AJA ADA4 Reviews

does what it is supposed to in its niche task

For starters, this will operate on DC power, the chassis is small (about the size of a Lectro SR receiver), it arrives with a DB25 breakout cable (4 in / 4 out XLR) and the power supply. The unit operates at either 48kHz or 96kHz--no other sampling rates. If you are trying to deliver two to four AES signals, in or out of something, are working remotely and need DC power (it will operate on AC power via the supplied power supply as well) then the Aja ADA4 is your ticket. It will sync via Word Clock if you do not have sample rate conversion on your AES input destination. How does it compare to other converters? I am not sure. I have a bunch of different converters and the Aja ADA 4 happily runs along side them all and it sounds like it belongs in the signal chain to me. It is professional gear, for sure. If you are able to run a set up with rack mount gear, then this little box is probably not the correct choice... maybe look at Lynx, Apogee, Metric Halo or many others. But for niche remote location work, this is pretty much the best (maybe the only) realistic option. Please note the supplied break out DB25 cable is sort of bulky---if you plan to drop this into a sound bag or other compact travel set up, you will likely want to build yourself another cable. The DB25 cable otherwise works great apart from being bulky.

Great Product

question

I need to use 2 XLR's for balanced analog audio inputs and end up with one BNC outputing AES to go into a Blackmagicdesign ATEM. Does this unit actually put the digital audio AES signal out through the BNC or is it a Sync only?
Asked by: Jason B.
This is a Bi-Directional Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog Converter. You will be able to plug XLR audio in to this device and output it to the digital AES/EBU signal for the ATEM Television Studio to recognize.

question

What's in the box...it does not say: Supplied Breakout CableThe included breakout cable provides the audio connections for ADA4, allowing 8 channels of AES audio input and output while keeping the overall size of the Mini-Converter compact and portable. AJA's site claims that the cables are in the box?! Please confirm.
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, it comes with the breakout cable - a giant multi-pin connector which is on the side of the box you can't see (where 'AUDIO I/O >' is pointing) which breaks out into a bunch of XLR connectors. A drawing of the cable can be seen on AJA's site. What these DIDN'T used to come with were the power adapters, you had to buy one separately! But AJA finally wised up and changed that a couple years ago.

question

Will this work to convert 4 channels (2 stereo) AES to 4 channels analogue audio? I want to use the XLR Input 1 & 2 to bring in AES 1/2 & 3/4 and then the 4 XLR outputs to output those 4 channels as analogue audio.
Asked by: Jared R.
Yes, it should have no trouble doing that. It is bi-directional so it can be AES to analog or analog to AES.
