Sony HVL-F60M overview

  • 1Description

Powerful, and designed for both still photographers and videographers, the HVL-F60M External Flash from Sony is loaded with advanced features and capabilities, including complete ADI / P-TTL functionality, the Quick Shift Bounce system, wireless TTL control with ratio, and LED light, and a Quick Navi system with a large dot matrix LCD. Primarily, this unit sits at the top of its respective range due to the excellent guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 105mm. Also, the zoom head has a range of 24-105mm with full-frame cameras, which can be expanded to 15mm with the built-in wide-angle panel.

Other advanced capabilities of this flash include the Quick Shift Bounce system, which enables pivoting of the head 90° left and right. This allows photographers to keep the flash and LCD properly oriented during vertical shooting. Aiding usage is the Quick Navi control interface which provides comprehensive information on settings and status as well as a click wheel for making fast, intuitive changes on the large dot matrix LCD.

Wireless TTL is available with the top-of-the-line HVL-F60M and includes ratio control in addition to the standard wireless controller and remote flash functions. Ratio control enables setting different outputs for three separate groups of flashes in relation to one another. Specifically for videographers, an LED light has been integrated into this model with an output of 1200 lux at 1.6'. Also, this light has a built-in diffusion panel for softer output and the flash comes with a tungsten color conversion filter for it.

Along with all of these advanced features, this flash has a variety of standard settings, such as slow, high-speed, first and second curtain sync modes as well as a stroboscopic flash setting. It runs on 4 AA batteries which provide a recycle time of 0.1 to 3.5 seconds. Additionally, it is packaged with a bounce adapter, a terminal protector cap, a mini-stand, and a carrying case.

This unit is compatible with Sony's Multi Interface Shoe and is not natively compatible with the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe. Though, with the use of the included ADP-AMA Shoe Adapter, Sony cameras with the Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe can be adapted to use Multi Interface Shoe external flashes with full compatibility.

Advance Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering works with cameras and lenses with distance encoders to more accurately balance flash output with ambient light and subject reflectivity by taking camera-to-subject distance into account

Manual flash output from 1/1 to 1/256 in 1/3 or 1/2 EV steps

    Sony HVL-F60M reviews

HVL-F60M External Flash is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from High Priced Trash I have had my 60 for five years. The overheating issue was immediately apparent and started in the middle of a wedding shoot. Then it performed erratically. i.e. sometimes it worked and sometimes didn't (literally did not turn on). It is the single most frustrating product I have ever bought. Consumers ought to know that Sony's top of the line does not mean it is the best. Frankly, it is the worst and I own six flashes. Given the price I paid, Sony ought to be ashamed keeping this product on the market. I am very disappointed after a career in photography in which I have bought and used exclusively Sony equipment for over 30 years.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overheats quickly! I am using this flash with my A77 via the shoe adapter supplied, mainly for indoor shooting. I love the bouncer included and how automatically the flash will change settings when you mount the bouncer on it. Also the LED lighting is cool feature for DSLR video shooting, which also comes with 3200k converter. The main problem with this flash, is overheating! sadly, it overheats if you are using the flash continuously for 20 shots or so, then you will have to wait 10 minutes to cool down which is also not welcome! The new hot shoe mount is made of plastic, although it seems hard plastic, a metal shoe will be much more appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Flash I used the HVL-F60M during a local MMA sporting event and have used it to take portrait pictures . Needless to say it did a outstanding job allowing me to capture the fighters during the fight and follow up shots. I also wanted to see how bad the so called over heating that was rumored of occurring. I never got a overheat message, after 2 hours and going through a set of fresh batteries, the flash continued to perform optimally. The only negative thing I have for this flash is the weight and bulkiness. I used the flash with the a6000.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Off camera flash In order to use the HVL-f60M off camera with the Sony A7r, you need to order the FA-CS1M multi interface shoe to go on the camera, and the FA-MC1AM Off-Camera Flash Cable, with two male ends in order to connect the flash to the camera. Do not order the FA-EC1AM Cable, as it has one female end and one male end, which won't connect the flash to the shoe. However, it is useful as an extension cable for extra length. Flash seems to have valuable attributes, with led lights and bounce flash flap. But I have not found a way to get it to work with pocket wizards. Being limited to direct cable is a big drawback. That and the fact that it is heavier and a bit larger than my Canon flashes. Detracts from the reason for using mirrorless cameras in the first place, ie for a more compact package. Not sure I would buy this again...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feature set This flash has tremendous range and intelligence. Leave HSS on and shoot at whatever aperture you want. It gets it right nearly every time. It knows when you have the diffuser on and adjusts for it. I've never had a TTL flash with this precision before. The built in LED light is such a nice bonus and the luminosity of it is adjustable. Sony provides an orange filter for daylight look as well as an adapter for older Minolta style shoe. I tried to get it to overheat because of the bad reviews I had seen. Yes it will but it took 50 full power flashes to do it every ten seconds. That sounds reasonable to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The flagship flash for Sony A7 I ordered this as part of a kit with the A7. It has a very clever design, and decent customizability. Here are the things I didn't expect: 1) It doesn't include tungsten and florescent diffusers, as Nikons do. 2) It can't pivot perpendicular to the focal plane. This limits your options to bounce. 3) The diffuser doesn't fit in the main case, even if you left it on the flash, instead it comes with its own add-on case that can get a little awkward. Otherwise, it's effective on all fronts. I'm quite happy to no longer have to manually meter flash shots on my Sony.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No More Overheating. Now Top Drawer Flash Unit Expensive flash was on sale so I bought another! Now have 3. Overheating complaints are not found here. Must have the latest firmware update to eliminate that problem. I still don't like the multi function shoe as it limits use with other camera bodies. Works well with current series of Sony camera bodies. Very high output. Video lights are pretty useless unless you dropped your lighter on the floorboard of your car and need an impromtu flashlight to find it. Works nicely with Pocket Wizard transmitters. B&H experience was the best. They do understand the importance of good customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Over heats period Love my Sony cameras but the lighting system is limited, proprietary, and this one just is not built right. Read reviews on other sites the overheating issue is pervasive. It is embarrassing as a professional to have it stop working in the middle of a shoot. To make things worse after a year and a half of limited use it just blew up on me. That plus Sony customer service is difficult, confusing and frustrating.
