I use it to hang backgrounds but box it came in didn't protect the pole, it had a slight warp which made extending hard at first but after extending and retracting a few times setups are a breeze.
I thought it was aluminum

I use this system to hang backdrops. For me it wasn't a replacement. I use the aluminum type when shooting groups on location for a studio that employs me. Much lighter. Especially when carrying 2 of them. I didn't know that they made steel ones. But I'm sure they are much sturdier and will last longer. I just hope they don't rust while being stored in my garage. I didn't even attempt to return them since it was a special order. If I had known that they make them out of material other than aluminum, I would have been more careful to order the right ones. They absolutely serve my purpose and in spite of the composition of them, I am satisfied.
