On line system worked well

Did not work for my application

I purchased this product with a matching receiver to connect a laptop to a projector. I ran shielded cat 6 cable (150ft) from the laptop to the projector. When trying to connect the laptop, I could see the projector name in my options dropdown but when I selected the projector, nothing happened. I understand they are directional. HDMI OUT was going to the projector and HDMI IN was coming from my laptop. The projector could not find a signal. All lights on units indicated a connection. I tried powering things off and on and tried a bluray player thinking perhaps it was my laptop. The projector never detected a signal. I thought perhaps it was an issue with HDCP but the manual says these support HDCP. Maybe these don't work over Cat 6? In the end I tried a similar unit by a different manufacture (of lesser quality in my opinion). Same cabling, same laptop, same projector, and that unit did the trick. Before writing this review I tried the units one last time to be fair. I used a cat 5 cable about 20ft long and connected it to an HDTV. It appears they will work with this combination. So they get 2 stars instead of 1. This is my 4th time having to use HDMI over cat 5/6 cable. All applications have been with different manufacturers and all have developed issues. 3 previous will experience drop outs in signal, this unit didn't work for the application required.

Is the receiver required? I'm running directly to a projector that accepts HDbaseT as an input.
Asked by: Seth
In theory, the Kramer TP-580T HDBaseT Twisted Pair Transmitter should produce the signal and not need the receiver.

How important is shielded cable? I'm wondering about our existing unshielded 250ft cat6 run.
Asked by: Zachary
Shelled cables are recommended as they will help protect against any potential power surges when connected to the Kramer TP-580TXR Extended Range HDBaseT Twisted Pair Transmitter, but they are not required.

Does this unit always require a power cable? Or could it be powered with a PoE/PoH receiver?
Asked by: Zachary
The Kramer TP-580TXR Extended Range HDBaseT Twisted Pair Transmitter does not support POE powering and would require the use of its included power supply.

question

Can I use this device as HDMI extender over cat6 to get picture from cable box and ir extender to control a cable box?
Asked by: Anonymous
That should be possible. This HDBaseT Transmitter and Receiver set is HDCP complaint, which is necessary for it to work with a cable box. It also can extend IR over the Cat6 cable.

question

is the extender IP based? is it able to be fed through a switch in its own VLAN? or does it have to be a direct connection on both ends?
Asked by: Shahed E.
It is not IP traffic, it is HDbaseT over ethernet cable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDBaseT
