The Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K features a Super 35mm sized image sensor with a global shutter and a Canon EF lens mount. The camera is capable of recording Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p video using the 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 family of codecs, as well as the visually lossless, compressed 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW at 4000x2160 resolution. The camera's ability to expose for 12 stops of dynamic range lends the image a truly film-like look, and the Super 35mm (21.12 x 11.88mm) sized sensor approximates the standard of traditional film.

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K retains the beautifully crafted design and machined aluminum chassis of the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Much like its predecessor, this camera features a 5" touchscreen LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution, which enables monitoring and playback as well as an efficient means for navigating the menu and entering metadata. The camera also includes a full license for DaVinci Resolve color grading software and UltraScope for live scopes via a Thunderbolt connection.

Super 35 Sensor with Global Shutter

With a large Super 35 size sensor you get familiar framing and behavior from the lenses you already own. The sensor features a global shutter so you get perfect panning, without rolling shutter artifacts.

Canon EF Lens Mount

With the Canon EF compatible lens mount you can choose high quality optics that are designed to take advantage of the large Super 35 size sensor with minimal cropping. This lets you use Canon's extensive line of EF lenses, as well as Zeiss ZE lenses and other third party EF mount lenses. The active mount enables full electronic control with compatible EF mount lenses.

Ultra HD 4K and 1080HD ProRes Recording

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K records Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p using the ProRes 422 family of codecs (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy). At a massive 3840 x 2160 pixels, Ultra HD 4K is four times the resolution of 1080p. The camera also features a single 6G-SDI output which supports Ultra HD live production.

CinemaDNG RAW Recording

For the highest quality and most post-production flexibility, the camera can record using the compressed, yet visually lossless, 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW. RAW recording yields 4000x2160 resolution, using every pixel from the sensor. This gives you a little extra width to work with, useful when cropping to 3840x2160 or upscaling to DCI standard 4096x2160 for your final deliverable.

Built-in SSD Recorder

The camera's built-in recorder utilizes removable 2.5" SSDs. You can playback directly from the camera, mount the disk to any computer, or use Blackmagic Design's HyperDeck Studio deck. When finished shooting, simply connect the SSD to a computer and edit or color grade shots straight from the disc.

12 Stops of Dynamic Range

With 12 stops of dynamic range you get amazing looking images beyond those of regular video cameras or even many high-end broadcast cameras. All this dynamic range is captured into ProRes or CinemaDNG files at 4K resolution, so images retain a beautiful film look. By capturing more detail from the sensor you have greater creative flexibility in post production. You can really push the shadows or highlights in either direction and preserve fine details.

Standard Connections

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses standard connections, so you never need to source custom cables. It includes a 6G-SDI connection for Ultra HD resolution or down converted HD output over a single SDI cable. The built in Thunderbolt connection lets you plug into a laptop computer and use the included UltraScope software for real time waveform monitoring, and the 1/4" jack mic/line inputs enable high quality uncompressed audio recordings. Other connections include a 12 to 30 volt DC input, a 3.5mm headphone input socket and LANC remote control.

Touchscreen LCD Display

The integrated 5" LCD display features 800 x 480 resolution and touchscreen technology. Use the capacitive touchscreen to access menus and change settings such as recording format, shutter angle and more. Double tap the screen to zoom into the image for fast and accurate focus. Tap once on the screen to display the metadata entry page where you can enter information such as shot number, search tags, scene number, timecode and more. You can even set shot number and other data to increment automatically. This metadata saves directly into your files and is compatible with popular editing software, simplifying file management in post production.

Flexible Power Options

The inclusion of an internal rechargeable battery makes the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K a truly portable high resolution camera. You get up to 90 minutes of recording time from the battery and the remaining power information is shown in the data strip at the bottom of the picture. The wide input voltage of 12-30V means you can connect external professional battery packs that will let you operate the camera longer while recharging the internal battery at the same time.

Remote Control

The LANC protocol is a standard method for the remote control of many professional cameras. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K features a standard 2.5mm jack for connecting to a remote that lets you trigger the camera to start and stop recording, plus it supports electronic lens control of the focus and iris, all using an industry standard protocol and jack connection.

Other Features

  • Includes DaVinci Resolve color grading software and UltraScope
  • FOCUS button turns the peaking display on and off
  • IRIS button adjusts iris settings when used with a compatible EF mount lens
  • Integrated mono microphone
  • Mono speaker
  • Three 1/4"-20 UNC threaded mounting points on the top of the camera
  • One 1/4"-20 UNC threaded tripod mount with locator pin on the bottom

From someone who has before only shot on a 60D and GoPro - I think a lot of people see how cheap this camera is and expect it work like a DSLR or similar setup, or don't expect to spend more money to complete their kit. Or maybe they know they have to light their scenes, but choose cheap lenses and are confused as to why it doesn't turn out the way they want. Treat this camera like you would a RED. I have been shooting with this camera for about a month now and it is ABSURD how much camera you get for the price. Expect to allocate money for rigs, media, monitors, GLASS(!!!) etc this is NOT a run and gun camera with a kit lens (although it can be if you have the right gear and knowledge). I experience none of the FPN people complain about. Just beautiful, high dynamic range images with an AMAZING global shutter which makes my fast moving action shots that much more life-like. I would rate this camera 5 stars even without the included Davinci Resolve Studio. That's just crazy. The internal battery exists mainly as a backup to swap external batteries, and buyers should expect to purchase external power. Make sure you get SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD's to shoot RAW with no dropped frames. If you want higher frame rate, just save a little more and get the Ursa Mini or Ursa.

Worth the value

Everything you've read about the 4K version is true. Don't mistake this for the first generation BM Production camera! They've made some great improvements with this version. With the EF mount and some great lenses you get stunning cinematic videos. Going back to my first statement, I am surprised by its performance in low light settings. Probably not as good as some of its competitors but with only 3 ISO settings, not bad. I haven't experienced the dark spots of unrecorded information and have shot into some intensely blown out light. The global shutter performs beautifully. A couple things you may have not read. ONLY use premium SSDs otherwise you will drop footage with a lower end SSD. We went with a secondary low end drive for backup. Huge mistake, most of what we shot on that drive contained dropped footage and had to reshoot the next day. Pay attention to the !. The SSD also gets very hot being contained in the camera but does not affect the performance. Every once in awhile the camera doesn't respond and you have to power cycle it. The firmware update includes Cinema DNG. Be forewarned, 4K RAW Cinema DNG is heavy on processing power so bulk up! Works great with Adobe's Camera RAW for After Effects but is not available for Premiere. If you have a solid workflow it can be worth the extra processing restraint especially in challenging lighting situations and special VFX shots.

Challenging but capable

I haven't spent much time with the camera yet but my initial impressions mirror those of other users: The camera is challenging to expose properly. You get the most dynamic range and lowest noise out of it at its native ISO of 400 so you have to use ND and lighting to keep it there. It's not a low light camera. The camera's interface doesn't provide unlimited options but lays out the settings you can change such as frame rate, shutter speed and recording format fairly elegantly. The LCD is a better mirror than monitor outdoors. And the internal battery is vurtually useless, making an external battery solution an absolute requirement. But if you're able to work around its limitations the camera produces beautiful 4K images for relatively little $.

A cinematic beast for a fraction of the price of a Red/Arri

I bought the BMPC4K in the end of 2016, due to the fact that the Ursa mini wasn't in stock and I couldn't be happier. This small cam takes SSD drives, has a dozen of battery options, and it doesn't overheat. It fits all types of bags and is really sturdy. For the film enthusiast the Global Shutter in this camera is a total blast. Adjusting it, one can model the motion blur, resulting in a very pleasant cinematic pans. It comes with its own color-correction software - Davinci Resolve, which is simply marvellous. This camera basically enables you to create amazing footage, with which you can totally compete at the art-house film festivals, as an aspiring filmmaker - with fine glass, lighting and post-production, of course. It's native ISO is 400. Overall, it's I believe a groundbreaking tool for filmmakers, for its capabilities, price and package, which gives you something special, for the fraction of the price of a Red or an Arri. For inexperienced filmmakers, who know nothing about Lighting for Film, and you could burst into tears when you realise that you can't shoot at night without any light source, maybe you should turn on the road to the Sony's toys. For the die-hard film geek, this camera is the best buy.

We've used the BMPC4K as our go-to camera for in-house shoots for several years. It's a great camera and I like that there is an EF mount version so that we can use our Canon lenses.

Most of the people rating it low are those who didn't know what they were ordering for. Who didn't have time to research before buying anything. I like doing research when I buy a product and did it this time as well. So when I bought it, I wasn't expecting it to perform like 5d in terms of low light, I knew it had a short battery life and it overheats sometimes. And I knew this was definitely not an all-day-out-in-the-field type camera. And when I saw the quality it produces over any other DSLR, I knew I have to buy this one. Especially at a price tag of $2995!! So guys who are giving it one star, and saying they hate their career because of this, they should know, they are already not taking their career seriously when they are buying something without having a time to research over it before. It's like ordering pizza and complaining that it doesn't tastes like a burger!!

Some website like BH say the sensor size is 21.12 x 11.88mm but Blackmagic's website says 22mm x 11.88mm.. I know this sounds negligible but I'm after a camera for VFX work and would like to be sure I can get all measurements to help with tracking. Can anyone confirm?

Not quite. Never use ISO 800 as it's too noisy. This camera is great in other ISOs but basically requires additional lights, hence it's called 'Production camera', not run-gun stuff
