The Schneider 4 x 5.65" Hollywood Black Magic 1/2 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles. This can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject while highlight as well as mid-tone contrast is softened and glare is reduced. Additionally, a glowing effect around highlights is created which can further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect while overall sharpness is maintained.

This filter has a grade of 1/2. Grades of 1/8, 1/4, 1, and 2 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.

    4 x 5.65" Hollywood Black Magic 1/2 Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great way to take the edge off of digital. I've got the 1/8th strength and 1/4th strength of this filter as well. Oh film, I never liked using diffusion, but with digital, it's all so perfect and cold...these help. If I'm not using vintage glass, if I'm shooting digital, I just leave the 1/8th strength on all the time, for wide and long lenses and soft or contrasty lighting. I finally bought the 1/4th and 1/2 for when I need more. I got the 1/2 specifically for a particular film with a lead lady who's getting on in years so I figured I'd go a little bit stronger than I normally do (only on close ups---strong diffusion makes wide shots look too soft to me and it looks obvious you're using filters at that point.) The rental house I usually use up here does not rent them singly, but in a whole set of 1/8th, 1/4th, 1/2, 1 (full), and 2 (double). I think it's sort of ridiculous because I would never use the 1 or 2 unless I was shooting a 1970's era Abba video. The 1 and 2 are extremely strong. The 1/2 hits my limit. I did something with the 1/2 and the 1/8th doubled up once (a 5/8ths)...and that was good for a black and white music video to look bloom-y and stylized. The filters look stronger with contrasty lighting. I've used soft FX and the black Pro Mists and I just find I like these the best...but that may just be because I know them the best, so I can better guess what each strength is going to do without experimenting...I rarely have time in the low budget world I DP in to think about each filter too much---especially considering that the lighting and focal length both factor into how the filter will behave. I know this one best and I stick with it.
