Canon 600EX-RT overview

  • 1Description

The Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Essential Two Flash Wireless Kit from B&H combines two high-performance Speedlite 600EX-RT flash units with the Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter for refined portraiture and other off-camera flash applications. Utilizing radio-controlled, two-way wireless transmission, the transmitter will communicate with the two Speedlites for customizable control of your lighting set-ups.

The Speedlite 600EX-RT features a wireless multiple flash system using radio wave communication that provides precise control over as many as five groups or fifteen individual flashes at a distance of up to 98.4'. Communicating on 2.4 GHz frequency, it will not be interrupted by physical barriers. It is also very powerful, with a guide number of 197' (60 m) at ISO 100 and a zoom flash head that covers a 20-200mm range. It provides full swivel movement of 180° in both directions. Compatible with the AF frame of all EOS cameras, the Speedlite 600EX-RT even works perfectly with the 61-Point High Density Reticular AF found in the EOS-1D X and the EOS 5D Mark III. It supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II.

A dot matrix LCD panel and backlit button provide easy visibility and flash functions can be controlled via the camera's menu. A metal hot-shoe and a dust and water-resistant body allow it to be used in adverse conditions, and the included color filter holder and two orange color filters multiply your creative options.

The ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter mounts to your camera's hot shoe and controls up to 15 flash units or 5 flash groups. It can communicate with its flash units up to a distance of 98.4' and from anywhere within a 360º angle. It supports E-TTL II flash, manual flash, stroboscopic and auto external flash metering and offers 8 custom functions and 3 personal functions.

  • 2 x Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT

Complete with built-in radio transmission wireless functionality, the Speedlite 600EX-RT sits at the top of Canon's on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II compatible flash lineup with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. This two-way 2.4 GHz radio system provides added reliability and a range up to 98.4' among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual Speedlites. This system also does not need direct line-of-site like traditional optical-based transmission and will work through obstacles.

For added coverage and functionality, the flash's zoom head can reach from 20-200mm, with the option for wide 14mm coverage when the built-in diffusion panel is used. Also, the unit can tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate 180° either left or right for complete bounce capabilities. On the back of the 600EX-RT is a backlit dot-matrix LCD panel that displays the status and allows users to easily access and change settings. Additionally, the flash is durable with a redesigned contact construction and improved dust and water resistant sealing.

Other capabilities of the 600EX-RT include a stroboscopic mode as well as high-speed, first and second curtain sync settings for more control over your image's final look. The flash is powered by 4 AA batteries which provide a recycle time of 0.1-5.5 seconds, though it does have a port for an optional external power pack. It comes with a color filter holder with case, a light orange filter, a dark orange filter, a mini stand, and a Speedlite case.

Canon 600EX-RT reviews

Speedlite 600EX-RT Essential Two Flash Wireless Kit is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Added this kit to my one 600EX-RT So now I have 3 600EX-RT's! It took me no time to configure the ST-E3-RT transmitter and link them to the 3 flashes. I put the transmitter on my 6D and took a couple of shots. Child's play with amazing results. Love it and plan to get a second transmitter for my 70D so I can shoot both at the same time during my shoots. Yes the transmitter lacks a number of features as described in some of the other reviews but overall the integration and automation is amazing making it an overall very powerful solution. The attached picture was my second shot making a few minor corrections after the first. Very easy and very fast. I recommend the Canon 600EX-RT flash and kit 100%!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving this equipment I am not a professional photographer, but I love taking pictures of my son whether he is playing outside or I am taking some cute indoor portraits. The indoor lighting just wasn't cutting it, and I decided on this package after many weeks of researching external flashes. I just had to watch a YouTube video on how to link the transmitter to the slave units, and I was ready to go. It was so easy! The umbrellas seem sturdy enough to do the job intended, and I have been playing around with positioning the umbrellas to see how they effect the images. I have yet to test the flashes outdoors, but it is on my to do list. Great product, and I hope it lasts :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from flash photography made easy The ST-E3-RT / 600EX-RT combo really gives you control of flash photography. I mount the ST-E3-RT in the hot shoe of my 5Drs, and place the 600EX-RTs on umbrella stands. I've labeled each of the 600EX-RTs with the group IDs (A,B,C,D) to make things easy for me when choosing to reduce output on one or more flashes by x f-stops. I put a 430EX-RT III on the flash bracket mounted on the 5Dsr (the 430 is smaller and lighter). Full control and No cables. Not even on the flash bracket mounted 430! I wish the display was rear facing instead of on the top. It makes it a bit awkward to see and adjust settings, especially when the flash bracket is in place over the camera body. All in all, it's still a great setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really works I tested the units in auto mode and it was effortless. Of course flash photography is complex and much is needed to create something good looking, but for casual flash photography with two flashes the result was a lot better than I hoped for. The manual controls were typical with all adjustments. I found out that the zoom feature of the flash, e.g. to make the beam narrow, gave new possibilities. Short range using 100 - 200mm could illuminate a face or a book the motive was holding. In short, well built, reliable and works well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Got It Right, Awesome This is an awesome product by Canon. The idea of shooting off camera flash and getting studio quality photos makes it all worth the investment. If you are a serious photographer and you liked working with the 580ex II, then you are going to love this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from B&H is reading my mind! If you are Canon user, have a recent DSLR like a 5D Mark III or 6D, and don't already have one of these components, then this is the sweetest deal yet! It is a big chuck of money at once, but I can tell you I was headed down this road already. You can do a lot with these three products. Unless you are Syl Arena or Joe McNally this may be all you need in the flash department.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great deal if you're starting RT. If you are looking to get into RT, this is one of the best ways to do it. You'll likely need more than one flash and the transmitter anyway, making this buy both convenient and a great deal. I recently purchased this and with the Google Wallet bonus, each speedlite came out to under $$. I think this is the price that Canon sells as refurbished when they offer 20% off a couple times a year. And that's if you can find it during those rare moments it's in stock. Also, I purchased my first 600 for $$ and thought that was nice!I don't know much about flash and have a lot to learn but a little testing proved this is easy to setup and get going. There are many great reviews about both the flash and the transmitter. I just wanted to emphasis the great deal B&H has by offering this as a kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent kit and flexibility With one speedlite, you could achieve a lot. With two, I have lot of flexibility and room to experiment. These flashes and controller are fantastic, step change improvement from 580's and manual triggers, here I have the flexibility to combine Ettl with Manual.
