Ideal solution for miking flute

I’ve been wanting a way to attach a condenser microphone to my flute for years, and this little device fits the bill perfectly. Perfect for nominally acoustic settings where the sax and clarinet are present enough without amplification, but the flute requires just a bit to be heard above the rhythm section, if you already own a small condenser mike as I did, this is ideal. Key noise galore, and how to prevent it.

As a professional flutist for decades, I feel I can safely tell you how this product doesn't work, why, and how to actually use it successfully. First things first. The picture on the website does not match the item received, which incidentally does not allow returns. The picture shows a more robust holder for the microphone plastic clip, whereas the actual product has a little round bar protruding from the ring, to which a wire clip is inserted on the tip. You may find pictures of this version on the web. If you use the product as intended you will have too much noise from the instrument's keys, which unfortunately renders the product unusable. There is no suspension for the microphone, and granted, it is rather hard to build it with such a small profile. That being said, I took an ear plug (Quiet Please brand purchased at local drugstore) and sliced it in order to fit the wire from the microphone, sliding the microphone as far as possible from the mouthpiece into the clip, and by doing this the effect is that of a regular microphone, allowing even for effects such as tapping the keys with so little noise carrying over to the signal, you may not even hear it at all. It is not easy to set up, but it will be worthy in that the sound quality can be used for live recording. The system has a rubber ring that protects the instrument from scratches, the clip version received also has a tiny rubber ring at the end of the bar which also protects the instrument from scratches.
