Gepe SK-GH01 overview

  • 1Description

The Gepe SK-GH01 Gimbal Head Mount is an ideal solution for photographers who have had the awkward and unwieldy experience of trying to work with a long, heavy lens on a ball or pan head. Balance is the preeminent mission of the gimbal head. Instead of the fixed point of the lens' tripod collar, the SK-GH01 rotates lenses around their center gravity, offsetting their weight and literally allowing adjustments with one finger. The mount has an 80 cm reference scale marked in millimeters for accurate, repeatable settings.

The sturdy aluminum alloy SK-GH01 mounts to tripod legs with a 3/8"-16 screw and is compatible with Arca-type lens plates many of which are 6.0" long allowing sliding adjustments of 3.0" in both directions. Note: quick release lens plates are purchased separately.

    Gepe SK-GH01 reviews

SK-GH01 Gimbal Head Mount is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mid price alternative I bought a 600mm Canon lens, which triggered a number of other purchases. You cannot use a traditional pistol grip ball head for a lens this size. There are a large range of alternatives for Gimbal heads, ranging from $100 to the $550. Wimberly head. So I tried the middle with this Gepe head. It is very well made, quite heavy, and does the job well. Good instructions help you balance the lens on the Gimbal head allowing a big 600mm lens to move about effortlessly. Keep in mind that you will need a Acra Swiss type mount for the lens (not included). The Acura Swiss mounts also run a multitude of prices, I ordered the one that replaced the foot on my Canon lens. It has a long foot that allows further balancing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not so much Well I bought this one since it seemed to be reviewed ok and I wont be using it that often however I don't think I would recommend after spending a few days out in the field so to speak. The problem is the Allen head bolt at the top of the section that attaches to the Tripod. It keeps coming loose when panning and once it does that the mount becomes wobbly. This is something you do not want when using a Tripod. I found myself carrying the Allen Wrench in my pocket and stopping to tighten the bolt quite a bit. If it is tightened too tight then the head wont swing freely. I think I will try some Thread Glue or something on it. So in my opinion unless you want to fiddle with it maybe this one is not for you.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from BEWARE I got this head for use with a Nikon 500mm f4 P lens. Head is easy to balance and use with this lens. But right out of box the panning base was loose and head would wobbly. Adjustment screw would not move, but now you can not keep it tight. Base seems to grind and bind or it has to much wobble.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well Used this gimbal head on my Manfrotto tripod to photograph balloon launches. It handled my Sigma 70-200mm just fine. The azmuth functions is smooth as glass, however, the altitude function is a bit stiff. Worked well on balloons but may be limited when photographing birds in flight. No real way to adjust this function, may improve with more use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SK-GH01 Gimble Head Mount I use this gimble head with my Nikkor 500mm f4 and 150-500mm f5-6.3 Sigma. It is well balanced and smooth to operate.Easy to install and use. I'm completly satisfied with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Economical alternative I've only just got this, but my Nikkor 500 AIP & D300/600 balance beatifully on it It appears to be very well made and the movements are both smooth and adjustable. Will know more (obviously) when it's properly field tested this winter
