Manfrotto MVK500AM overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto MVH500A Fluid Drag Video Head with MVT502AM Tripod and Carry Bag features a fluid head with a wide platform to support the HDSLR form factor, and a 60mm half ball for quick leveling without adjusting the legs. The head supports a maximum weight load of 11 pounds and has a built-in, pre-set spring-loaded counterbalance of 5.3 pounds. It features a tilt range of -70°/+90° and provides a panning rotation of 360°. The head also features a side lock system for the sliding quick release plate, a pan handle, and an integrated bubble level.

The two-stage tripod features a 75mm bowl and includes a 75 to 60mm adapter for the MVH500A head. The legs are individually adjustable and feature a mid-level spreader for stability on uneven ground. The minimum height of the tripod and head is just over two feet, for getting low angle shots, and the maximum height is just over five feet. The legs feature non-removable feet suitable for exteriors and interiors, and are gentle on delicate floors. The included padded carry bag makes transporting your tripod and head simple and easy.

Fluid Head

The wide camera platform provides support for DSLR cameras, making this head suitable for both camcorders and DSLR cameras.
The 60mm half ball allows you to quickly level the head without having to readjust the legs. It also makes it simpler to create Dutch angle shots without dangerously unbalancing the tripod.
The spring-loaded counterbalance is fixed at 5.3 pounds; however, the head supports 11 pounds, and the counterbalance will still provide assistance when using camera setups heavier than 5.3 pounds.
Professional fluid cartridges provide fixed fluid drag in both the pan and tilt axes.
The head features a tilt range of 90 degrees forward and 70 degrees back, allowing you to tilt the camera straight down, and tilt it almost straight up.
The head pans through 360 degrees, allowing you to take long panoramic shots or spin the camera around on the head.
The side lock system allows the sliding QR plate to click into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. This gives you the speed of a touch and go quick release with the balance adjustment capability of a sliding plate.
An integrated bubble level on the head aids you in quickly leveling the fluid head.
The included 500PLONG sliding quick release plate includes both a 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie-down screws.
The head includes one pan bar and features two pan bar mounting rosettes, one on each side of the head, for left or right-handed operation. A second optional pan bar allows you to operate the head with two pan bars at the same time.
The Easy Link connector is a 3/8"-16 threaded hole in the side of the head that allows you to easily mount accessories to the fluid head itself, and not the camera.

Tripod legs

Featuring a 75mm bowl for attaching a fluid head, a 75 to 60mm adapter is included for using with the MVH500A head.
The tripod legs can support over 33 pounds, easily carrying the weight of the fluid head and camera. The closed length (without fluid head) is just over two feet, has a height range of 22.4 to 56.5 inches, and weighs only 4.3 pounds.
The legs are constructed out of oval aluminum tubes for strength and durability. Each leg can be independently raised and lowered when required.
The mid-level spreader helps prevent instability that a ground-level spreader can introduce when working on uneven surfaces.
Non-removable rubber feet provide secure grip and are gentle on delicate surfaces, such as interior floors.
An elastic leg strap helps keep the legs secured together during transportation and storage.

Padded Carry Bag

The padded carry bag keeps your tripod and head together during storage or transport.

    Manfrotto MVK500AM reviews

MVH500A Fluid Drag Video Head with MVT502AM Tripod and Carry Bag is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 145.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed This tripod seemed perfect for a run and gun video tripod because of its light weight and the stability and reliability you expect from Manfrotto. However, I didn't notice until after I received it that the feet are fixed and flat and larger than most tripod feet. This is probably great for indoor use on floors or perfectly flat surfaces. But who needs a lightweight tripod for that? I bought it to use on location, and I mostly shoot outdoors. There aren't many perfectly flat surfaces outdoors, so the feet render this tripod practically useless for the purpose I bought it for. Unfortunately, it would cost $ to ship it back so I'll just use it for the occasional indoor shoots I do. I wish the description had made it clear that this tripod is designed for indoor use only.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Recommended As a long time user and fan of Manfrotto tripods I am very dissatisfied with this purchase. I would highly recommend not purchasing this model. The design is poor. The leg clamps do not hold up well and the legs soon start to collapse while in use. Even while locked they start to slide down. If you tighten the clamp with a screw driver then it's almost too hard to close. While the head is fluid it's also just an average design. The tightening ball head comes loose far too easy. I'm surprised by so many good reviews. Maybe I got a lemon but I would definately go for a different model. This was a waste of $ for us.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smooth and Light After having my Bescor tripod break on me it was time for a new one. I figured a Manfrotto would be out of my price range but this one is really fair. I have used much pricier Manfrottos and I didn't notice much difference in the quality of the fluid head between this one. Really smooth pans and the legs are easy to use and adapt to funny surfaces such as banked slopes and tight nooks and crannies. This unit is very light which is a blessing and a curse. With my DSLR it's no problem but with my HVX I sometimes have to hold the legs to avoid having them slip due to the cameras weight. That's easily solvable by placing a sand bag on a leg. Love this thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight but solid I travel to all my professional gigs via public transport so it was important to have a tripod that is lightweight but up to professional standards. This is perfect as it performs perfectly whilst being light enough to carry around all day. Although it doesn't have advanced drag control this is a small issue for such a well priced and dependable tripod

Rated 4 out of 5 by from maybe one of the better economical video tripod kits Purchased to replace a Magnus fluid head that I lost. The best tripod I've owned to date. Plenty sturdy for a camera 4-5 times the weight of my DSLR. The head is smooth and adjusts and locks easily. The only downside was not with the product itself, but confusion about the mail in rebate. Went to apply for the rebate as listed on the online flyer on B&H. The Manfrotto rebate website didn't have this item listed for the $ rebate even though I followed all of the instructions and the correct rebate offer number (they make you pick the exact product purchased). Time will tell whether they honor the rebate or not. They better. That makes this kit a heck of a deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stellar Product This is my first fluid head tripod. Having been working in video a long time and using the ones of my company, I knew I wanted a Manfrotto for personal use. I found this tripod to be incredible. The head is super professional and sturdy. I am a huge fan of the dual post legs which add support, and are still lightweight. This tripod is incredible versatile with plenty of amenities including the ball head which has saved me countless minutes on set already. I would have to say this is my favorite tripod out of all the tripods I have used including more and less expensive models.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flimsy Sticks The Head: The head is decent, but the spring loaded counter balance is near useless unless your camera just happens to the weight that it can balance. Otherwise it's well built and has held up to regular use over the last year. The Sticks: Simply said, they're junk. They wiggle around easily, and are among the least stable legs I've ever used. The aluminum seems thin and cheap, and the plastic levers seem as if they could easily break. Tripod legs are where the rubber meets the road, and need to firmly hold the head and camera without moving. These fail miserably at doing so, even with the simplest of camera pans/tilts. TLDR: I would never recommend these legs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product This is my first over $125.00 tripod. Over all I am very impressed. I gave 4 out of 5 stars because of one draw back. The pan setting seems to have a min drag that is still a bit stiff. I have found that when I have the tripod on grass it is fine, but when the tripod is on a hard wood floor I have to keep one hand on the tripod while doing a pan that is any faster than slow speed to keep the legs in position. I am thinking about trying sandbags.
