Low Resonance Enclosure Design
HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a dense MDF with a damped acoustic response. HS Series engineers also employed a traditional three-way mitered-joint technique. Common to architectural design, this construction firmly anchors the corners of the enclosure to improve durability and eliminate unwanted resonance that can influence overall sound
Noise Reduction Technology
Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting a noise reduction technology that incorporates an analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex. Through this analysis Yamaha has arrived at a port design that reduces noise up to 6dB
Controls and Connectivity
HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. ROOM CONTROL allows you to attenuate the unnatural, exaggerated low-end that can often occur when speakers are placed next to walls, while HIGH TRIM allows for more flexible control of high frequency response. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks

Solid upgrade

Upgrade for my production setup. Previously working just in headphones. More than ample volume for smaller rooms. To my ears bass is present but not overstated. Clear mids/highs. Very solid option in this price range.

Beware of the kit

I am very happy with the monitors, they sound really good. However beware of the kit deal. It's not a deal at all. Whomever put the package together included pads which are way too big for the monitors. I'm not sure why, but my guess is that they need to get rid of large pads. I had to order new small pads, for which they charged me extra, even though the small pads price is cheaper than the large, and on top of that they charged me for the shipping of the old pads back. I ended up paying more money than if I had ordered all the items separately.

Worked as advertised.

Best for the money

For the price these are the best small near field monitors in terms of easy translation to general hifi systems etc. They don't require much practice to nail the mix and have good bass response that's not too boomy for a ported cabinet. My preferred monitors are the original NS10 and Unity Audio The Rock MkII but both require substantial practice and I still love these just as a general work horse.

Great Value for reference speakers

I bought these to supplement a mixing setup with larger 10 speakers, and they do a great job giving me a new perspective, especially monitoring EQ adjustments in the mid-range and high-end. I also bought a Mackie Big Knob to flip back and forth quickly, and love being able to keep the energy up while I check my mix quickly on the different speakers. Highly recommend to take your studio and mixes to the new level.

the best, period

There is a reason you see these in almost any studio you walk into. I've had mine for 13yrs and just ordered this replacement due to someone knocking over my speaker smh.

A pair of these speakers were purchased for my son who is into video editing. He said they have exceeded his expectations. The sounds are crisp and the overall quality is very good. He is very, very happy. The items were securely packaged by BH and arrived in the Caribbean in tact.

How do you connect this to your computer? Do you need to buy a special amp or something?
Asked by: Jesse
To connect the Yamaha HS5 Powered Studio Monitors with Cables and Isolation Pads Kit to a computer, you can use a monitor controller such as the Mackie Big Knob Passive Studio Monitor Controller (B&H # MABKPASIVBLK). You can connect a cable from the computer's 3.5mm TRS audio jack (headphone output) to the 3.5mm input on the monitor controller, and then connect both of the HS5 speakers to the output of the monitor controller. The only cable you would need to add is an aux cable like the Hosa Technology Stereo Mini Male to Stereo Mini Male Cable - 3' (B&H # HOSMMSMM3).
