It is plastic, which I knew before I purchased, but for the amount of pressure being applied, you do need to be careful to tighten it just enough to hold and not much more. You may also note that since the tension point is in the middle, when a pole is in one of the holes, it will not form a balanced clamp, and the discs will clamp slightly to the side. If this was metal, that would not happen (similar to an impact light stand clamp the keeps the discs parallel when clamping). Adjusting it can be tricky since all four fo the center plates will independently just squish together so you really need to hold this and the two rods exactly how you want, and then tighten it. I would love to see this in metal. Note that the color is a bit lighter in grey than the schoeps metal grey rods.
