Varavon MTF-D800 overview

  • 1Description

This Varavon Multifinder Set is designed to offer increased LCD visibility to a Nikon D800. It provides a mounting plate, an LCD viewer, and a loupe with an eyecup that combine to create a stable viewing system while shooting video on your DSLR camera.

The viewer can be used as a sun shade but also contains a mirror for use as a waist-level low-angle viewfinder. With the viewer open and locking lever released, you can insert the loupe with eyecup in order to film as a stabilized, straight viewfinder. Easily adjust the loupe's focus with its conveniently placed dial.

The mirror is designed to minimize ghosting, allowing you to make sure your image is in focus. The LCD mount is covered in rubber to avoid damaging your screen. The aluminum alloy mounting plate features a 1/4"-20 screw for easily attaching the viewfinder to the tripod socket of your Nikon D800.

Multifinder LCD Viewfinder Set for Nikon D800 is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tame the monster If you have a D800 you know it's a monster. For my style of shooting this item was a must. I would have paid more for better materials and fit and finish but that's okay, particularly in the case of the extender that is supplied to push the viewfinder away from the camera body. Actually two of them would have been nice being that they are of a fairly low quality. Access to the rear controls is okay, but not great. It would be nice if Nikon would offer an item like this. If you've been using the extended battery pack, you can lose that. But I guess that's a given. Also, the instructs are abysmal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a snug custom fit for Nikon D800 This products specs indicates its for the Nikon D800 so naturally I expected a custom fit to this camera. This was NOT the case. This viewfinder blocks access to some of the buttons on the back of the camera making it unusable for me. I must have access to all controls on back of camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from why would you get anything else For a fraction of a price you get a multi finder vs $ dollars for a z-viewfinder. This is a sic deal. The buttons are a little tight to get to but keep your protecter of the lcd on and everything works fine. I use a d810 the the ability to shoot low with the multifinder is huge.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but fragile This viewer is perfect for shooting with a shoulder brace, giving a clear and magnified image - really useful in strong sunlight. Flip it up and you can view via the mirror from above - a real boon when shooting at low level. But: The plastic construction is very fragile. My viewer has been glued and taped in several places. Getting it lined up to the screen is also fiddly and you will probably not see all the screen information. With a D800 t is vital to set it so you can see the record on/off indicator on the screen as this does not show elsewhere on the camera. The rubber between the viewer and screen son falls off and has to be taped into place. It is also very irritating when the viewer moves in relation to the tripod or the camera while moving between shots. You have to lock everything tight. Treat it like a baby for great results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worthwhile Purchase My primary need for this product was for my real estate photography, where I routinely shoot off a tripod at waist level, which makes it impossible to use the viewfinder for framing, and difficult to properly see the LCD screen, since my D810 does not have an articulating LCD. The multifinder is just the thing to look down and have a clear view for focus and framing without breaking my neck. As a bonus, I can now also properly use the same camera for video, since the D810 only shoots video with the LCD, which again is very awkward to hold out in front at eye level with a heavy camera. The multifinder eyepiece capability makes this problem go away. The cons are that the construction of the unit is such that its a bit difficult to quickly transition from LCD to viewfinder configuration. You have to wrestle with the hinges to open, close and remove parts as necessary. The entire unit does, however, Quickly and easily attach to the camera body. Also, the multifinder extends quite a bit from the back of the camera so that it's more difficult to carry with the neck strap. This isn't a design flaw, in my opinion, and just comes as a part of the territory in consideration of the advantages of using it.
