Ikelite 6242.11 overview

  • 1Description

Capture beautiful photos and Full HD 1080p video of coral, parrot fish, and other sea life with your Canon PowerShot S110 digital camera in Ikelite's dedicated Underwater Housing. Built for durability, it features a depth rating of 200' and is crafted from corrosion-resistant polycarbonate, which is clear to allow for visual inspection and monitoring of the camera and O-ring seal.

The camera's built-in flash is usable but its range, coverage, power, and color-correcting capabilities are limited, and it's also likely to cause backscatter, so it's highly recommended that you use an external strobe like Ikelite's AF35. This type of optional flash can be triggered as a wireless slave by the camera's built-in unit. The housing includes a diffuser to soften the light of the camera's flash, as well as a deflector to redirect this light towards an external strobe. Choose the AF35 for easy automatic exposure, or add an Ikelite DS Substrobe via the optional EV Manual Controller to benefit from greater power and wider coverage.

Mechanical controls on the housing, including push-buttons, knurled knobs/dials, and a lever, provide access to all camera functions except for the rear control dial. Expand your coverage or enable extreme close-up shots by attaching optional, external, 67mm threaded wide-angle and macro lenses to the built-in, flat glass port. When you're not shooting with a strobe, you can also attach optional, external color-correction filters for blue or green water, in order to restore hues that get absorbed beneath the surface.

Construction Details
  • Depth rating of 200'
  • Made by hand in the USA from durable, corrosion-resistant polycarbonate, which is clear to allow you to keep an eye on the camera and O-ring seal
  • Drop-in camera loading makes setup a breeze
  • Simply close the latch on the side and watch the O-ring form a solid, black, watertight seal
  • Buoyancy is nearly neutral in freshwater
Controls and Handling
  • Large, ergonomic mechanical controls, including push-buttons, knurled knobs/dials, and a lever, afford access to all camera functions except for the rear control dial
  • Two 12-24 threaded mounts on the bottom of the housing allow for the secure attachment of optional trays and grips, which improve balance and handling while providing attachment points for lighting arms
Lens Port
  • Built-in, flat glass lens port with 3.0" diameter
  • Accepts optional, external, 67mm threaded wide-angle and macro "wet" lenses
  • Wide-angle option increases your angle of coverage, allowing you to get close to your subject while fitting more in the frame
  • Macro lens enables extreme close-ups with great clarity and detail, so you can fill the whole frame with a tiny sea creature
  • Both types of accessory conversion lenses cut down on distortion caused by the water, resulting in better image quality
  • Ikelite WD-3 Wide-Angle Dome provides mid-range coverage with no vignetting
  • Ikelite W-30, INON UWL-H100, and other 67mm wide-angle options offer wider coverage, but not without a little vignetting and edge distortion
  • By using a smaller aperture, zooming in slightly, and/or cropping in post-production, vignetting and distortion can be reduced or eliminated
  • Available macro lenses include those from INON, Epoque, and other brands
  • When not using an external strobe, attach an optional, external color-correction filter for blue or green water to your port, in order to restore hues that are absorbed beneath the surface
  • Ikelite filters #6441.41 and #6441.81 are available for tropical blue and green water, respectively
  • 3.0" filters can be pressed directly onto the port; larger 3.6" size may be required when fitting filters onto wide-angle wet lenses
Strobe Connection and Operation
  • Camera's built-in flash is usable, but its range, coverage, power, and color-correcting capabilities are limited and it's likely to cause backscatter
  • Use of an Ikelite AF35 or other external flash is highly recommended, in order to ensure sufficient illumination, coverage, and color correction
  • AF35 is an automatic optical slave strobe with exposure adjustment capabilities
  • Adding an Ikelite DS Substrobe via the optional EV Manual Controller will give you greater power and wider coverage
  • External strobes are triggered by the firing of the camera's built-in flash
  • Supplied diffuser softens the light of the camera's flash to prevent backscatter, glare, and hard shadows
  • Included deflector redirects the light of the built-in flash towards an external strobe for more effective and reliable triggering

Underwater Housing for Canon PowerShot S110 is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome combination! I initially wanted to buy a Panasonic DMC-TS25 plus the housing to benefit from the underwater camera capacity without the housing in shallow depths. But I'm glad I opted for the Canon S110 because of the camera's manual options and RAW saving. Very easy to configure even underwater when familiarised with the camera menus. Build-in flash already produces great results. Brilliant set!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Button issue Overall looks are what I expected for the price. However, I had to return the housing because the REC button did not line up with the camera. The housing button shaft and pad was positioned over the top of the camera REC button and would not engage. All other controls worked well. I really need to use the camera video so this housing did not work for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat disappointed The Canon S110 is an awesome little camera. Very disappointed that the mechanical controls on the housing do not match up very well with the function controls on the camera. It was hit and miss, especially with the macro function. The method for the zoom control is also very difficult to control, but worked. I was glad the housing was labeled for the correct screws to mount to a tray since they were not the same as the screws that came with the tray. I had to find SS screws to mount the housing and have not found nice allen wrench screws like the screws that came with the tray. I've had better experiences with less expensive housings. The water tight seals are very nice though and the camera fit into the housing nicely. Finally, the camera and strobe work well togehter without the housing, but the strobe will not fire consistently when the camera is in the housing and there are no ports for a cable. I will have to use a fiber optic adaptor to link the camera and strobe, but I accept that I did not research this as well as I should have.
