Epson V550 overview

  • 1Description

The Perfection V550 Photo Film and Document Scanner from Epson features a 6400 dpi sensor that scans not just documents and photos but also 35mm negatives, slides, and medium format film. Digitize your negatives and slides to view, edit, and share them. The 48-bit color depth and 3.4 Dmax provide accurate color rendition. The included film holders ensure you get accurate scans the first time and eliminate the guesswork of film scanning by automatically separating multiple frames into separate files. After scanning an image upload your photo directly to Facebook, Picasa, or a cloud site using the bundled Epson Easy Photo Scan software.

When scanning a document, you can convert the image into editable text using the included OCR (optical character recognition) software. You can also use the software to create a PDF file for easy document archiving and sharing. Have a specific type of scan you perform often? You can program the scanner's 4 one-touch buttons to automate specific scans for a smoother workflow.

    Epson V550 reviews

Perfection V550 Photo Film and Document Scanner is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 478.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Photos, marginal for negatives This unit performs very well for photos and documents, and the software is fairly easy to learn. In some cases, it does a good job with negatives, but there are two limitations: (1) Negatives can only be scanned in a small section in the middle of the scanner. You cannot cover the entire scanner with negatives. (2) The software automatically separates the negatives, but often separates them in the wrong place, particularly near the end of a negative strip and whenever anything other than standard 35 mm negatives are scanned. There is no way to disable the automatic separation. 5 Stars for photos and documents, 2 stars for negatives.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Epson v550 So far I have only done slides with the scanner and so far so good. Quality of scan is excellent. Can only do 4 slides at a time at about 3 minutes per set at 600 dpi. I have 1800 slides to do. about 90 hours. Good thing I am retired and have time. On the negative side, you can not lift the slides out of the tray without finger nails or sticky tape on the end of a pencil to get them out. Pour design. Using something sharp could scratch the screen. But for the price it does a good job of scanning. It has all kinds of settings, all the way up to 2400 dpi but that takes forever. I don't play well with computers and found it fairly easy to use. Did have some help from a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epson V550 scanner I've had the Epson V550 scanner for two months. It is great. It does FANTASTIC in handling slides with high lighting contrast, much better than two other scanners I've had. Clarity and colors are excellent, and it is user friendly. And here's what's REALLY great; Epson's product support. I've used Epson's product support 3 times and gotten prompt help with a minimum of fuss. It seems like other companies ask many, many questions before they even start asking about your problem. This is the second product review I've ever written, and the first positive one - that says something pretty outstanding about the V550 and Epson. Bruce Christopherson Seattle, WA

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Photo & Slide Scanner I purchased the V550 to replace my old v2400 Perfection. I have used the scanner for about 1 month and have the following comments: PRO's - excellent job scanning slides, negatives and photos; faster than my old V2400. CON's - files are very large; Photo Ice only works with negatives or slides; scanning 3x5 photos with 48 bit color, 4800 bpi and color enhancement results in file sizes of ~100 MB or more; scanning slides with 48 bit color, 4800 bpi, digital ice and color enhancement results in file sizes ~150 MB. Scan times can be 10-12 minutes per slide. Would be nice to have quicker scans. Unit is still much better than my V2400 and works for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Longtime Epson Fan Never mind that some Epson products are made in Oregon. I would still be a big fan even if they were not. This scanner replaces an Epson Perfection 2400 that will be used and loved by one of our children. The only "Nit" that I have to pick is that it is not set up to scan 4x5 in. images (as if anyone still has any of those laying around). It would just be nice to have on the off-chance one turns up. As well, there is no provision for some antique 3x5 in. negatives I found in the family archives. It would be nice to have a custom guide for odd-sized film for us that are preserving family history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, easy, accurate The scanner works as advertised, but most scanners do. Overall, it is fast and the colors are accurate. What impressed me was the software, which can make or break any product. The software is easy to use and intuitive. The OCR that is bundled with it is amazing. It can reproduce printed pages, including the embedded images, and place the editable object into Word or a PDF. The conversion is very accurate and will format the final document to look like the scanned document. Finally, if you have Adobe Photoshop 4.0, this scanner interfaces seamlessly with the Adobe software.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Epson v550 Great scanner ! Works great on pictures and negatives. Better quality than I would have thought. Easy to use also once you get the hang of everything. My major complaint is the instructions that come with this unit. They are vague and hard to follow, almost like who ever wrote them up is trying to confuse you rather than try to instruct you. I learned more from watching a 15 minute youtube video on how to use this unit, than I did in 2 hours of trying to read the manual. This is one area that could use some improvement for this machine. Other than that I am pleased with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good scanner with clunky software I am scanning mostly documents. I replaced a V100 with the V550. The 550 seems to use the same clunky software that came with the V100. While the scanner is fast (much faster than the 100), the software does it's best to slow you down. New in the software is a requirement to wait after scanning for a conversion to pdf format. You still need to open a separate window to assign a location to store the created file. The software opens the containing folder after the scan making you search for the file. Why not just open the file?. Worst, it assigns 3 digits to the file name; in my use I need to manualy remove them using the rename function. Great scanner, unwieldy software = 3 stars.
