Akai Professional MPX8 Reviews

Mostly Decent Simple Sample Player

The Akai MPX8SD is a very useful sample player for live performance. I never was drawn to using it in the studio but if you wanted to load samples and record a performance live with the pads that might be cool. My use for the MPX8SD was playing back looping vocal snippets, playing them rhythmically in time with my sequencers and drum machine for my live set. I was streaming my sets on Twitch and got positive feedback explicitly for the use of the MPX8SD. Playback of samples is basic and I opted to set my pad triggering to the latching mode. This way I could hit a pad on the downbeat and it would sustain, USUALLY looping in time, until I hit the pad again. I say usually looping in time because occasionally the samples would be altered and the sample lengths would get wonky. This happened infrequently. The pads can also be set to gate or just trigger. So all bases are covered. At least once I triggered the samples from an external MIDI device and some of the successive MIDI notes were ignored. For my uses, I actually enjoyed this because it gave an uncertain element of probability to the sample playback, which I found very pleasing. For the money performance sample playback has never been easier.

A good no frills sample player.

I bought this sample player to help create some new musical ideas in real time. Its easy to use and has a few useful built in features. You must run the latest firmware patch right out of the box if you want to run stereo samples (v1.0). I really like the twin 1/4 outputs, they could have cheaped out with one single stereo jack but having two physical output jacks makes this unit really flexible when your loading dual-mono .WAV fales (left one sample, right a different sample). This allows you to load twice as many samples at the same time. There is a strict 30 MB memory limit on samples loaded into the unit's memory but you can use SD cards to store your sample banks/kits (up to 32 gb). The kit editor software looks completely thrown together at the last second. if you want to build sample sets or kits you will need to use the software. I could not figure out how to build or save my kits within the hardware itself... maybe I am missing something, but I could not get it to work. I hope the next firmware update will correct this. I can't comment on the MIDI capabilities because I am not familiar enough with MIDI protocols to make an assessment. Its a LOT of bang for the buck. Useful for popping off sound bytes or musical intros during live performances. Well suited for... -Live musical performance -Recording Studio -talk radio or news program -Game show -Theater

The Akai website says "mono or stereo samples via standard SD card". But in the User Guide says the sample files must be mono?
Asked by: Eric
According to the manufacturer(and user reviews posted online), there was a firmware update issued that enables use of stereo samples via SD card on the Akai Professional MPX8 SD Sample Pad Controller.
