Genelec M040 overview

  • 1Description

This black M040 Active Two-Way 6.5" Studio Monitor from Genelec offers a neutral and accurate reproduction of the source material, in a design that's committed to environmental sustainability. The cabinet of the M040 features rounded edges and a gently curved front and sides, which minimize edge diffraction and provide better imaging. It's made of a Natural Composite Enclosure, which is a compound of wood fiber and recyclable material. This is part of an initiative called Genelec Embedded Sustainability, where the products deliver a reduced carbon footprint, without sacrificing accuracy or performance.

Another attribute which adds to the inherent sustainability of the M040 are its built-in class D amplifiers, which are more power efficient, lightweight, and have a cooler operation than the class A/B amplifiers that are typically used in active near-field monitors. Its 1" metal dome tweeter and 6.5" woofer are powered by 50-watt and 80-watt class D amplifiers, respectively.

A feature called Intelligent Signal Sensing automatically puts the M040 into Standby mode, where it consumes less than 0.5 watts of power when an audio signal isn't present. When a signal is present, the M040 automatically powers on. A combo XLR and 1/4" TRS jack and an unbalanced RCA jack are provided for input. Room response controls optimize the EQ for bass and tabletop use. A dedicated Bass Control switch adjusts the response of even lower frequencies, to adapt the speaker to its environment. One position on the switch provides no bass EQ, for use when there is free space around the speaker. To compensate for surfaces near the speaker, the Bass Control switch enables you to roll off -2 or -4 dB.

Laminar Integrated Port minimizes vibration and provides accurate low frequency response
Advanced Directivity Controlled Waveguide provides a flat frequency response for on and off-axis listening positions
Voltage is selected automatically, making it possible to use the M040 all over the world
Three output level control settings: Very Low (-20 dB), Low (-10 dB), and High (0 dB)

    Genelec M040 reviews

M040 Active Two-Way 6.5" Studio Monitor (Single, Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Satisfied I am using the M040 as reference monitors in a 9'x9' video editing studio. They have transformed my editing experience by giving me a much fuller frequency range and neutral sound. I find myself listening to a lot more music during my breaks in the day. It is amazing how much detail is actually in much of the music I've loved for years and never noticed. It is also amazing at revealing music that has flaws in the original mix that I have never noticed as well. I love the unique earth friendly material of the cabinet. I love the fact that the monitors turn themselves on and off based on the presence of a signal. Personally I feel that they are the most attractive audio monitors that I've seen. I know that Genelec is aiming these monitors at the lower priced market specifically those doing music creation in their homes and apartments, but it is obvious to me that these monitors are capable of any near field application you can conceive of. I also added a Genelec 9000A Stereo Volume Control to this monitor setup. It makes for a perfect volume control inches from my hand. I know that there are very few reliable reviews out there right now concerning this monitor. Hopefully my contribution will guide a few of you to a very satisfying purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from these are the bass you are looking for Agree with everything TATE IO has to say in his review. I bought a lower end pair of Gen's and was disappointed with the bass response as compared to my previous, significantly cheaper, studio monitors, and my setup doesn't work to accomidate a sub. I decided to try the M040's and they don't disappoint. The low end response is gorgeous and so clean! It's "tight" and not muddy as most setups are. I can single out a bass guitar's strings being plucked for the first time I've ever heard on songs I'm very familiar with and have been listening to for years. Crazy! If you're doing a lot of super low end work I guess you might want a sub with these too, but I've found them to be more than adequite on their own. The response on these babies is similar to the 8030b's but at 2/3rd of the cost. I like the design and color of the 8000 series better, and these are missing the genius-designed isopods, but I'll make do for the big price savings. I'd actually expect the eco-friendly version to be the more expensive model, so that's good about these though. Pretty cool. Everything's very evenly balanced, and the -2 and -4 bass controls on the back really help accomidate your room situation and tastes. As do the other two room EQ and vol controls, very thoughtful to have those intregrated right in. I wish they did the same -2 -4 for treble TBH but no biggie. It's nice they are real switches too as opposed to dipswitces you need a tool for like on the 8000 series. Mids and high end go without saying from Genelec, are very pristine and revealing. I'm hearing things I never have heard in music tracks before, and I can rest assured that mixes I am doing aren't colored up/inaccurate. Only other con is I wish the led was smaller and dimmer, and nuetral white instead of green. It's not a deal breaker and obviously can be covered, but stands out in a dark edit bay. They probably are designed for music rooms where this isn't really important. Not sure you can go wrong with these! If you're looking for 2.0 (no sub) and are on the fence about what to get, look no further. Lovely, great sounding monitors.
