Rode VideoMic overview

  • 1Description

The Rode VideoMic & Micro Boompole Kit with Custom Windbuster from B&H includes everything you'll need to capture audio from overhead.

The VideoMic is a shotgun microphone with an integrated Rycote Lyre Suspension System that can easily be mounted on a boompole or DSLR camera. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.

The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticated suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticated suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

The Micro Boompole is a convenient and portable, 3-piece boom pole. Lightweight and precision balanced, the anodized aluminum pole features intuitive twist locks for smooth extension. With the included 10' Rode VideoMic Cable connected to the VideoMic's 1/8" male output and coiled down the boompole, you'll be able to easily connect to your favorite field recorder.

The Auray Custom Windbuster is made of an artificial fur material for maximum protection against wind noise. The Fuzzy Windbuster slips over windscreens for added protection.

  • Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System

The VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System from Rode is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a DSLR camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounted on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode's boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its supercardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides.

An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9V battery (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

    Barrel-Canceling Pickup
The Rode Video Mic functions as a true line+gradient microphone with a supercardioid pattern in the front and a barrel that cancels side audio. The result is maximum pickup of the source in highly ambient and noisy environments.
Selectable 10 or 20 dB Pad
When capturing audio in loud environments, the VideoMic offers built-in attenuation. The selectable 10 or 20 dB pad lessens the microphone's sensitivity, allowing it to handle higher SPL levels without sacrificing clarity.
    High-Pass Filter Switch
A high-pass filter switch eliminates room ambiance and noise below 80 Hz. This results in improved intelligibility while recording around machinery, wind or close proximities.
    Internal Power
The condenser element is powered with a standard 9V battery for up to 100 hours (approximately).

This Rode Mini Phone VideoMic Cable is a 10' long extension cable that can be used to position the VideoMic up to 10' away from the video camera. For the most of its length this cable is straight, but also features a short coiled section on the side of the mic connection.

  • Auray WSW-007MKII Custom Windbuster for Shotgun Microphones- 7" (18cm)

The Auray WSW Series Custom Windbusters provide dual layered wind protection and are designed to substantially reduce unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with minimal high frequency loss.

This WSW-007MKII Custom Windbuster fits shotgun mics up to 7"(18cm) in length and is designed to be slipped over existing foam windscreens up to 5cm in thickness. The simulated fur outer layer works in tandem with the acoustic cloth inner lining to protect the microphone element from air bursts without muffling the sound.

When used on a shotgun mic, this windbuster is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light breeze to moderate breeze conditions (4-17 mph) and users can generally expect a 30dB to 40dB reduction in wind noise with modest dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the modest high frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the substantial wind noise reduction. In addition to dual layered wind protection, the WSW-007MKII helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone.

The WSW-007MKII Custom Windbuster for Shotgun Microphones offers an extremely effective dual layered solution for wind protection.

Rode VideoMic reviews

VideoMic & Micro Boompole Kit with Custom Windbuster is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this mic I've had this microphone for about 6 months after purchasing it from B&H and I love it. I'm a new student studying Digital Cinematography online with Full Sail University and have been using this mic to record audio for my videos. The only issue I have is with the wind buster. After filming on a windy day I found that wind buster had completely blocked all sound and I ended up with wasted footage. The microphone itself is great for beginners like myself and the boom pole does its job. I definitely recommend this for people on a budget. If you need assistance with the mic there are plenty of videos online that will help you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound for small/medium projects I knew Rode made some good mic but was a little unsure about this kit. I went ahead and purchased it and by far blew my thoughts away. sound was perfect and I didn't even use the extra wind screen. No background noise at all was heard and we were in a open area with people running, biking, and walking around. The boom pole was lightweight and was easily handled above or below the subjects. I added some Velcro tights to hold the cable in place but it had enough length to plug into my DSLR. If you do any small or medium type of DSLR projects I would definitely recommend this kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected When reviewing different mics in this price range, we liked this one, but had some concerns about the indoor interview quality. But so far that's been perfect! The controls are easy to work with, it sets up easily and the sound quality has been great. We recently recorded a conference and we've had to do very little post editing compared to others in this category. The only complaint is the cable length when connecting to our camcorder. But that's more about where the input is located on our camcorder than about the mic itself. In my opinion, it's the best option for the price. And I'm so glad we purchased from an authorized dealer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shotgun mic Great overall affordable shotgun mic. So far I've been using it on a stand near the person talking for video--great audio and in using the high pass filter it really cleans up the noise. I have a preAmp but haven't needed it as the high pass filter does it's job. I attached mic to hot shoe adapter I had for light stand. I'm using this mic with a Lumix GH4 camera for 4K video. Nice to have the added boom pole and wind sock as part of the package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool kit On a whim I decided to get this kit instead of just the mic. All of the items are of very good quality. The VideoMic is INTENSELY better than the built in mic on my D3200 and MUCH better than the on in my HV20. It isn't QUITE as directional as I'd hoped, but it is very, very good. The boom pole is a great option, and the windbuster is pretty necessary if you're going to be in anything worse than a light breeze. In all: Great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Kit for DSLR shooter I was looking for a value deal, and found this. This shotgun mic has very good audio quality. It attaches right to your shoe, and the boom when needing to do interviews or regular movie shooting. The cable is smaller and might be the one thing that might need upgrading, but it works for now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Bundle for Starting Filmmakers Shooting my first short I immediately realized how awful my on-camera mic is. I picked this bundle because of Rode's reputation and the great price. It worked like a charm! The audio captured is leagues better and that without me having much experience in audio capture. I expect it to get better with each bit I learn. I would recommend this mic and bundle to any student or someone new to video production as the learning curve is low, the price is great and the results are outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Works great! I tend to film in a windy environments. This set up works great to cut out the wind while picking up the audio I do want.
