Olympus VF-4 overview

  • 1Description

The black VF-4 Electronic Viewfinder for Select Olympus PEN Cameras from Olympus is compatible with most Olympus PEN digital cameras with a firmware upgrade, but is directly compatible with the E-P5. It provides a 2,360k-dot resolution on its LCD screen and it attaches to the camera's hot shoe mount. The VF-4 can be used indoors or outdoors and is particularly beneficial when capturing images in direct sunlight, avoiding the glare often found on a camera's rear LCD monitor. In addition, an eye-level viewfinder allows for more stable shooting because placing the camera to your eye provides a third contact point and steadier control. It offers a quick refresh rate to minimize ghosting on fast-moving subjects.

The viewfinder has a 1.48x magnification factor and built-in diopter adjustment for easy viewing with or without eyeglasses. This viewfinder's Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) technology enables high-speed transfer of high-resolution images and aspherical lenses ensure high resolution from center to edge.

The VF-4 contains an eye-sensor which recognizes when your eye is placed to the viewfinder and automatically turns on the EVF while turning off the rear LCD monitor. Plus, the VF-4 can be tilted up 90º for composing shots at low angles. The brightness and contrast of the display can be adjusted up or down in seven increments via the camera's menu.

The Olympus PEN E-PL5, E-PL3, E-PL2, E-PL1, E-PL1s, E-PM2, E-PM1, E-P3, E-P2, E-M5 and XZ-2 cameras can be made compatible with the VF-4 with a free firmware update, however the eye sensor is not supported on these cameras and with the E-PL2, E-PL1, E-PL1s, E-P2, XZ-2 cameras, slight image degradation on the viewfinder is noted.

    Olympus VF-4 reviews

VF-4 Electronic Viewfinder for Select Olympus PEN Cameras is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding EVF! This EVF absolutely transforms the diminutive EPM2 into something that acts like a much larger camera. The viewing area is HUGE, colors are excellent, and responsiveness is very, very good. I have had the VF-2 and VF-3, as well as the native VFs on the GH2 and GH3, and this just leaves all of them in the dust. Add in the nice locking mechanism that Olympus finally put on, and this now never leaves my camera. It's a real must-have for the PENs. (One thing...You MUST do the firmware update for it to work on any of the bodies other than the newly announced EP5, and the automatic viewfinder/LCD eye switch will not work on anything but the EP5.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for PEN Cameras I actually use the VF-4 on my EM-1. I like to take photos from low angles and I find that having the ability to raise the viewfinder makes it much easier for me to do so. I know the LCD screen on the EM-1 can also be used for this purpose but I find that having a viewfinder works much better. It not only eliminates glare but also helps to isolate the image I want to take from the rest of the subject matter. My eyesight isn't what it use to be which also makes it more difficult for me to use the LCD screen. I wish Olympus would build this feature into their future OMD cameras, it would keep the system much more compact.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not great with E-PL1 Used with Olympus E-PL1 after firmware upgrade the VF-4 produced thin, slightly blue viewfinder images. Colors, contrast, and brightness were not adequate for making any corrections on the fly and never came close to the characteristics of the same image seen on the LCD screen. EV display controls within the Olympus menu were capable of dimming the viewfinder image or making it even more blue -- but never making it accurate. My experience only refers to my E-PL1, not more recent cameras or the E-P5 and E-PL5 the unit was designed for. Fortunately, B&H's excellent return policy fixed my problem with zero stress.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Image Very good image quality on my XZ2 - about the same as the EVF on my Sony NEX7. Slightly better image quality than the VF2 which I also own. VF4 diopter adjustment is much easier because wheel is now on side. Shape of eyecup on VF4 is much better, rectangular instead of round so it blocks out sunlight better. VF4 locks into place securely which also is an improvement over the VF2. (Eye sensor is built in but it does not trigger automatic switching between LCD display and VF4 on my XZ2 and most other older cameras. Currently that feature only works on the EP5 according to the Olympus website. Not a problem, quick and easy to push the button on the VF4 to switch between LCD and VF4)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome!, BUT PLASTIC! I love most everything about the VF-4, fun to use, never realized how much of a difference using a good viewfinder makes. BUT, GIVEN THE PRICE THE PLASTIC BUILD FEELS A BIT CHEAP! Still, I bought this to complete my E-P5 camera which I like, the added bulk does not bother me. For the price they should have put the same metal quality as in the E-P5 it was designed for. I'm in a bit of quandry about recommending this product. It's a Yes & No. I can say, I'm happy to have it now that I have it. But it has changed my system building strategy. They should drop the price of the VF-4 because of the plastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Veiwfinder I recently upgraded from a camera with a built-in viewfinder, to one without, an Olympus E-PL5. This viewfinder, the Olympus VF4, is superior to my previous camera, and I thought that one was pretty good. It displays all the information I need, just like the back of the camera's lcd screen. It's perfect for when I need to have a viewfinder, and stows neatly away in my bag, or pants pocket, for when I don't. The switch/button, under the eyecup, turns the lcd off, viewfinder on. For the E-P5, it auto-detects when you raise the camera to your face, and turns the lcd off. So, when I'm using the VF4, I'm also saving battery strength by not running the lcd.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I bought this for my Olympus Pen e-pm2, which I love for its pocketable size and great picture quality. The Pen e-pm2 works very well as a point and shoot camera for situations such as parties or photographing the grandkids. However, when I need to be sure that I am getting the subject in focus for landscapes and travel photography, I use the VF-4. It doesn't add much bulk to the camera and works extremely well for me. It has a diopter adjustment and the image is sharp, contrasty and bright. It gives me the added confidence to know I nailed the focus and the composition. I am very happy with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best EVF's I've experienced B&H had a sale on these prior to the Christmas Holidays that made me jump. I had to order two of them and wow...am I glad I did. This is the finest EVF (internal or external) that I've owned. The field of view and clarity are superb and what I enjoy (on top of the wonderful IQ) is the fact that it locks into place. It won't fall off like the previous Olympus VF2 (a wonderful EVF in its own rite). But this VF-4 sets the standard and if you own a Pen camera, you owe it to yourself to get one.
