Bolt VB-11 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a bare-bulb design and an output of 180Ws, the Bolt VB-11 Bare-Bulb Flash is a specialized shoe-mount flash unit that offers users a quality of light similar to studio strobes in a compact, portable package. The bare bulb design provides a full 360° specular light and is able to work with a variety of optional light modifiers, such as an umbrella mount, colored filters, and grids for creating distinct lighting effects.

The unit features a powerful guide number of 196' at ISO 100 and covers about 28mm when used with the included reflector. The flash can also be used as an optical slave at a range of up to 33'. This mode has two settings to control whether to trigger the flash immediately when the master is fired or to ignore a single preflash.

The VB-11 flash also features a stroboscopic, or repeat, mode that allows the unit to fire multiple flashes in a row, meaning users can capture multiple images of a subject in a single exposure. The locking head can rotate 135° right and 180° left as well as tilt from -15 to 90° for added control and versatility. Additionally, the unit is fully manual and offers power settings from 1/1 to 1/128. The flash does require power from an optional external power pack which will provide a recycle time of approximately 0.05 to 2.6 seconds. It comes with a retaining ring, diffuser, reflector, power cable, protective pouch, and a stand/tripod mount.

    Bolt VB-11 reviews

    VB-11 Bare-Bulb Flash is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love This Flash!! I have used this flash for shooting events that require me to be mobile. I've photographed christmas events for family, and military that lasted over 3 hours, and didn't have any problems. I recently used it at an outdoor location model shoot, and loved the results. I mounted it on my Stratus flash bracket, and it wasn't too heavy. I like the versatility of being able to use on my flash bracket, or mount it on a light stand with several dedicated light modifiers. I was previously using a Canon 580EX with a Quantum Turbo3; which is nice, yet it doesn't have the power of this light. I'm really glad I made this purchase, and would recommend it to anyone who isn't worried about TTL. In my opinion, the power, and price are well worth it, and outweigh the high end speed lights that cost more minus a power pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will Do The Job. Have not used this product but from the information I received from your staff I'm sure it's going to do the job. In late summer I'll start photographing the local college Fall sport teams and I'm sure it will give me the extra lighting I need for groups of 20-30 players. I'll still use my SB-700 for the headshots but utilize Bolt bare bulb for the groups.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nothing fancy -- just light I do a fair bit of sports team shoots and other location work, often in mid-day sun or in gyms, natatoriums, etc. Bought a couple of the VB-11 kits (flash, battery pack, and accessories) to help me take better control of the lighting in these situations, with the following results: Pros: (1) The flash unit seems well built; fit and finish are good. (2) Power is good. The specs say the VB-11 is significantly more powerful than a 580-EXII zoomed to 28mm coverage, and informal comparisons bear this out. (3) The ControlSync 16 transmitter and receiver included in the kit work very well. The ability to quickly and easily vary flash output from a distance is very handy. (4) The PP-400DR power pack is excellent. I recently did several hundred mostly full power shots with recycle time that I guesstimate at 0.5-1.0 seconds and still had half or more of the power pack capacity remaining. Cons: (1) The radio control receiver attaches to the flash unit via a folding USB connector. This is convenient and means you don't need batteries for the receiver, but the connection is exposed in a way that I think makes it quite vulnerable to damage from ordinary handling. (2) The tripod/stand mounting shoe included with the flash works but again seems quite exposed to damage from ordinary use/handling. As I would expect that most people will use the unit primarily on a light stand I find the integrated mounting foot found on the big brother VB-22 flash to be the better method. (3) I find the accessories in general to be of lesser apparent quality than the flash unit itself. Both examples of the 12 beauty dish that I received were bent out of square. This was easily corrected with a rubber mallet, but still. The included umbrella mounting kit fits nicely and centers the flash head in the umbrella, but I won't use it because my engineer's eye tells me that it will put intolerable stress on the connection between the flash head and body. Conclusion: If you need location lighting and are prepared to work manually, the VB-11 is an excellent choice at a very attractive price point, at least in the B&H supplied kit. I rate the flash itself and the power pack at five stars but drop the system to a four star rating because of the concerns noted above.
