Bower SFD728 overview

  • 1Description

The Bower SFD728 Autofocus TTL Flash is a dedicated shoe-mount flash with TTL exposure metering capabilities for Olympus/Panasonic cameras. The flash features a guide number of 92' at ISO 100 and a TTL range of 45.9' for automatic control of the flash output. The four-position zoom head covers a focal length range between 28mm and 85mm and a 0-90° bounce and 330° swivel design enables extensive head positioning capabilities.

An infrared AF assist beam is integrated into the flash's design to promote faster focusing in low-light conditions and an intelligent auto-check light is also available to confirm if the subject is within TTL range. Red-eye reduction and second/rear-curtain sync modes are also available when used with supported cameras.

Full TTL dedication available for Olympus/Panasonic cameras.
Four-position zoom head covers focal lengths between 28mm and 85mm.
Bounce adjustment of 0-90° and a horizontal swivel of up to 330° enable a wide variety of flash head movements.
An AF assist beam, up to 26', aids in focusing during low-light situations.
Flash duration is 1/700 sec. at full power.
5600K color temperature helps to balance flash output with other daylight-balanced light sources.

    Bower SFD728 reviews

SFD728 Autofocus TTL Flash for Olympus/Panasonic Cameras is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good inexpensive flash for bounce flash I wanted a flash that could tilt and swivel for bounce flash for my Panasonic LX7. The flash is bigger than the camera, but it's light weight so it balances OK. Any other flash that can tilt and swivel would be as big and maybe heavier. The flash works very well. Exposures are good and consistant. My one complaint is that the first one I got died after one or two flashes. B&H replaced it without a problem, and the new one works perfectly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Limited features (no controls, no manual modes) I thought the rear panel looked like it had the usual screen and buttons but it's just an on/off switch there. So we are missing the usual controls like a pilot button, flash power for manual modes, channel setting for slave trigger. This is an inexpensive unit so we can't really expect all these features, but we are also missing out on a lot of basic features that even an amateur like myself likes to use

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't get it to work right Have not really had an opportunity to use as I can't get it to work correctly, it seems. Sometimes it flashes, sometimes it doesn't, and that's trying it in very low light. Sometimes It won't even let the picture take unless I release the shutter and try again. Also, on some of the shots the infrared focusing light is so bright it shows up in the picture! I would think I also should be able to use the camera's flash settings to adjust how the flash works, but no, I get the 'not available in these settings' error, I assume because the internal flash is not popped up. I've gone to the menu to see if I am supposed to change from the internal to the external flash, but the settings only show internal/external but nothing to change. I have a call into the manufacturer's help line, but no answer so far except to say that they have not found and answer yet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have used less than 10 times and try to use it again does I gave this flash a friend, I have used less than 10 times and try to use it again does not work. The flash has less than a year so it is supposed to guarantee. I have contacted BH have sent me to a website to make the claim, but after more than 10 days I have had no response , he has not had coups has always been stored without batteries , so not recommend

Rated 2 out of 5 by from disappointed I bought the product about a year and half ago. I like options , pivoting all around, and worked nicely with my Lumix DMC FZ50 for a reasonable price. I used it for about 3 times only. Today it is not working , as I placed new batteries and the condition of batteries' chamber is pristine, yet only the red light is on and never flash on testing!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only partly compatible with Panasonic GF2 This is a mixed bag with my Panasonic GF2. With the camera in Intelligent Auto (iA) mode it works fairly well both direct or bounce and that perhaps justifies the bargain price. But, with the camera in nearly any other mode including Program and regular Auto, it's prone to hugely over-exposing most shots. I can't find any in-camera menus to control the flash beyond the usual on/off/red-eye choices. It also doesn't seem to have any focus assist with the GF2 (the GF2's on-camera focus assist lamp still does all the work in low light). Otherwise it's a decent simple flash with just an on/off switch, the head is easy to tilt and swivel, and it's fairly lightweight for its size (a good thing with a small camera like the GF2). It's quiet and powers up and recycles fairly quickly with quality NiMh batteries. It has ample light output for most situations. It may work better with other Panasonic and Olympus models but the compatibility with the GF2 is limited to just one mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great TTL Flash for Olympus This flash unit is being used with an Olympus DSLR E-500, and works very well. Upon receipt, this flash was given to my teenage granddaughter, who attached the SFD728 directly to her DSLR, and immediately began shooting flash pictures. There was no learning curve for her camera addition, and she is uite pleased.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Seems like it is worth what you pay for it BUT.... It does not operate with my Olympus OMD EM10 ii as I thought it would. As a result I can't provide a full review. It would have helped to have some form of compatibility table on the B+H Photo site.
