The nickel version of the CMC 6 Ug Microphone Amplifier Mono Set from SCHOEPS consists of the CMC 6 Ug microphone amplifier, an MK 41 microphone capsule, a CUT 1 filter, an SG 20 stand clamp with swivel, and a B 5 solid foam popscreen.
The CMC 6 Ug is designed for standard +48V and +12V phantom power. Its circuitry recognizes the supply voltage and adjusts itself automatically, with more current draw at +12V but otherwise comparable performance. However, the 12V mode consumes less power and might be preferred for battery-powered recording.
The CMC 6 Ug amplifier offers a low impedance, symmetrical, transformerless, direct-coupled Class A output stage with low distortion and interference.
The MK 41 microphone capsule features a highly directional hypercardioid pickup pattern. Sound arriving from off axis is attenuated even more than with a cardioid pattern which makes the pickup less susceptible to acoustic feedback. However, a loudspeaker should not be located directly along the rear axis of the microphone. Its directivity is highly independent of frequency, so that even sounds arriving off axis and reverberant sounds are registered without coloration. Consequently, even distant placement of the capsule produces a very natural sound.
The CUT 1 filter is inserted between the microphone capsule and the microphone amplifier. It attenuates by 24 dB/octave at 60 Hz to prevent infrasonic sounds such as room rumble and wind noise from being picked up by the microphone.
The CUT 1 filter also offsets proximity effect to improve speech intelligibility in reverberant rooms by means of an additional 6dB/oct rolloff at a variable frequency between 70 and 600 Hz.
The SG 20 Stand Clamp can support a microphone with a diameter of up to 21mm. The base of this mount has a 5/8"-27 NS internal thread. A threaded adapter is supplied for 3/8" and 1/2" mounting. The angle can be varied continuously in the vertical plane.
The B 5 Solid Foam Popscreen provides sufficient protection at normal speaking distances with minimal effect on sound quality for cardioid and other directional capsules, especially when speech capsules are used. With omnidirectional capsules, it may even be used outdoors in light wind.
