The Double M/S Set MDMS from Schoeps consists of a pair of CCM 4 VL cardioid microphones and a CCM 8L figure-8 microphone for sound recording using the Double M/S technique. It includes a special shock mount to achieve the Double M/S configuration using the three microphones, and a 12.2 x 6.0”, gray colored basket-type windscreen with windjammer that covers the entire setup and cuts down the noise from wind. The windscreen features a 3/8” thread. Also bundled are the MDMS U Matrix Box and the cables required to set up the Double M/S array.
In addition to the front-facing CCM 4 VL cardioid mid microphone and the CCM 8L figure-8 side microphone, a CCM 4 VL is set up as the rear-facing directional microphone. The front- and rear-facing microphones share the signal of the figure-8 microphone so as to form two complete, back-to-back M/S systems. One M/S system then provides the 3 front channels (the center channel signal being provided directly by the mid microphone of the front system), while the other system provides the 2 surround channels.
The CCM 4 VL is particularly ideal for speech recording, since its slight emphasis around 10 kHz helps to improve intelligibility. The directional response is especially well maintained even at higher frequencies, due to the acoustically transparent housing. The CCM 8L is side-addressed (pickup perpendicular to the microphone body), and its capsule is a true dipole (bidirectional) transducer with a single diaphragm.
The MDMS U Passive Matrix decodes 5 channels from 3 microphone signals. It features high-quality transformers that converts the microphone signals into L / R / C / LS / RS surround signals. A second, switchable mode supplies 4 signals without the center-channel output. The three LEMO plugs of the microphones terminate to a single XLR-7 output via the included adapter cable. This output from the Double M/S array then connects to the MDMS U matrix box via the supplied 16.5’ extension cable.
