Canon 35mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture. It is ideal as an everyday lens and is very effective in low light conditions

The lens' ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), rear focusing system, and high-speed CPU--with optimized AF algorithms--ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocus action. Its circular eight-bladed diaphragm gives pleasing, soft background effects, and a Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element minimizes aberrations and contributes to higher image quality out to the edges of the frame.

Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch modes or change camera settings. Optical Image Stabilization (IS) gives up to 4 shutter speed stops of compensation against the blur caused by camera shake, providing clearer images when shooting in low light. A micro-stepping drive provides quieter operation and a low speed focus drive delivers optimal results when shooting video.

Optical Image Stabilization (IS)
Canon's optical Image Stabilization provides four stops of effective shutter speed compensation for camera shake, and can detect normal shooting or panning and automatically switch to the optimal IS mode. This means you can shoot in dimmer conditions, capturing images with shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
Glass Molded Aspherical Element (GMo)
A single Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element achieves high image quality with improved performance in the edges of the lens.
Rear Focusing & Ultrasonic Motor (USM)
A ring-type USM, high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms, and rear-focusing system combine to enable silent and fast autofocusing to help you focus right on the action.
Full-Time Manual Focus Override
With this lens, you have access to full-time manual focus for manual adjustment even while in AF mode.
Micro‐Stepping Drive Aperture
The construction of the aperture mechanism uses micro-stepping drive control for quieter operation during each shot.
Minimum Focusing Distance: 9.48"
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.48" (24 cm).
8x Circular Diaphragm Blades
With eight circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers very pleasant, soft bokeh background effects.

    Canon 35mm f/2.0 reviews

EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 193.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive performer I got this lens for Christmas. I use with my 6D (full frame). This is a impressive performer: sharp, nice bokeh and virtually no fringing under harshest conditions - even at f/2.0 (see photo1). The AF is very fast and the IS is a nice extra. The focusing ring works smoothly. The overall build quality is great. This is my new favorite lens. It's lightweight but somewhat bulky. Looks funny attached to my wife's 400D. Strongly recommended! P.S.: I didn't like the price of the lens hood, but I'm not happy with the quality of the 3rd party version I got instead: it doesn't lock tight in its place, which is a no-go for a tulip style lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding!!! I have owned several canon primes over the years but this lens does some magic to the image that no other lens did. It is not about one technical detail such as sharpness, contrast etc..the overall result has some magic to it in the way it captures light, the quality of bokeh etc. The swift AF, although slightly loud, makes it possible to not miss the right moment. My comparison is with EF 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 28mm 1.8, 24-105 f4 is, etc on canon 6d and sigma 30mm 1.4 on canon t3i. I highly recommend especially at this price point. This has been my go to lens for general purpose and travel on my 6d and I think I will be keeping it for a loooong time..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens! I recently started taking photography classes and initially started out buying the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (body only) and a 50 mm prime lens. After getting into the photography more, I needed another lens! When inside or in tight spaces, I needed a wider angle on the lens. So I finally was able to purchase this lens, getting the free shipping, plus the $$ rebate. I'm very pleased with this lens. The clarity has been great, and I love using it when taking pictures of families, as the 50 mm lens was difficult at times to get all of the family members into the shot. I'm also very happy with B&H Photo as well. Great customer service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Like This Lens! I have a 60D and some day would like to add a full-frame. I wanted a prime lens, something faster than the f/3.5 and f/4 zooms I have. I considered the 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Anyway after reading review after review I decided on the 35. This lens is great! On my crop sensor body it's very sharp at f2, in fact, seems to be sharp at all apertures. Even on a full frame, any of the issues it has are gone by f2.8. The IS works great as well. I have a very high keeper rate even at 1/6 sec. Auto focus is fast and accurate. My only grippe is a typical one for Canon. No hood included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back To The Start This lens is used on a Rebel T5i, a 60D, and most recently a 6D. When I was shooting film I almost always used prime lenses, but as I transitioned to digital I found zoom lenses convenient, reasonably priced, and allowed me to carry less gear. Now, I'm rediscovering prime lenses, and remembering how a fixed focal length made me think more creatively about framing, distance, and discretion. The f2 is plenty fast for my style of photography (family activities, street photography, city scapes), and I've had nothing but exceptionally sharp images. It's my close-to-50mm equivalent for the T5i, and 60D, which is probably my favorite all purpose focal length, and on the 6D it's providing contextual width to my street imagery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must have for crop sensors When I chose to buy a macro lense, I was hoping it could serve as a general walk around lens. Not really. At 60mm, it gives in reality 96mm of focal lenght. It works, but it's not ideal. I started looking between 35mm and 50mm, but I was afraid the 50mm would give results similar to my 60mm. The choice was pretty clear. 35mm is more expensive, but it's much more versatile on a crop sensor camera than 50mm. I don't really have the need (and money) for the L version, so 2.0 seemed like the best bet. It's a little big larger than what I was expecting, but I'm really pleased with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the perfect standard lens for my 5D I was looking for an IS lens that was near standard and fast so that I could use it for photos and video. The 35mm f2 IS is exactly what I hoped it would be. The IS smooths video very nicely, the 35mm on full frame is perfect for general use, the IQ appears to be excellent (no tests), and I've even been able to shoot 1:1 macro with extension tubes. Everything about this lens is consistent with the $500 price tag from feel to the metal mounts and it is the perfect balance on 5D. When the 50mm f2 IS comes out (assuming that is the plan) it is going to sell like hotcakes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Really Fine Lens At A Bargin Price I was reading reviews of the Canon 35mm f/1.4 when the reviewer compared this lens with the Canon 35mm f/2 IS. I decided to research further and decided to buy the 35mm f/2 IS and I'm very happy with that decision. The lens never fails to impress me and it's surprisingly good in low light conditions with my Canon 6D. I've never mounted it on any other camera. I like to travel light and this camera and lens together with my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 MKII fit nicely into a small easy to carry bag. One drawback is the high price of the Canon lens hood.
