Varavon SLING-FF-B Reviews

SLING Follow Focus (Black) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product I'm looking to minimize the amount I'm touching the lense of my DSLR when I'm shooting video. In reviewing my options, I found a lot of jar openers that would work as well (though with heavily mixed reviews). I decided to get two of these, one for zoom and one for focus. The handle on the zoom works quite well, but the narrow width of the Canon EF style focus rings made it quite difficult to get the band to grip it and not fall off the lense in the middle of adjusting focus. I think that adding one additional hole on the silicone band will fix the issues I'm having and won't impair its function with other wider lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, inexpensive gadget Does just what it says. Makes manual focusing easier and smoother. It gives the right amount of leverage without being cumbersome. If you shoot a lot of video with a DSLR it would be worth it to have 2 of these; one for focus and the other for zoom. This product may not be suited for some smaller lenses where the manual focus ring is small and on the end of the lens. This product needs at least a half inch thick focus ring to clamp onto, but if your favorite video lens has this, you won't be disappointed with this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It kinda broke..... It seemed great when I took it out of the package, but there was not a hole short enough to fit around some of my lenses (a pentax-m 50mm f1.4, and Pentax-a 28mm f2.8) so I truest burning a new hole into the rubber or whatever material it is, and when that didn't work, I tried cutting it, but as I was afraid of, the band is made of that kind of rubber that when there is even the tinest hole or cut, it'll just keep on ripping until it rips in two. This happened to me. But after many different attempts to mend it (no type of glue will stick, and no heat will melt it) I just used a rubber band to hold it together and it actually works pretty well. Better than the orignal as I can get a tighter fit. But all this can be avoided if your lenses aren't too big. If your lens has a filter of 52mm or greater, then you should be fine. If your lens is 49mm or less, it probably will not fit very well. So your leica, micro four thirds, and older film lenses probably will not fit this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sling follow focus I was hoping I could use this with my cine lenses for the aperture since a second follow focus won't fit behind the other one for focus, but there's nothing to keep it from slipping off the narrow face of the gear. It works OK with a lens that has a wide focus or zoom ring, although it tends to slip a bit if the little teeth are not a close match to the knurl on the lens ring. The elastic strap could have a little less elasticity, too. It doesn't hold the unit very securely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Saver This is an excellent little focus assist device. It's so small that you can throw it in your camera bag or pocket and take it with you on any shoot. It definitely doesn't replace the need for an actual professional follow focus, but it is very helpful. This little guy saved me on a recent live shoot that I was using a Sony FS100 on. If you know that camera, you know that the stock lens doesn't have any sort of a rocker switch attached to it, so all of your zooming is manual right on the lens, which results in really jerky zooms. The focus ring on the lens is also very stiff and the follow focus didn't have enough drive to turn it, so I ended up using this. With a little practice, I was nailing most zooms.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great idea but not for every lens So I bought this as a last option since I have been unable to find a cheap follow focus choice for my MFT SLRMagic Prime. This looked like a really good idea. The handle has teeth on the end to grip into the grooves of a lens barrel. The rubber strap goes around the lens with a string feeling rubber. The handle feels a little cheap. The price isn't so justified. I think it only costs this much, because there isn't an alternative to this style of follow focus. Anyway, I'll get to the point if it worked or not. As designed, no. You need a lens with a wider barrel. If I had to guess, the lens barrel would need to be about 1 1/2 to 2. My SLR Prime has a barrel diameter of about 1. But what I did to sort of get it to work was to wrap the strap around twice and double loop it. It initially misses but for a minor brief moment, so it's still functional. I don't recommend this as an option for small lenses. I'm just making this work because it's better than actually buying a real follow focus. I will say that this tool could be used on many lenses so it sort of has an extra value when you have the right size lens for it. I recommend this tool for Nikon, Canon, and other larger lens sizes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple tools frequently work best! As an amature nature photographer I've had trouble in the past getting the focus exactly right. No more! This little device is so simple to use that I wonder why I never thought of building one myself. It fits all of my lens perfectly and worth every penny of the purchase price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for the money Simple and lightweight these follow focus rings work fine on both big and small diameter lenses. That said, make sure you secure them tightly to the lens so as to eliminate any play or twist when using. Ideal for both focus and aperture pulls.
