So a big THANK YOU to Sigma.
