Samyang 16mm f/2.0 Reviews

Very pleased with lens quality and performance

I am very pleased with the quality and performace of this Samyang 16mm lens. The downsides are that the lens is somewhat heavy and long on APS-C cameras.

Fantastic performance

First things first: I knew this lens was manual focus and manual aperture when I got it. I have been quite satisfied with the sharpness and color of the images, even wide-open. I can easily get excellent focus for still subjects using 5x or 10x magnification on Live View. I don't really miss autofocus too much, nor do I think I'd pay extra for a chipped version just to get focus confirm. That having been said, on moving subjects such as a cat, it can be difficult to get focused in time to get the shot. This is especially true because as a rather wide lens, it has to be placed close to the subject to get good framing. Turns out my cat just wants to turn away or walk away when I shove a big piece of glass in her face..... I also don't mind the manual aperture ring, in fact it's rather fun. However, I am very particular about knowing what settings were used for every shot so I can learn what worked and what didn't. Unfortunately, this means I live with the hassle of writing down what aperture I used every time. I know Samyang has some lenses with a chip and those all seem to control aperture electronically. I don't need to control aperture from the camera, but it would be nice to have the aperture automatically recorded in the EXIF. If Samyang even just had a version which still used a manual aperture ring but had an encoder to record the setting, I'd buy it. I got this lens primarily for the f/2.0 for astro, but I haven't had a chance to test that fully yet. However I really like that even though the imaging circle is APS-C sized, the rear of this lens does not protrude (unlike Canon EF-S glass). Thus it's possible to use, for instance, an in-body light-pollution-reduction filter using the "EOS APS clip" form factor.

question

I've read people saying this has focus assist with the Nikon bodies. I am thinking of buying this for the D3200. How will I be using it ? Focus assist ? Auto Exposure ? Will the TTL metering be functional ?
Asked by: Anonymous
In my experience with the Nikon version of this lens, focus assist will work with Nikon DSLRs, but the results may not be accurate depending on the particular model of camera. When I use the lens with my Nikon D300 the lens will focus in back of the subject even when the focus assist green dot in the viewfinder indicates that you are in focus. This issue is serious enough to result in out of focus photos when the lens is used at maximum aperture or close to maximum aperture, particularly in close-up photos. My D7000 body also back focuses when you use focus assist with this lens, although not as noticeably as with the D300. The only one of my camera bodies on which focus assist works with reasonable accuracy with this lens is my D7100. I don't know why this variation occurs, or how well focus assist will work with this lens on other Nikon camera bodies. If I need really accurate focus with this lens when using the D300 or D7000 I focus with the camera in Live View with the LCD view zoomed to 100%. The Nikon version of this lens is chipped to provide auto exposures, and it has five contacts to communicate exposure info with the camera body. So most of the auto exposure modes on Nikon DSLRs will work normally, with the possible exception of 3D Matrix Metering (since the lens is manual focus, I don't believe that it sends any focus distance information to the camera body). Regular Matrix Metering does work, -this is the exposure mode I normally use and I have not had any exposure issues with this lens when used in that mode. The lens has a manual aperture ring with a Nikon AI aperture coupling tab. So, when used on Nikon cameras with an AI tab, this lens is technically AI-P . You do have to set the lens to its minimum aperture for auto exposure to work, and the aperture ring does not have a minimum aperture lock. But the ring does click very securely to minimum aperture so it's unlikely that you might accidentally knock it off the minimum aperture of f/22.

question

Please confirm that this lens is chipped for auto exposure with Nikon cameras. The photos show that it has the electrical contacts on the lens mount, and the aperture ring has a Nikon type AI coupling ridge, but there isn't any mention of this in the lens description.

That lens does not have electronic connections. You can use the camera in Aperture priority or manual.

is the focal throw is good for video or better to buy the cine version ?
Asked by: adelqafar
The throw of the Samyang 16mm f/2.0 is roughly 120~135 degrees based on my estimation after playing with it in the store. The Cine version is likely only different in that it has follow-focus gears. If you are interested in getting gears for this lens separately and using the lens for both photo and video, that would make this lens a very versatile choice. The diameter of the focus ring is 73.9mm.

Is it possible to use it with a Canon T3i with a clipin Halpha filter, such as an Astronomik filter?
Asked by: Alexis K.
We do not carry the Astronomik line of filters so we cannot speak to the efficacy of such a combination. Please contact Astronomik. We can offer the opinion that this lens will behave the same as a Canon lens as far as mounting is concerned.

question

Will this lens work on a Canon 60D? Unsure of what the M Mount is.
Asked by: Anonymous
No. This lens will not work, as it is specified for Canon's mirrorless system. This would be better for the EF mount 60D:Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF MountB&H # SA1428C Mfr # SY14M-C
