Blackmagic Design Production 4K overview

  • 1Description

The Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K features a Super 35mm sized image sensor with a global shutter and a Canon EF lens mount. The camera is capable of recording Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p video using the 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 family of codecs, as well as the visually lossless, compressed 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW at 4000x2160 resolution. The built-in recorder utilizes removable 2.5" SSDs, which enable the high data rates required by RAW and 880Mbps ProRes HQ. The camera's ability to expose for 12 stops of dynamic range lends the image a truly film-like look, and the Super 35mm (21.12 x 11.88mm) sized sensor approximates the standard of traditional film.

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K retains the beautifully crafted design and machined aluminum chassis of the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Much like its predecessor, this camera features a 5" touchscreen LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution, which enables monitoring and playback as well as an efficient means for navigating the menu and entering metadata. The camera also includes a full license for DaVinci Resolve color grading software and UltraScope for live scopes via a Thunderbolt connection.

Super 35 Sensor with Global Shutter
With a large Super 35 size sensor you get familiar framing and behavior from the lenses you already own. The sensor features a global shutter so you get perfect panning, without rolling shutter artifacts.
Canon EF Lens Mount
With the Canon EF compatible lens mount you can choose high quality optics that are designed to take advantage of the large Super 35 size sensor with minimal cropping. This lets you use Canon's extensive line of EF lenses, as well as Zeiss ZE lenses and other third party EF mount lenses. The active mount enables full electronic control with compatible EF mount lenses.
Ultra HD 4K and 1080HD ProRes Recording
The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K records Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p using the ProRes 422 family of codecs (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy). At a massive 3840 x 2160 pixels, Ultra HD 4K is four times the resolution of 1080p. The camera also features a single 6G-SDI output which supports Ultra HD live production.
CinemaDNG RAW Recording
For the highest quality and most post-production flexibility, the camera can record using the compressed, yet visually lossless, 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW. RAW recording yields 4000x2160 resolution, using every pixel from the sensor. This gives you a little extra width to work with, useful when cropping to 3840x2160 or upscaling to DCI standard 4096x2160 for your final deliverable.
Built-in SSD Recorder
The camera's built-in recorder utilizes removable 2.5" SSDs. You can playback directly from the camera, mount the disk to any computer, or use Blackmagic Design's HyperDeck Studio deck. When finished shooting, simply connect the SSD to a computer and edit or color grade shots straight from the disc.
12 Stops of Dynamic Range
With 12 stops of dynamic range you get amazing looking images beyond those of regular video cameras or even many high-end broadcast cameras. All this dynamic range is captured into ProRes or CinemaDNG files at 4K resolution, so images retain a beautiful film look. By capturing more detail from the sensor you have greater creative flexibility in post production. You can really push the shadows or highlights in either direction and preserve fine details.
Standard Connections
The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses standard connections, so you never need to source custom cables. It includes a 6G-SDI connection for Ultra HD resolution or down converted HD output over a single SDI cable. The built in Thunderbolt connection lets you plug into a laptop computer and use the included UltraScope software for real time waveform monitoring, and the 1/4" jack mic/line inputs enable high quality uncompressed audio recordings. Other connections include a 12 to 30 volt DC input, a 3.5mm headphone input socket and LANC remote control.
Touchscreen LCD Display
The integrated 5" LCD display features 800 x 480 resolution and touchscreen technology. Use the capacitive touchscreen to access menus and change settings such as recording format, shutter angle and more. Double tap the screen to zoom into the image for fast and accurate focus. Tap once on the screen to display the metadata entry page where you can enter information such as shot number, search tags, scene number, timecode and more. You can even set shot number and other data to increment automatically. This metadata saves directly into your files and is compatible with popular editing software, simplifying file management in post production.
Flexible Power Options
The inclusion of an internal rechargeable battery makes the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K a truly portable high resolution camera. You get up to 90 minutes of recording time from the battery and the remaining power information is shown in the data strip at the bottom of the picture. The wide input voltage of 12-30V means you can connect external professional battery packs that will let you operate the camera longer while recharging the internal battery at the same time.
Remote Control
The LANC protocol is a standard method for the remote control of many professional cameras. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K features a standard 2.5mm jack for connecting to a remote that lets you trigger the camera to start and stop recording, plus it supports electronic lens control of the focus and iris, all using an industry standard protocol and jack connection.

    Blackmagic Design Production 4K reviews

Production Camera 4K (EF Mount) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I've been using this camera for about a month now and I can say that this camera produce beautiful footage. Before this camera,I used canon 5DMKIII with magic lantern installed and there is no comparison between the two system. I only shoot raw file format and after good post processing and color grading, it is beautiful to look. Only drawback I can say is that the battery life is very short and only the fastest SSD deliver no drop frame when shooting in RAW. Sandisk Extreme Pro are among the usable SSD and I used Toshiba bought from B H works fine too. All in all I'm very happy with this camera compared to others that shoot 4k that cost thousands more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hold off on buying this camera ... This camera has potential. However, BMD has engaged in false advertising and has lost credibility due to sending this camera out with sensor flaws (FPN). The camera has less dynamic range than advertised and it has only two ISO settings that actually work 200 and 400. As it sits, this is a beta camera at best, but those of us who have bought one have paid a high price for a camera that does not work properly. BMD has created a very troubling situation for themselves and unfortunately has lost credibility due to failing to update and fix this camera and update the BMCC. They have let their customers down. They will have to work hard to regain the professional public's trust. I hope they can pull it off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fixed Pattern Noise a HUGE Problem I bought the BM 4K camera in hopes of getting everything they promised: A S35 Sensor that shoots in RAW and Prores. I was willing to work around the fact that there are no scopes or histograms included on the camera and that there would be a need for external batteries and sound (no xlr's). However, I started noticing Vertical lines showing up on my camera picture. I notified Blackmagic and they described it as Fixed Pattern Noise. They acknowledged the problem but REFUSED to return the faulty sensor. Here instead is what they suggested I do You can check the forums for workarounds. I believe you can underexpose, use a lower ISO then fix it in post. The camera is useless at 800 ISO even with a well lit shot. This is a serious problem on ALL camera's. Not just a few.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from STAY AWAY Many cameras suffer from severe FPN. A faulty sensor that ruins the image, making the camera useless. Those who have bought it and has got FPN, are unable to have their cameras replaced and there will be no money back. This is Blackmagics policy. A growing number of customers are now in this situation and blackmagic refuses to address the problem. People feel robbed, and this is indeed a serious situation. Chech blackmagic forums for more information. And STAY AWAY from this camera

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera I use this camera to shoot short films. It has been going great for me. Great image quality and it is the perfect next step for DSLR users. I had a DSLR and went to this camera and I am able to use all my lenses which helps a lot. I'm just a little upset with the black dot on the sun. I didn't think it would be a big a deal but now I realize how much I film the sun and I can't. I use an external recorder for audio so the bad audio in camera doesn't bother me. This camera is awesome and I would recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic It's easy to list the things that are wrong with this camera. The screen is terrible in sunlight, the exposure settings are clunky and unintuitive, the 800ASA ceiling is very restrictive, there is no time-remaining indicator, and the battery life is a joke. I would not recommend this camera for documentary or unscripted productions. It takes longer to properly expose/WB your shot than it did on our 7D. This is for very controlled (well-lit) conditions. That being said, I do not regret buying this camera one bit. For the price, I'm more than willing to take a little extra time at a shoot to bring back the beautiful ProRes images that come from this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Baby Alexa There is no perfect camera - just the camera that is right for you. Is this a documentary camera? No. Is this as SloMo camera? No way. Is this a low light camera? Not really. Is this a camera that captures a beautiful image perfect for short films, music videos, and feature film (possibly b camera)? Hell Yeah! My camera has a little bit of FNP - but with the new firmware release, RAW makes it pretty small. The thing is you can't push the camera too much, you have to be able to light your set. If you can, this image matches ALEXA's like none other. More filmic than the RED, C300, or and DSLR. My advice, think about what you are buying a camera for. In the right niche this camera is amazing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Challenging but capable I haven't spent much time with the camera yet but my initial impressions mirror those of other users: The camera is challenging to expose properly. You get the most dynamic range and lowest noise out of it at its native ISO of 400 so you have to use ND and lighting to keep it there. It's not a low light camera. The camera's interface doesn't provide unlimited options but lays out the settings you can change such as frame rate, shutter speed and recording format fairly elegantly. The LCD is a better mirror than monitor outdoors. And the internal battery is vurtually useless, making an external battery solution an absolute requirement. But if you're able to work around its limitations the camera produces beautiful 4K images for relatively little $.
