Celestron StarSense overview

  • 1Description

The StarSense AutoAlign Telescope Alignment System from Celestron uses its built-in camera to take a series of images of the night sky overhead, automatically searches its database to identify the stars in the images, and matches them to its database of over 40,000 objects. Once a match is confirmed, the system calculates the coordinates of the center of the captured image and determines exactly where the telescope is pointed. The included hand controller replaces the NexStar controller that originally came with your scope. The StarSense alignment system can be used in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

    Celestron StarSense reviews

StarSense AutoAlign Telescope Alignment System is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from StarSense, senseless! Set up and tried to get an alignment. I did get one but the Go- To went in erratic directions. Manual is not accurate and doesn't give correct instructions as the hand controller did not give setup as described in annual. The hand control was difficult to read especially when messages were scrolling, no control of speed. I spent 5 good clear nights of my week at CherrySprings State Park trying to get it to work. When I reverted to my original hand controller, which never gave any problems aligning I could not get it to work. I suspect the StarSense firmware corrupted my motor control firmware. More problems than room to discuss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! The StarSense AutoAlign is a truly outstanding product. The first night out I saw more objects than I did in my previous three observing sessions. The camera automatically slews to different parts of the sky to build it's internal model and then says ready. I punched in M13 and the telescope slewed to M13 and it was in the eyepiece. Then I punched in Veil Nebula which is quite far from M13 and it slewed all of the way across the sky and there was the veil nebular right in the eyepiece. Every object I called up my telescope would slew right to it and it was in teh eyepiece all night long without fail. Great job Celestron!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well so far! I have the StarSense attached to my CPC 800. Attaching it to the telescope was straight forward using the bracket that comes with the unit. One little detail was that the screw that was on the scope was not long enough to secure the bracket, a longer one was required. Setup and alignment was fairly straight forward and by the second night I had it calibrated well enough to use the GoTo using a 17mm eyepiece with the object landing right in the centre each time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally really enjoying my telescope. I just got mine this week (September 2014) and I am glad I waited for the software and hardware issues to be fixed. The fist thing I did before trying to use it was connect it to my computer and update the software/firmware on the controller and camera. I develop internet software and apps and have for over 20 years. It is almost impossible to test every combination of hardware and versions of software to everyone's satisfaction. Unfortunate but true. So the best we hope for with our customers is to be responsive when bugs are discovered and provide fixes when we know the problems are solved. I can't speak for Celestron's internal approach but on the customer facing side they have always been responsive. I will say this - after two long viewing sessions with the system, I have had the best tracking and performance from my mount than I have over the past 3 years. I have a CGEM mount that I hyper-tuned and an 8 Edge HD OTA. My setup times are significantly reduced with this setup and everything I have asked to view was right in the field of view right away. I use a DSLR on the back of the scope without an eyepiece so having accurate first time go to is important. It works great - just update to the latest firmware when you get it. I live in NW Ohio and we don't get many clear nights so quick setup time is critical - especially when it is extremely cold - I control everything from inside the house once everything is setup outside so the less time I spend outside in the cold is plus. So far so good. Looking forward to many more nights of use. I also added the Celestron SkySync GPS unit and this added even more accuracy. Very pleased. In the pros and cons I list Requires updates in both areas. It is unfortunate that it requires them but it adds flexibility and growth to the product in the future. So it is a blessing and a curse - true of almost everything with a computer in this day and age.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick autoalign 1 2 3 This is a must have for your scope.... first attempt it worked with my Celestron Nextstar 8 SE and even the weather was partly cloudy, this Starsense worked flawlessly... it took 3 minutes to complete alignment. The object was in view through my scope. You ll never regret to have the starsense. Lets it does the alignment, and spend more time enjoying observation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Opened new worlds to this user! I have owned my Celestron Nexstar 8 SE for over five years. During that time I rarely manually aligned the scope each night I used it. Instead I'd just point to the planet I wanted to see utilizing my iPhone or star charts to guide me. I knew that my telescope was capable of more, but figured that there would be an app on the iPhone that would help with auto-alignment at some point. While not an app, the StarSense Telescope Alignment Accessory was the next best thing. It was easy to set-up and only takes three minutes to automatically align. Now instead of just showing off Saturn and Jupiter to the neighborhood, I can show them star clusters, galaxies and the smaller planets that were too difficult to locate without alignment. It is a fantastic purchase and I would recommend it to anyone hoping to squeeze extra performance out of their existing Celestron telescope. It has certainly opened some new worlds to me and I plan on using the telescope more frequently as a result.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from screw problems I ordered the StarSense Celestron for use with my NexStar5SE telescope.According to the manual I would have to use the Large Mounting bracket. Problem was the screws for my viewfinder were to short to support the bracket. After some discussion with Celestron support they send me replacemnet screws, initially wrong ones, several weeks later the correct ones. When using for the first time the manual said that you will be asked to enter your country and city. This never happened because there already is a country/city in the DB. You will have to change this with the TIME AND LOCATION menu option. There is also an error in the Calibrate Center procedure. After point 3 you will need to do an ALIGN.After correcting these problems, the system seems to be working OK. More testing needs to be done to determine its accuracy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from StarSense and a CGEM mount is the best I am now enjoying my telescope thanks to the recent purchase of the StarSense and a CGEM mount. I was ready to give up as I don't know the sky and it was not any fun to have an 11 scope just sitting unused. For the past two weekends I have used the StarSense and after some hiccups setting it up, it works very good. Last night at our public night in Bellville Ohio at the Warren Rupp Observatory wro.org the sky was not clear so the scope was still on the moving castors so a polar alignment was not completed. I did a auto alignment and chose the Ring Nebula to slew to. It was within the eyepiece, it worked well enough to look at a few things and allow the visitors to see something. Thanks Celestron and B&H Photo for the fun the past two weekends.
