Canon 35mm f/2.0 Overview

  • 1Description

A flexible wide-angle prime, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM from Canon pairs the versatile focal length with sophisticated autofocus capabilities as well as image stabilization. The bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. The optical design utilizes one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. Benefitting the optical assets is a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld images. Also, a ring-type USM realizes quick, quiet, and smooth autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Wide-angle 35mm f/2 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One glass-molded aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with a rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast and precise autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a micro-stepping drive also provides quiet focusing performance and a low-speed focus drive is used to benefit video recording applications.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Canon 35mm f/2.0 Reviews

EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 219.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from a great alternative I really like this lens's size, weight, fast f/2 and IS. Too many people want only f1.4 but most use these lenses steped down to f/2 any way because of depth of field. Especially in tight quarters like indoors. and for portraiture. with lens correction software like LightRoom distortion is not a issue. Neither is the strong vigneting at f/2 because of the post vignete tools in LightRoom. I love the color rendition or color out put from this lens, its just simple lovely. crisp and clean. I use this lens on my 5Dmk3 and Eos-M. Just test the lens for your self and you will see what I'm describing here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine Lens - Requires you to use your camera's Peri Picture quality and sharpness is much better than expected based on the MTF Chart. Suitable, at large aperture, for indoor photos of moving objects that require fast shutter times. Short minimum focal length, fast USM, and very effective IS make this an ideal "Grandkids" lens. Fine detail for outdoor/landscape photography. It is important that you use your camera's Peripheral Illumination Correction as otherwise you will see significant vignetting. This being a newer lens, you may have to first update your version of EOS Utility in order to register the lens' Peripheral Illumination Correction Data. Do buy the original Canon Lens Hood - some aftermarket products simply do not work well on this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive performer I got this lens for Christmas. I use with my 6D (full frame). This is a impressive performer: sharp, nice bokeh and virtually no fringing under harshest conditions - even at f/2.0 (see photo1). The AF is very fast and the IS is a nice extra. The focusing ring works smoothly. The overall build quality is great. This is my new favorite lens. It's lightweight but somewhat bulky. Looks funny attached to my wife's 400D. Strongly recommended! P.S.: I didn't like the price of the lens hood, but I'm not happy with the quality of the 3rd party version I got instead: it doesn't lock tight in its place, which is a no-go for a tulip style lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Features Since I am a professional photographer, I must be able to count on my lenses to produce excellent images under wide-ranging conditions. Outstanding optics, robust and durable build quality are givens for me. This particular lens, however, has a couple feature which make it the best 35mm available for my work. Having such a wide aperture (f/2.0) allows me to shoot many events without flash! That can be big to my clients. Also, having IS at this (kinda-wide) focal length gives me distinct advantages: (1) it plays into the non-flash event scenario. (2) it makes a wonderful lens for video. Additionally, I can get beautiful short DOF shots with this baby. It's almost like a little brother to my 85mm f/1.2. If you have a need for 35mm (who doesn't?), this one rocks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unmatched clarity and color This lens is simply amazing. The only advantage the L lenses have on this lens is the weather sealing and that's never been a problem. The auto focus is fast, the IS helps and it's a great lens for low light. Where this lens is amazing is the sharpness, clarity and the colors it produces. Colors just pop. I haven't noticed the vignetting others mention but, as they say, that's easily correctable. Images are sharp to the edges and I'm definitely going to start using this lens more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding!!! I have owned several canon primes over the years but this lens does some magic to the image that no other lens did. It is not about one technical detail such as sharpness, contrast etc..the overall result has some magic to it in the way it captures light, the quality of bokeh etc. The swift AF, although slightly loud, makes it possible to not miss the right moment. My comparison is with EF 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 28mm 1.8, 24-105 f4 is, etc on canon 6d and sigma 30mm 1.4 on canon t3i. I highly recommend especially at this price point. This has been my go to lens for general purpose and travel on my 6d and I think I will be keeping it for a loooong time..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens! I recently started taking photography classes and initially started out buying the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (body only) and a 50 mm prime lens. After getting into the photography more, I needed another lens! When inside or in tight spaces, I needed a wider angle on the lens. So I finally was able to purchase this lens, getting the free shipping, plus the $$ rebate. I'm very pleased with this lens. The clarity has been great, and I love using it when taking pictures of families, as the 50 mm lens was difficult at times to get all of the family members into the shot. I'm also very happy with B&H Photo as well. Great customer service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Like This Lens! I have a 60D and some day would like to add a full-frame. I wanted a prime lens, something faster than the f/3.5 and f/4 zooms I have. I considered the 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Anyway after reading review after review I decided on the 35. This lens is great! On my crop sensor body it's very sharp at f2, in fact, seems to be sharp at all apertures. Even on a full frame, any of the issues it has are gone by f2.8. The IS works great as well. I have a very high keeper rate even at 1/6 sec. Auto focus is fast and accurate. My only grippe is a typical one for Canon. No hood included.
