Fishman TriplePlay overview

  • 1Description

The TriplePlay from Fishman is a wireless MIDI guitar controller that can be used to control virtual MIDI instruments for live performance, music composition, MIDI recording and more. The set includes the controller and hexaphonic pickup, wireless USB receiver, mounting brackets and hardware, rechargeable battery pack, and USB charging cable. It also includes the proprietary TriplePlay software, along with a suite of additional music production software.

The TriplePlay is designed to be simple to install on to your guitar, and also simple to remove. Adding less than a 1/2 inch of height, the TriplePlay transmitter is attached to a metal bracket that fits to the strap button of your instrument. The transmitter secures to the bracket by magnet and the hexaphonic pickup secures to a clip that you attach under the strings. Both the pickup and transmitter are designed to be easily removable from the guitar at your discretion.

The TriplePlay's compact, bus-powered USB receiver connects to your computer's USB port, or to an iOS device using the appropriate USB connector kit (not included). Giving you up to 100 feet of wireless range, you can move freely around the stage or studio while controlling all of your favorite virtual instruments with your guitar.

The TriplePlay features a "guitar/synth/mix" switch on the controller unit that, when used in tandem with an audio interface (not included), allows you to mix your guitar's standard output with the output from your virtual instruments. The guitar output and the virtual instrument output each show up on separate tracks within the TriplePlay software which can run standalone, or within your AU or VST supported DAW.

Included rechargeable lithium-ion battery and USB charging cable gives up to 20 hours of battery life

    Fishman TriplePlay reviews

TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Guitar Controller is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool After a few days of use, I must admit that the FTP does everything I need from a MIDI controller. Finally I can use my bass guitar sound library as I was playing a real bass, and as a composer it helps a lot to make a draft of the project I'm in.Easy to install (in this case, on a James Tyler Variax)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wanted this very thing for years. So the build quality of thing isn't the best.. its very plastic. But it makes up for that in pure function and price. Like I said in the headline i have wanted a simple piece of gear that does what this does for years... pretty much since I started listening to electronic music and playing the guitar back in the late 90's. I love playing the guitar and also producing computer music but the two never seemed to really go together like they should... now they do. This thing controls all my vst instruments perfectly. The software that comes with it integrates into my daw(fl studio) seamlessly. There is very much a learning curve on this i wont lie but its no fault of the system. The thing tracks perfectly and has very good control over dynamics and levels. The main problem for me is just how sloppy i am at guitar. This thing shows you visually in real time your slop. I think it will make me better at my now totally infinite instrument.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from truly great in some ways lousy in others First off, I'm not using this for live performance, just for tracking in my studio. If I was using it live my review might be different. It's great for tracking--very low latency. Very accurate conversion of what you play into midi. VERY accurate. It's easy to trigger false notes, but you can futz with the software and improve things. It's wireless. it's easy to mount on your guitar. It can deal with string bends. It's comfortable and expressive because it;s basically your guitar Downside: The software. it comes bundled with starter set versions of NI and IK Sampletank. Both took forever to download--forever. I could never get the sample tank to work and eventually I just dumped it. The TriplePlay software comes in a standalone version and a plugin in version. The plugin can be used as a wrapper for other VST plugins, why I don't know, this is a useless feature for me, but maybe not for you. The Software isn't well designed--they should offer a streamlined version for people who just want to use the thing as a midi controller. I'm annoyed that I spent HOURS downloading and setting up and updated and registering basically junk software from NI and IK. Fishman makes it seem like the thing won't run without this stuff, but it will, just fine. But once you stumble through the software and set it up you don't have to deal with it anymore, you can just drive whatever synths and samples are in your DAW. But despite the three stars I would highly recommend this thing if you want to get your guitar into MIDI. it's really good at that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best tracking yet I used the included hardware to mount to my Les Paul with a Nashville bridge. The bracket that attaches to the bridge is too wide and pushed against the bridge pickup mounting ring. My solution was to file the bracket, problem solved, although not ideal. After reading some online forums and the support documentation I was able to pair the controller to the receiver (the light on the controller is also a button). Updating to the most recent version of the software is fiddly but doable. I did not download any of the software besides the triple play software which you will need to configure and switch patches on the device. I am using Logic so I am already covered. Be sure to get the pickup as close to the bridge as possible and close to the strings as possible. Before mounting, I adjusted the pickup height screws to the lowest and used the second tallest spacer, adjusting the height of the pole pieces until they were just under physically touching the strings as they pass over the bridge, if you hear buzzing from an open plucked string, it's too close. You may have to raise your string height overall so there is no fret buzz on any fretted note, overtones and harmonics will confuse tracking. Also, find some Velcro or foam to slightly mute the strings at either end of the guitar. Once you have the software installed and configured and have the mono or poly mode selected and string sensitivity set up, you will be amazed at how well and how sensitive the guitar reacts even with piano patches. Less ghost notes and false triggers, acceptible latency (almost non existent from a practical standpoint). It is really a joy to play midi instruments like a real instrument with dynamics and everything. Not without a small amount of frustration if you are using DIN midi, but that is really what the optional base station is for. There are other options as well. Also great to not have a heavy and sensitive proprietary cable to plug in, trip over and break.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best MIDI Pickup I put it on my S Series Ibanez, and works really good. Easy setup and good response. No latency.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally After years of dicking around with guitar midi solutions: Axon; Roland; something that actually works really well. Tracking is virtually 100% accurate, and fast. I installed on an early 90's Les Paul studio with no issues. Nearly magical. Highly recommended.
