Tascam DA-3000 overview

  • 1Description

The DA-3000 Stereo Master Recorder and ADDA Converter from Tascam is a 2-track analog to digital/digital to analog converter that can be used as a digital recorder, converter, or monitoring system for mastering, mixing, and tracking applications. It records to SDHC or CF cards and has a USB port that allows you to transfer files to and from an external flash drive. The DA-3000 can record analog or digital signals as stereo PCM files in up to 192kHz and stereo DSD files in up to 5.6MHz.

The DA-3000 was built with dual-mono circuitry to reduce interference between channels to allow for more accurate audio capture. Both the left and right channels conversion is via their BurrBrown PCM1795 converter chip. The unit has a fanless design to reduce internal noise. Visual monitoring of your signals is provided via the front-panel 24-dot level meter.

The recorder provides a variety of input and output in both the analog and digital domain. Stereo XLR and RCA inputs and outputs allow you to connect to most analog sources, while S/PDIF, AES/EBU and SDIF-3 digital connections allow you to integrate a variety of digital sources. You can control the DA-3000 with the included remote control.

Stereo Recording at up to 192 kHz PCM and 5.6 MHz DSD
The DA-3000 is designed for stereo PCM/DSD recordings at high sampling frequencies suitable for archival masters. This unit is capable of recording analog and digital signals up to 192kHz PCM or 5.6MHz DSD. The unit records to both SDHC cards and UDMA supported CF cards
The variety of inputs and outputs enable connection with all types of studio equipment, including audio interfaces and mic preamps. The analog inputs and outputs include both XLR and RCA jacks. The digital connections include S/PDIF RCA coaxial and XLR jacks to support AES/EBU. The BNC SDIF-3 inputs and outputs support DSD digital connections.
Detailed User Interface
With the goal of making a high-quality audio recorder and ADDA converter easy to use, Tascam designed the front panel with all of the necessary external controls and included long, brightly lit meters and display. The 128x64 OEL display allows you to check necessary information quickly, and the 24-dot level meters allows you to monitor levels at all times
Simultaneous Multitrack Recording and Playback with Multiple Cascaded Units
You can synchronize the operation of multiple DA-3000 units by interconnecting their digital inputs and outputs. Files that have been recorded in sync will have sample-level synchronization as well. In addition to stereo DSD recording of Jazz and classical music, this also makes simple DSD multitrack recording of bands possible
Dual Mono Circuits
Use of a dual mono structure for the output circuit eliminates interference between the left and right channels and achieves high audio quality by maximizing the performance of the components. Two mono circuits are built into the unit. The left/right channels each use one BurrBrown PCM1795 D/A converter chip.
Low Noise with Fully-Balanced Circuitry and AD Converters
The internal circuit uses a fully-balanced structure that is resistant to noise from the inputs and outputs. This has a great effect on the output and input stage impacting the recorded audio. The input audio is digitalized by the BurrBrown PCM4202 ADC after it passes through the analog input circuit
Op Amps
Operational amplifiers have a great impact on audio quality, so Tascam carefully selected the NJM2114 and NE5532. In addition, Tascam selected low-impedance capacitors featuring low resistance, low noise and high precision to emphasize audio quality
Power Supply Section and TCXO Support High-Audio Quality
In order to assure high-quality audio input and output, a stable power supply is indispensable. The EI core transformer incorporated into this unit has separate coils - one for the digital circuits and control panels and one for the analog circuits - making it possible to capture even higher-quality signals by suppressing noise. In addition, for the clock generator, Tascam used a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) that boasts 1-ppm precision
Fanless Design Eliminates Unwanted Noise
Cooling fans inside equipment generate noise and can cause loss of accuracy when monitoring at low volume levels. With the DA-3000, Tascam has achieved performance in a fanless design, allowing you to maintain a comfortable monitoring environment that is free of fan noise

    Tascam DA-3000 reviews

DA-3000 Stereo Master Recorder and ADDA Converter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely piece of gear I'm using this primarily to encode vinyl into high resolution digital files. I capture in DSD at 5.6 MHz then convert to 24 bit 96 kHz files for further cleanup and playback.I also like that I can attach a USB keyboard and have an easy way to create artist / album folders to keep things organized while working. The major downside is that it is very particular about what Compact Flash and SD cards will work, review the documentation and make sure you are using a card that is tested.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning. I use the DA-3000 in ADDA direct mode to send digital audio from my DAW through my analog chain and back. The conversion is phenomenal. I finally hear in recordings precisely what I hear from my monitors while mixing. Being able to record the analog inputs directly to a constantly-recording solid state back-up is peace of mind. Never before has a device of this nature excited me. Highly, highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sounding deck, value for money A decent DA converter will cost you half a grand and up, the sky is the limit for audiophiles. There are not a lot of choices for AD converter, throw in the functions of a recorder, and you can see why this is value for money. All the above don't count if it doesn't sound right, but to my ears it is the best kept secret out there. It faithfully converts the analogue signal coming off a Clearaudio Ovation turntable with an Air Tight PC-1 cartridge, I am not going to mention the rest of the gears, but suffice to say I'm picky and my ears are still good. If you want detailed analogue like sound, you should give it a try. You can only record to CF and SD cards, but given the current capacity of these cards, you shouldn't have any issues, except to check for compatible cards posted on the website. PCM is limited to 192 KHz so keep this in mind if you are after the greatest and latest. I wish it has coaxial in as I do have source components with optical out only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Correction: Wish it had OPTICAL IN Since I can't find a way to edit my review, I have to add this second review, may be I shouldn't be typing way passed midnight after a few drinks. The DA-3000 has coaxial in (and out), what it is missing is optical toslink in/out. There are format converters out there with optical in and coaxial out, I just tried a cheap one and the DA-3000 can't lock the signal. So keep this in mind if you have source with optical out only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile recorder, good for audiophiles My primary purpose for the DA-3000 is to make archival conversions of some of my unique LPs. Even if some of these might be available as CD versions, the sound quality I can achieve with the DA-3000 is higher. While targeted at studio or broadcast applications, the DA-3000 will provide audiophiles with the same quality and much more functionality than the same money spent in the audiophile market. Aside from the recording function, you get A-D and D-A sections that can be used independently or ganged together. You get a full range of PCM sampling options as well as two DSD frequencies. The through sound from original LP to digital playback is great. At 96k/24, I cannot tell the difference played through my speakers. During the recording process, I did notice a small difference listening with high quality headphones between the headphone jack of my Nagra phono preamp vs. the DA-3000's headphone jack. I have just one minor criticism based on my usage so far. In between tracks on the LP, I pause the recording so that each LP track will wind up as its own recorded track - in doing so, there is a slight delay before the DA-3000 recording can be restarted. It has never caused me to miss the start of the next LP track, but is still slightly disconcerting. It would be nice (though not in the specs nor in its target market) for the DA-3000 to provide some support for MP3 playback (for example, from the USB flash memory interface). Alas, it is strictly an uncompressed audio device - as befits its quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Audiophile recorder of vinyl Pros: Easy to set up and use with the exception noted below. I use the unbalanced connection from my modified Jasmine LP 2.0 SE, and unbalanced to my Jungson JA88D integrated amplifier. From there, it is just like operating a tape deck for recording and playback. The sound recording is indistinguishable from my vinyl deck (Lenco with Mirko bearing and platter, and PTP5 stainless steel top plate). It is paired with a VPI JMW12.5 with Nordost wires and Denon DLS1 LOMC. I am novice with using digital devices. With careful reading and following the instructions, my wife and I got it up and running fairly quickly. The downside was that noted below. This is a great audiophile value. Cons: Reference the rear panel connections on page 13 for making connections. The drawing on page 17 has the input and output connections backwards. We called Tascam technical support. The staff was a bit impatient and could not help us figure out the problem. We persisted with retracing all of our steps. Realizing we did everything correctly, we searched the manual and found the alternate rear panel diagram and reversed the connections.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dream machine! Use in home studio. Never thought this level of recording quality could be obtained at this low of a price. Glad I'm around to enjoy it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super high-quality This digital recorder is very versatile. I use it as a final mixdown machine for my 2 bus. I usually record to .wav files in 96/24, but it can also do 2.8 and 5.6 MHzDSD as well as the standard 44.1/16 for CD printing. These units are great for daisy chaining and recording live as well. The multi-channel DSD is the ultimate in high fidelity, in my opinion.
