Sirui G20X overview

  • 1Description

The Sirui G-20X Ball Head is an extremely sturdy head with separate control knobs for pan, tilt, and tension, plus an Arca-style clamp for the included quick-release plate. The ball locks down extremely tightly thanks to the double-bevel locking system which allows support of cameras up to 44 lb and safe 90° tilting for portrait orientation. The quick-release clamp features a secondary release button that prevents any inadvertent disengagement of the camera/plate from the clamp, thereby adding to the head's overall security and stability.

Three separate controls (pan, tilt and lock) allow a photographer to exercise extremely fine control over the orientation of the camera, whether it's a DSLR, 35mm, medium-format camera, or even a camcorder. Pan, for instance, can be adjusted while the tilt stays locked, enabling precise movement that's measurable via degree markers for panoramic photography at the panning base.

The G-20X uses Computer Aided Manufacturing and an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy with a custom anodized surface treatment to ensure a durable, high-quality finish.

Precision Manufacturing
Sirui uses Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) to produce a support ball with tolerances within 0.01 mm of a perfect sphere. This uncompromising precision ensures superior performance and smooth operation for any type of 35 mm DLSR or medium format camera system
Superior Construction Material
Sirui ball heads are made of aviation quality aluminum alloy 7075-T6 and 6067-T6 for long life and maximum strength. Quick release plates are made from forged aluminum alloy. The forging technique produces high-density metals with much greater strength than die-cast methods. Optional model specific plates are available
Control
The panning base is designed with a 360° dial. Having a separate panning base lock knob provides greater accuracy for panning and panoramic shooting
Secure Locking
The patented safety lock design, and Sirui quick release plates, effectively prevent the camera from accidentally sliding off of the ball head. Most Arca-style quick release plates can be used on Sirui ball heads
Durable Surface
The custom anodized surface treatment makes all metal surfaces highly resistant to abrasions and produces a beautiful appearance
High Load Capacity
Superior locking force allows support of loads up to 44 lb
Easy Leveling
Dual bubble levels allow precise horizontal leveling for critical shooting situations

    Sirui G20X reviews

G-20X Ball Head is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from In a word, smooth! Love this matched product with the Sirui T-2205X 5 section carbon fiber tripod (see my review on that). This head is amazingly smooth and holds the camera sturdily in place. Love the knobs which are critical in a tripod head. Also has redundant locking mechanisms to ensure you do not drop your gear while mounting or dismounting. Another truly amazing feature is the screw mechanism has a lift action turn lever so you do not need a screw driver or coin when tightening the screw to the bottom of the camera. I never expected to see this and am thankful for it every time I use it. Wonderfully crafted and perfectly functional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Ball Head Value I purchased this ball head to use on my small Manfrotto tripod which I use for travel. After looking at other heads in the same price range, I decided on the Sirui because it was the sturdiest head with the most features for the money. I particularly like the tension control and the separate pan control. Other heads in this range do not have these features. The head does have 2 small bubble levels, one on the QR plate and one on the QR knob. Overall build quality is excellent. It has a solid feel and the control knobs feel substantial. I use with my Nikon D300s, battery grip and long lens with excellent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Perfect When I say simply perfect I am referring to the use of this excellent ball head with the camera equipment that I use. That is a Nikon D7100 with a variety of lenses up to a 70-300mm. It simply works perfectly. The 3 knob control permits any adjustment required to be made smoothly and effortlessly. The overall design of the product is ergonomically and esthetically beautiful. So much so that when not in use I keep it on my desk as a paperweight and conversation starter. If you are using similar equipment to mine the G-20X is an excellent choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bang For The Buck I recently took the plunge and finally got a proper tripod, ballhead and l bracket. I mated the G20X with a Feisol 3442 carbon fiber tripod and Kirk L bracket for my D800. The G20X is an incredible value. Lightweight, very sturdy and well built. I like the quality of the unit and the ease of setting up my shots. Smooth panning and other movements. Easily supports my camera and a 24-70 or 16-35 lens. You should definitely consider this ballhead for landscapes, seascapes and travel shooting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good budget head This head was selected for a newish photographer getting a tripod rig as a gift. Pro's: Arca Swiss compatible Load rating listed at 44#'s Nicely machined and surfaces clean for easy smooth adjustments. The locking knobs are smooth and the ball lock-up comes on progressively. Friction adjustment works well and the panning knob is sufficient. The sample I had took a bit more tightening to securely tighten the panning lock. The camera plate is nicely machined and sliding it in-out is easy. The safety release is also smooth to operate. Bubble levels on clamp and knob for horizontal and vertical positioning. Cons: One cannot rely on when a manufacturer lists load ratings because in the wild it varies. This head works well on axis and while I cannot test the actual pound rating, it is more than sufficient to hold most beginner level rigs with even 300mm f4 lens. What changes is long exposures 5 + seconds where stability issues begin to show up. This is also related to tripod legs used for a complete package. For ball heads, look for larger ball diameters for improved load clamping abilities. Smaller heads can have very good load ratings and those will cost more $. The on axis lock-up was strong and would not pose an issue unless the camera rig is heavy. 300/2.8, pro level bodies that may produce more leverage issues. For a small head like this to balance such a camera rig would be pushing it for long exposures. At shutter speeds faster than 3 seconds, this head is capable. The lighter weight camera rigs for long exposures would need to be tested in your situation to verify what the head can accomodate. All said, I felt this was a quality product that will serve the beginning to mid-level photographer in most shooting situations. I would also suggest an L camera plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from first and only ball head the Sirui G20X is the first ball head I've every used, I can see any reason I would try any other brand. I used the head on a Benbo 2 tripod for some close-up shots. With the tension control knob it made fine adjustments very easy. The Siriu head is very solid with no creep. The only negative thing is the leveling bubble is covered when the camera is mounted, but is a very minor inconvenience. This is a very good product I would strongly recommend this brand to anyone-

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice small ball head I was amazed at how small this ballhead was when I received it. Smaller than I thought. It's very light too. Great for pairing up with a small set of tripod legs for backpacking or hiking. The lock and tension adjustment knobs are seperate. I prefer that design to the 2 controls being integrated into one. The pan movement is very smooth-almost fluid like. The lock on hte Arca style clamp is good and bad. Good because it provides peace of mind that your camera won't fall off if the camp gets a little loose. Bad because it makes mounting and dismounting the camera more difficult. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the weight rating....44 lbs seems to be quite an exagerration compared to other ballheads I've used. I'd say it should have been rated at 20 lbs or something like that. Even with the lock knob locked down tight, you can still move it without putting too much force on the camera. My other ballheads are rock solid when locked down. I haven't tried my 300 f/4 yet, but you may be able to get away with using a mid sized DSLR with a 300 f/4 lens. If the lens has a good tripod collar and the setup is well balanced. But I certainly wouldn't try anything more than that with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value Bare in mind that this review is based on first impressions and using this item in the house to check it out. I have not used it in the field yet. First impressions are that this ballhead is very well made. All markings are clear and easy to read. The movements are very smooth & it locks down my 7 lb setup very securely. I like the fact that the ball tension knob is separate from the main locking knob. For me it just makes it easier to use than messing with a tension screw withing the locking knob. Of course this is simply a personal preference. This ball-head is a great value for ones money. Only issue was learning how to properly pronounce SIRUI sue-ray (yes I know it doesn't sound a bit like it is spelled) this is according to a video on the SIRUI official web site.
