The matte gray BLM 3g Boundary Layer Microphone Capsule from Schoeps is used to capture audio in critical applications such as TV, film sound, stage dialogue and more. It features a pressure transducer that offers high signal-to-noise ratio and stable performance. The plate of the BLM 3g is only 5mm thick and the transducer is not mounted at its center. The edges of the plate have little effect upon the sound pickup. Off-axis sounds encounter very little frequency discrimination. Sound coloration is low, even for moving sound sources because the frequency response is essentially the same for all angles within the hemispherical pickup pattern.
The capsule itself and the electrostatic pressure transducer is inherently insensitive to wind and vibration. The BLM 3g is comparatively heavy compared to other mics of this kind so it picks up very little solid-borne noise. For example, when footsteps are recorded, most of the sound reaching the microphone will be conducted through the air rather than the floor.
The BLM 3g resembles any other microphone capsule of the Colette series in that it needs a microphone amplifier (e.g. CMC, CMD 2 U or M 222) to form a complete microphone. This allows active accessories such as the low-cut filter (CUT 1 or CUT 2) and the Active Cable (KC) to be added as well.
