Lowel GL-1 overview

  • 1Description

The Lowel GL-1 Power LED is a compact handheld light source that is ideal for any type of event or location photography that demands portability, flexibility and ease of use. The GL-1's ergonomic appeal is readily apparent, from the rubberized exterior to the lockable trigger that enables dimming from 5.0-100%. The removable, rechargeable battery is located at the base for precise balance and its flat underside and low-profile feet allow placement on a table or other flat surface. There's also a 1/4"-20 threaded socket for tripod mounting.

The GL-1's flexible qualities begin with the focusing head with a 5:1 spot-to-flood ratio that allows you to back light or hair light your subject or pull back to add some fill light when needed to open up the shadows. The trigger-controlled dimming and a thumb-operated light intensity dial allows 1 hand operation for multi-tasking scenarios. The GL-1 comes with the light head, battery, multi-voltage charger and AC adapter. Its 3,000K output can be cooled to 5,300K for use in daylight with the purchase of an optional filter that mounts to the GL-1's 82 mm front screw thread.

Focusing Head
The GL-1's 8:1 focusing range lets you zero in to highlight your subject with a tight spot or pull back to wide flood and add fill light to a larger area
2 Ways to Dim
Use the adjustable Dimming Trigger to quickly get the perfect light level for short term handheld use or lock the light in the ON position and dial in an intensity for longer term constant output at any level

    Lowel GL-1 reviews

GL-1 Power LED is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 56.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from STILL NOT SURE Bought this reallllly expensive flash light for weddings. Firstly, if it's not dawn or dusk, don't bother using out doors, just not strong enough. The daylight balance filter steals quite a bit of output power as well. I like using the GL-1 for getting ready shots, toss a highlights into a portrait, and pretty legit for large venue receptions and table shots. The design, ergonomics, and hands-on usability are great, but the build quality is shat. My battery case/cover thing broke the 1st 3minutes of the first day on duty, had to do the rubber-band repair. I'm still not sure if it's worth the money. I'm using this much less than I expected and I could definitely do without.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Battery will not come out The battery will not come out and it cannot be charged inside the unit. My husband has been a welder for over 20yr but he couldn't remove it even after using clamps, pliers and unscrewing half of it. I tried it once before it went dead and became useless. It is nice with good white balancing, very dim with a daylight conversion filter, doesn't blend well with ice lights, studio lights or flash without the filter. BTW it says it's a 82mm bayonet mount filter but it's a screw mount. I planned on keeping it until the battery issues. Now I am undecided.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from easy to use and versatile I've only had the opportunity to take a few pops using the gl1 so far, but I have had the chance to play with it, a light meter, and a reflector and was able to place and throw light quite effectively. I wouldn't have minded a few more lumens, and find the light quality to be a tad harsh and improved by diffusion. In fact I'm looking at diffusion lens filters for it now; its a tad tricky, and one instance where extra lumens would come in handy. Too much diffusion cuts light output noticeably. All said, its a game changer, it delivers on advertising claims but could still be better. Glad I got it, can't wait for next version.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bulky and needs an assistant I saw this product at the WPPI and found it to be really interesting and portable for constant lighting so I decided to buy it. The main use would be for side or backlight setup. The LED K value is accurate and it accepts 82mm filters with some other attachments you can buy (i.e. barn doors). You can use it with battery or direct AC adapter which is included. Charge time is 2-3 hours for full battery which is great and you can charge the battery externally so you can use a spare battery while the secondary is charging. Cons: - heavy - Need an assistant or sturdy tripod - Battery compartment seems really flimsy - loud fan noise

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor build quality I bought this after seeing it at WPPI. I've used it only a handful of times and this is my experience. The trigger button and lock mechanism is made of cheap plastic and subsequently broke. It doesn't lock at any illumination level. In order to keep the light on, it has to have constant pressure on the trigger. The battery doesn't hold the charge for very long and in one case, it didn't charge at all. Overall, for the price, it is made very cheaply. I would suggest skipping on purchasing this item or you will probably regret it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it I got this light for the handful of weddings my studio does a year. I used it at one wedding and the battery wouldn't charge. Tiffen's Customer Service was horrible. It took two months for replacements (they sent out a battery with no charger as it was backordered.) When I finally got them both months later they again DID NOT WORK. So frustrating. I wanted to just return it but BH sent me another when I shipped mine back directly to them. I got it (thankfully to BH's excellent customer service!!) in time for my final wedding this weekend. It worked fine but when I got home and tried to remove it from the light base to charge, the plastic broke off. What a horribly overpriced and poorly made product. I wish I never got it in the first place as I additionally wasted money on a hood and a white balance filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pricey It is a great light but somewhat more limited than I expected. Not bright quite bright enough to use in brighter situations and dimming feature isn't quite dim enough at the lowest setting. It is also HUGE and won't fit easily into my large camera case without removing other essential gear. It is built really nice except the trigger and dimmer are made of cheap plastic. Didn't expect that in a $ flashlight. It does work great when the ambient light is a certain brightness and the zoom feature does come in handy!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Idea but really poor construction The idea is truly innovative and the light is nice. However, when you hold this item it feels cheap. The plastic structure does not feel sturdy and the plastic controls feel loose and sloppy instead of responsive. You can buy a $$homeowner grade cordless drill or a $$ construction professional grade cordless drill. I was hoping for the later and in my opinion it is more the former. I hope it stands up to travel and day to day use.
