These holders are designed for the Plustek OpticFilm scanners. My guess is that they will put the film plane out of focus on the Canon 9000 flatbed scanner.

Can these be used for DSLR scanning? Do they have a flat side where the negatives and slides would be parallel to the sensor plane?
I use them for just that, copying slides and negatives. For slides they are held just as flat as the slide mount will allow. I find it a little fiddly to get negatives in to the holder, but the holder does a good job of holding them flat. I feel that both sides are parallel. I do not use them with a scanner but with a DIY holder on a light table. For the price it is a very good deal. Happy scanning.

How are slides held in place? In the photo it appears that there are spring loaded covers, one per slide but I can't really tell.
There is a spring loaded slot that retains two opposing edges of each slide. You gently push one edge of the slide into the spring loaded slot from the opposing edge, then push down on the free edge while allowing the spring to push the free edge of the slide under two retaining clips. You remove the slide from the holder by re-compressing the spring from the edge under the retaining clips then pulling that edge away from the mount It is quite easy to do and very secure. It works for cardboard mounts and most plastic mounts. Some mounts with cover glass are too thick to slide into the slot.
