Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 Overview

  • 1Description

The 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX Lens for Nikon from Tokina is a wide-angle to standard length zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/4.0. It is compatible with Nikon DX cameras and provides a 35mm focal length equivalency of 18-42mm. This compact lens features a one-touch AF/MF clutch operation to switch back and forth between auto and manual focus, for manual focus slide the focus ring back and for autofocus allow to the ring to rest in the forward position. A newly designed GMR (magnetic precision) AF sensor is mounted close to the AF motor and provides fast, accurate AF. The lens' SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) means that autofocus responds smoothly and silently, which is ideal when shooting HD video.

The use of SD glass (ultra-low dispersion glass), which emulate fluorite glass in performance, aims to eliminate chromatic aberration and aspherical lens elements in both the front and rear lens groups correct distortion and also helps to minimize aberrations for sharp imaging throughout the zoom range.

Wide-angle to standard length zoom provides 35mm focal range equivalency of 18-42mm
An AF/MF clutch mechanism provides one-touch control when switching between auto and manual focus.
A GMR (magnetic precision) sensor offers fast, accurate autofocus and the SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) means that the AF motor is virtually silent, which is important when shooting HD video.
Ultra-low dispersion glass and aspherical lens elements minimize distortion and aberrations for sharply rendered images throughout the zoom range

    Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 Reviews

12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX Lens for Nikon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expectations Met & Surpassed It is my first Tokina digital lens and is not only a great walk-around lens covering the super-wide to near normal perspectives but is amazingly free from edge distortion as well at at its widest(12mm). The lens is totally quiet and balances well on my D7000 and is amazingly free from the usual edge-distortion effects common on wides. I have only used it for a few days but am in love with it. Because of its range and my likes for wide views it will probably be on my camera most of the time. It is nicely damped in manual usage, focuses quickly, is solidly built and everything I was hoping it would be and more in image rendition. Bottom line - a great lens for the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value for money. Firstly - I love this lens. I have 18mm upwards covered and wanted an ultra wide, but one that allowed me to carry day to day and cover landscapes, candid and some family type shots. This is the ultimate lens. I never felt constrained as I think I would have been with the others that only go to 20 or 24mm. This lens is amazingly sharp, colours were punchy, Way better than I expected. The only drawbacks were some some lens flair, but that's to be expected with this wide a lens. Also have to remember on camera flash doesn't work with the wider range. I really enjoyed this lens, price is incredible, and it's my default lens now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Winner I wanted to go W I D E R. B&H used department bought the Tokina 16-50 f2.8 lens I purchased from them in 2007. I was prepared to purchase a Nikon 12-24 f3.5/4.5. I always like to speak with a sales person when placing an order because their input is usually of value, as it was this time. I ended up buying another Tokina, the 12-28 f/4. I did like the 16-50 very much but the zoom locked up a year ago and I had to have it repaired. Not only did I save money but as the rep told me the lens is very sharp. And with some of the money saved I purchased 3 years of total coverage. I used to be in the video production business and have been purchasing equipment from B&H since the 1980's. They have never let me down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED! I was looking for a serious wide angle and couldn't ignore all the rave reviews I kept seeing from people from most of the research I conducted, like I almost always do. I hadn't bought any third party lens, yet people with much more experience and tech savoy were really giving this Tokina great reviews. I haven't been disappointed. All I need for wonderful home interior shots and landscapes! So far, no negatives from me. Going to keep my eyes and mind open to other possible great lenses that don't always say Nikon...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but not great!! Bought this lens on the reputation of the 11-16 f2.8 as I wanted more walk around range. Saw some manufacturers full size samples that looked excellent. On my Nikon D5200 the results were good but not as sharp as I expected. Shooting in RAW and with a tripod certainly helps but for best results need to post process. Lens is quite heavy on the smaller D5200 body but it is well made and feels robust. The 12mm is wide enough for 99% of my expected photos so overall quite happy but not ecstatic (hence the 4 stars). Service by B&H to Australia was excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tokina 12-28 f/4, Awesome! I bought this lens because I needed to be able to go a lot wider. I also wanted to be able to have a decent zoom range without spending so much for the Nkon 12-24 f/4. From the pictures I have gotten out of this lens, it is very nice for it's price, and it is very sharp at 12mm but gets softer at 28mm, but that's not very noticeable if focusing closely on a subject. The build quality is excellent, and I don't regret not getting a Nikon equivalent lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must-have for 3-dimensional composition. If someone likes wide-angle photography, then this is an excellent tool on DX. It balances perfectly on D300 and I very much like the manual focus clutch mechanism. The comparatively huge range from 12 to 28 mm makes it almost unnecessary to swap lenses. The relatively small aperture of f/4 is not a problem for me as I would seek large depth of field anyway. However, f/4 does allow some nice boke effects when taking photos of very close objects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! I recently purchase the Tokina 12-28 F4.0 lens and had a chance to use it on a trip to Death Valley and Arizona. The lens produced images with better color and sharpness compared to my Nikon 18-105 kit lens on my Nikon D90. I made several shots at the same focal lenght and aperature and the ones taken with the Tokina lens were sharper had better color balance and contained more fine detail. I didn't notice any CA problems reported in some reviews and found the amount of distortion to be small. The focus was fast and accurate. I rarely use the manual focus feature on the lens but when I did I found it useable but not as easy to engage as some of the newer Nikon lenses. The 12-28 mm range was very usable. One item about wide angle lenses is that picture composure is critical; if you don't have an item in the frame to give the photo depth it will end up looking like you were just far away when you took the picture. I really liked the solid feel of the lens and it matches up nicely on my camera; not too big or too small I would highly recommend this lens!
