Casio PX-5S overview

  • 1Description

The Privia PX-5S from Casio is an 88-key digital stage piano featuring a scaled hammer action keyboard that provides more resistance at the lower end of the keyboard, and lighter keys towards the top. Four dynamic layers of stereo piano samples are integrated with the company's proprietary Linear Morphing System, resulting in a grand piano sound with seamless transitions and excellent dynamic range.

Simulated ebony and ivory keys provide an authentic touch, that when combined with the AiR sound source, provide a touch-to-sound connection that is matched only by a real grand piano. Adding to the sense of realism, Acoustic Resonance DSP simulates the sound of the open strings when the dampers are raised by the pedal. However, the instrument is not simply about a great piano sound. Other sounds include a classic electric piano, harpsichord and clav sounds, as well as string and other synthesized patches.

A wide variety of effects can be applied, at the system level, as insert effects, or on the master bus. An eight-track sequencer can hold up to 1,000 phrases, and four, sixteen-step arpeggiators can be set up independently. Further, the instrument can function as a comprehensive controller, with up to four zones available. Each zone can define how the instrument's various control elements function (knobs, sliders, etc.), and MIDI output can be via USB or the dedicated MIDI connectors. With the addition of Apple's optional Camera Connection Kit (sold separately), control of an iPad is also possible.

    Casio PX-5S reviews

Privia PX-5S - Digital Stage Piano is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeding my expectations I needed a lightweight ! 88 key, keyboard controller with a decent piano action and some sliders/rotary pots for controlling VST instruments. The key was LIGHT ! so I wasn't expecting a Steinway action but actually, the action is even better than I remember in my brief test in the store. The more I play it, the more I'm liking it. The on-board grand piano sound is, similarly, much better than I expected, but, I have a ton of high end VSTi's so I didn't really need it. But, if you need a REALLY good acoustic piano sound for gigging that had some good bite when you spank it, this fits the bill very well. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good choice for apt. dwellers with sensitive neighbors I'm severely tech challenged. Nevertheless, I need a keyboard that I can use at night in a city apartment. The Casio Privia PX-5s has the sound I prefer most; a believable grand piano sound. I tried a comparable well known higher priced brand but found it not as authentic a sound. I'm very reluctant to press any buttons, so I cannot comment on the other settings - twangs and groans - not my thing. So far, after a few weeks of use, I'm still satisfied with the instrument and my neighbors don't hear me playing because I use earphones. Will probably never press any other buttons. I would recommend it to those with my needs and sensibilities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great Find I've been looking for a lightweight stage piano for years, as my current one is just too heavy, and discourages me from seeking more gigs. The PX5S is the answer. It sounds great, and the price is terrific. It's a great value. Having now used it on a gig, the difference in weight is a blessing for this old back of mine. Light weigh alone is not enough, and the Privia comes through with stellar sound quality, a terrific weighted keyed, and a raft of useful features. I'm extremely=tremely please to have purchased this piano. I have already been spreading the word about its many virtues.
